Arcade Fire.. Its not bad, I should like it, just cant get into it, have tried
Radio Head. Its not all bad but more often than not end up asking Quacker to make Elmer Fud stop whining out of the speakers
ohnoyoudi'nt. Now I've gotta find another place to stay next month, 'cause there's no way I can sleep under the same roof as somebody who doesn't share my love for 2 of my Top 10 all-time favorites.
OK, I put bands in 5 categories on the Love-Hate Scale; does anybody else do this - or something similar? Isn't this sorta how most people rank the acts they like/don't like?
A. LOVE 'EM
[/color]...will pay any amount to see 'em live; have every album & know every word. Total fan girl.
Examples: Radiohead, U2, The National, Arcade Fire, Muse, Peter Gabriel, Elbow, Damien Rice, Glen Hansard, Mumford & Sons, The Cure, Depeche Mode, TOOL/APC, etc.
[/li][li]B. LIKE 'EM...have most of their albums; might go see 'em if it's convenient/not too far; own several albums; not 100% die-hard fan but damn close.
Examples: Avett Brothers, Tori Amos, Grace Potter, MMJ, Decemberists, DMB, Pearl Jam, Sufjan Stevens, Phoenix, Prince, etc.
[/li][li]C. OK...take it or leave it; might go if the ticket's cheap; probably don't own more than 2 full albums & only know the words to half their songs; appreciate the musicianship but wouldn't camp out for front-row tickets.
Examples: Wilco, Black Keys, FLips, Drive-By Truckers, Panic, Neko Case, Beck, Spoon, etc.
[/li][li]D. MEH...not a fan; don't hate 'em but the love just isn't there; couldn't care less if I miss their show but might check 'em out if they're at a festival & I somebody drags me and/or I'm medicated - but still, probably not. Yeah, I know - some of y'all are gonna Monday the hell outta me for these, but so be it:
Examples: Phish, Furthur, Phil Lesh/Dead, Les Claypool, Primus, Ween, Gogol Bordello, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, etc.
[/li][li]E. UGH...you couldn't pay me to go; don't own any of their music (or maybe a few songs); would rather have a root canal than listen to them.
Examples: most IQ-numbing pop; most rap; most very hardcore/metal; most country [/li][/ul]
Yeah, it's possible to like one singer/group but with one group more than the others. (e.g.: I like Gov't Mule/Warren Haynes but not the Allman Brothers or The Dead. I love prog rock, but I don't consider myself a Rush fan. I don't care for Geddy Lee's voice but adore Neil Peart's drumming. It's all personal taste/preference.)
I think our tastes change with time, our friends, even seeing live shows. For me, Arcade Fire was a C category band until I saw them: one show is all it took. There's no explaining tastes or preferences - sometimes the chemistry's just there between you & a band...
Accessible? Not really sure, but my favorites have always been "The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra, Volume 1", "Lanquidity", "The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra", and "Space Is The Place" is one of his most popular, if not the most. Maybe for accessibility, I'd say "Sound Sun Pleasure!!!", as it is more of a standard jazz album.
Can't guarantee you'll like it, but I don't see why you wouldn't if you're into this kind of stuff.
Oh, and seeing Flips mentioned... I really like a handful of their albums, but I absolutely detest the shows. Seems opposite for many who've mentioned them, here.
I am not really captured by the Black Keys the way a lot of you are. Sure, I applaud their talent and I like a few of their songs. I just don't get really excited about the prospect of seeing them.
Likewise, most rap leaves me wondering why the hell I wasted those few minutes of my life that I listened to it. At my kids' and some friends' urging, though, I continue to try.
I really am afraid to learn to like country. I don't want to activate the South Georgia redneck genes that I'm sure are latent within me. Besides, its boring. I do like the classic country, though, like Loretta, George, Waylon, Patsy, Merle et al.
another "shouldn't but do" is opera. I'm really learning to like the genre although I don't know enough about it still.

Some of the older stuff isn't too bad. I like myself some Johnny Cash from time to time.
But much of the newer stuff is indeed garbage. And I might be afraid to learn to like it as well, not wanting to activate the East Connecticut redneck genes that are rampant.
Hey Johnny Cash was once considered "rock and roll"....the Man in Black.....so at least around here it is considered heresey to not like Johnny and Elvis. The Elvis Christmas Album to this day will always be Christmas for me because it is what I have heard my whole life!
As for "should but don't"
Arcade Fire (I'm still trying tho...) Goverment Mule (like Warren's other stuff tho!) Phish (I know I will catch MAJOR crap on this and probably get negative karmas but what can I say? I really LIKE Trey...but I like his stuff seperate from Phish )
Shouldn't but DO: Audioslave (yeah yeah yeah....sell out...megagroup that never got it together...but especially the FIRST record....how you can overlook CC's voice over the heavy riffs and funk of RATM....I just can't comprehend...) And Gillian Welch and Allison Kraus...in a league of their own. I don't think they belong on ANYONE'S shouldn't list....at least if they like music in any form.....just my opine...
Mule is a much better live band than a studio band, which I've slowly learned.
I agree totally. Though I notice myself being more drawn towards the covers and guest appearances than the actual Mule songs they play as the WoW factor for them live for me.....

That too.
I really need to find their Mountain Jam set. Hoping someone actually releases that massiveness.
I looked up the setlist on Google (cough), and wow set 2 looked nuts.
I had left at the end of set 1, as I was tired and wanted to get back to my hotel room in one piece (the road was down a 2000 foot mountain with tons of corners and a very low speed limit.) But Won't Get Fooled Again and War Pigs right before the intermission ... yikes.
Should, but don't: Radiohead - granted I haven't heard a huge amount of their material, but what I have heard never made me want to hear more The White Stripes - some decent to good tunes, and I dig the Raconteurs Nirvana - just think they're overrated, mostly as a result of Kurt's death Arcade Fire - pretty much the same as Radiohead ::edit:: Rage Against the Machine Tool
Shouldn't but do: Basically everythin' from the '80s.
I must say I am honestly bewildered by people not likin' The Beatles. And David Bowie.
Should but don't: The Beatles - I actually hate them. I can't stand their music and I don't get why they are/were so popular. I should like them because I love George Harrison solo and with the Traveling Wilburys but I don't. I also hate McCartney and hope he's at Roo next year so I don't feel so bad about not going.
Mumford & Sons - The Avett Brothers are one of my favorite bands so I should like Mumford & Sons. I don't hate them but they seem to try too hard to fit a certain style. It's like they are trying to be something that they aren't.
Arcade Fire - I think they are boring and I don't understand why that one girl wears such awful looking dresses. She also never smiles which makes her looks like a corpse. Anyways, I tried to get into them by watching concert footage but it always put me to sleep. I ended up skipping them at Roo to get a good spot for late night.
Shouldn't but do: Country music from the 90's: Diamond Rio, Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, Trace Adkins, Brooks and Dunn, Travis Tritt - those type of artists.

It took me a LOOONG time to get into RATM...mostly because I couldn't stand the screaming tone of Zach's voice. But when I could block that out and start listening to the actual music, then slowly could actually listen to the lyrics and get where they were coming from it was like the lightbulb turning on....but it took a while. Actually I think "Know Your Enemy" was the first Rage song that I really liked...
And I LOVE Bowie! Especially the Ziggy and Broken Glass eras. Beatles are meh, love George Harrison the best tho....
Oh yeah, here's another "Should, but don't" .... The Smiths.
^And Streetsweeper is awful. Live show is okay, but that's the extent of it... the records are horrible. On the note, I've never been a fan of MIA, either.

I agree on The Smiths....not my thing but apparently I am in the minority...
As for SSSC....Live they are INCREDIBLE! Their set at VooDoo 2010 was nothing short of insane! At first the crowd was light/medium...by the time the set was halfway through it was PACKED!! One of those shows that brings people in to see what it's all about then just runs on adrenaline!
But I will agree....SSSC is definitely someone that if you aren't a HUGE fan of Tom or Boots, is something to experience live before you can appreciate the recordings. I will admit....I don't listen to the CDs as much as others (go ahead and hate me!) BUT I would NEVER miss them live given the opportunity!
Also, add to my "should but don't" The Who.....they have a couple of AWESOME songs I am into but as a whole...eh. I passed on seeing their last tour when I was in High School just because I didn't want to pay that much for the tickets.....I know...but still don't regret it!
This thread is amazing... I've thoroughly enjoyed reading through it.
I'm sure there's a lot of these I could think of but the first thing that comes to me is Florence and the Machine. She's been all over the radio in my area lately (sometimes even getting 2 slots in the "Top 5 @ 5" for most requested songs of the day), and every time she comes on I HAVE to change the station. Thing is, I really dig a lot of similar music (I even put her name into a music map website to confirm that I SHOULD like her). Oh well...
Also there's a certain kind of artist for me that I really have a ton of respect for and do somewhat enjoy or have specific songs that I think are genius, but just never ever go out of my way to listen to or ever get excited about. In that category the first two that I think of are the White Stripes and the Rolling Stones.
