That was a joke. Eminem deserves a lot more respect than the "zomg why did bonnaroo book a rap headliner" haters give him.
eminem deserves no respect. I'd be down with a rap headliner if we got Nas again, or KRS One, Or De La, or Snoop with Dre (That'd be indredible) btu we didn't we got a vanilla face.
You do realize that a very small percentage of attendees actually use the mind reader right? and of that small percent I'm sure the core demographic is much more likely to listen to GT over BS. I would love for you to be right about us overestimating, as I would like as much room as possible at the BS show. But I'm sure i'm not the only person who bought their ticket for the sole purpose of seeing Buffalo Springfield (though there are many other bands I'd love to see), I'm sure it will be the biggest crowd the which stage has ever had.
There are probably just as many people who bought their ticket to see Eminem. Not all of those people will skip BS, but a lot of them will miss a good chunk of BS. A lot of people will stay at the What after Black Keys and try to move up for Eminem when the BS crowd that's remaining rushes out.

Just like a small percentage of Bonnaroo goers post on Inforoo. Neither Zoltaroo nor this message board are the absolute best indicator of what the attendance will be at each show. There are going to be plenty of diehard Eminem fans who will be camping at the What during BS.

Eminem is a great rapper, has a huge catalog, puts on an incredible show, and will kill it at Roo. Not sure what your issue is, he's one of the better rappers ever, regardless of color.

very true. and despite my comment above, i am actually pretty excited to see eminem.

I'm beginning to realize that midnight-ridin' is just an idiot.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

My only concern is that I have yet to see a video of Eminem performing live where he does not get significant help from a backing track. Can someone make me a believer? I will be at the show regardless, but it kind of takes some excitement away for me.

KRS One was tight for what he did for the culture and game, but honestly...that guy can't/and never could compete with the top lyricists today like Em, Jay, Nas, GZA, Rae, shiiiiet...even Wayne lyrically destroys KRS One. KRS needs to quit complaining and acting insane and just get props where props are meant.
And for those still on here hatin' that Em is a headliner....WHY are you posting on the Eminem thread? To make sure people know you don't like him? C'mon, quit it.
Eminem is ridiculously, RIDICULOUSLY good at rapping. Are you a moron?

If he used a backing track at a festival that prides itself in booking some of the best live acts around, then that would be one of the lamest things I have ever seen. I believe that he will not use one, I hope I am right.
Bad pub is always better than no pub so to all the haters of Eminem, the artist who has sold millions of records and has numerous #1 hits on top of a top selling movie thank you for adding to his popularity. Bottom line is he is a lyrical genius and puts meat in the seats.

I totally agree. Backing tracks are lame. I can't find one video on YouTube where he doesn't use one (for the verses, too) plus a hype-man spitting half of the rhymes. Maybe he'll step up his game at Bonnaroo, but I kinda doubt it.
I take it back...this one sounds like there's no backing track, at least on the verses...
the artist who has sold millions of records and has numerous #1 hits on top of a top selling movie
The same could be said for the spice girls. And Britney Spears.
The spice girls had numerous #1 hits? I had no clue they even had two hits. I gues I should have been more clear on the number of hit because both combined havent had as many as Eninem....Well I dont think. And when you only take a section of something anything can be twisted. As I said he puts meat in the seats and that is what headliners are supposed to do. Can brittany do the same uhhh maybe but she isn't at Roo so I feel the point is moot.
It would be one thing if they had a headliner that couldn't sell tickets or didn't have any hits or only a few hits but that isn't the case here. Could they of had better headliners........yea I am sure they could have and that is coming from a big fan of Eminem but they didnt or couldnt get others and still feel this is a solid headliner. Does it play to the "type of crowd at roo" (whatever that means) maybe not but my view is that roo is a music fest and one that brings in ALL types of music but that is just my view.
According to Billboard.com, Britney has had 3 #1s, Eminem has had 4 and the Spice Girls have had 1. So, it looks like a it's a tie. That was a fun way to waste my last 5 minutes.

My point was that record and ticket sales alone do not make someone a good choice for a headliner. It's all subjective, whether you think someone is good a good headliner choice or a genius or whatever is completely based on your own tastes and perspective. Personally I think Eminem is obnoxious and terrible headliner choice. I'm sure the hords of people at the what stage for his set will prove me wrong though. I'll be at camp eating a ham sandwich. I generally dislike rap or hip-hop and the few shows I have seen I thought were terrible so you can pretty much just ignore me.
JR - Ha ha well who knew. I guess I was wrong, maybe we need to break it down further to top ten hits but I might be wrong again. Picture Brittany and the Spice girls putting on a music fest ekkk thats all I am saying.
Juggs - awesome, thanks for further backing me and was what I was trying to say I just write less but totally true.
Yoderoo - You are right you have your own tastes and that is why other bands are playing as well to give you the choice but as Juggs said he is one of the few that can properly fit the bill for a headliner even if some of the people at roo disagree. You are entitled to what you want to think as is everyone else so hey enjoy the ham sandwich and catch the next act
Here's a quick primer, for those of you working at home:
- Eminem has had lots of hits, and sold lots of units. While this alone is not indicative of talent, it is indicative that he is quite popular, and probably popular enough to headline Bonnaroo.
- Eminem is also a phenomenally talented MC. While he's made his share of questionable songs/albums, if you deny his skill as a rapper you probably don't really like hip-hop.
- Eminem's biggest problem has been his pandering to the idiot masses by recording/releasing foolish songs where he raps in a cartoon voice, or uses homophobic slurs, or anything else that gets the tardbillies of America all happy. (Note: THATS how you use "pandering," Pondo!)
- You might not like his music, but despite his "mainstream" appeal (a term used so often and so inappropriately that it's nearly lost all meaning), he remains one of the few artist who sells a ton of units while maintaining some semblance of critical relevance.
- Finally, acts like Nas, KRS-One (does he even still tour???), Tribe Called Quest, etc. are all great rappers, but they are not "headline" material. This debate has been had over and over again, but the headliners at Bonnaroo are not selected purely for their talent. They also need to have a demonstrated ability to sell lots of tickets - you can't have some f*cking darling of the month indie rock band that just got a 10.0 on Pitchfork, or some hippie noodle-fest jamband that plays 200 seat clubs headline one of the world's largest music festivals, no matter how good they might be. It's the same way with hip-hop: nobody would deny that Rakim is one of the best MCs of all time, but he's not headlining a stage with 75K in front of it in 2011. Headliners need that combination of critical and popular appeal, and like it or not, Eminem is one of the few that fit the bill.
I agree with this for the most part, however unfortunate it may be, except your second point. This "talent" you speak of is quite arguable. But you are completely right about his popularity, which in turns sells tickets, which is obviously the reason Bonnaroo is put on. After all it is a business set out to turn maximum profit.
If the guy has no talent then how did he win rap battles when he was a snot-nosed kid trying to make a name for himself? If the guy has no talent why did Dr. Dre sign him when he was catching some buzz? If the guy has no talent, then why is he respected and hailed as one of the most talented by so many others who are also considered to be the top of the rap spectrum (Jay-Z, Nas, Snoop Dogg, Dre, Kanye, etc.).
I think it's ridiculous to think he has no talent......or that it can be argued that he has none.
I have to admit...when I first saw Eminem as the Headliner for Roo I wasnt "thrilled" about it. The more I thought about it and the closer Roo gets...I am AMPED to see him. I rarely listen to hip hop, although I do follow all genres of music and Eminem was once an artist that I did follow. I have a feeleing that his show is going to leave many of the "trash" talkers with their foot in their mouths. Oh....and to the guy that said he has no talent??? What planet are you from?

Again, the only people who argue Eminem's skill as an MC either a) don't like his music for personal reasons (subject matter, simply don't like rap, whatever), or b) have no clue what makes a good MC a good MC. He's a phenomenal freestyler, has great cadence, and is better at putting together complicated wordplay, simile, metaphor, and punchlines than just about any of his contemporaries.
Personally, I'm not a huge Eminem fan - I think he's way too cartoony most times (in the early days when he was rapping about murdering his wife and eating mushrooms, and now when he raps in Angry Man Voice all the time), but his skill is ridiculous. I actually think that's why I'm not a bigger fan, because I'll hear some song where he completely slays it and get angry that he doesn't do this more often.
agreed the cartooniness bothers me. I admit I thought lyrically and production wise his first 3 albums were pretty good. BUT his voice is just so annoying, which isn't his fault I guess, it's what he's born with. Oh and the single "Im not afraid" is just unforgivable, that song is beyond cheesy, there are no words to express the amount of cheese that is in the song.

And the reason I'm bummed is he's an unopposed headliner. This is the first festival I've gone to where I don't listen to any of the 3 headliners. I just wish that the headliners weren't unopposed then I wouldn't be complaining so much.

There are bands playing during Arcade Fire and Eminem in the On Tap Lounge. Check them out, you might like them enough to go see them.
