Who are some of your all-time favorite producers? Emcees?
When listening to hip-hop, what do you gravitate towards more, the beat or the lyrical content?

Heh sang is a hip-hop head, he's just quackin with me. That picture is classic though. What are your thoughts on the topic at hand, stallion? Favorite emcee? Album?

I have 3rd Bass in my queue of stuff to listen to. Sadly I'm not very well-versed on the '80s hip-hop; I know some of the major players but there's so much I don't know. (Part of the reason I created this thread, I need to be schooled too!)
What do you think of the Medicine Show series stallion? I really enjoyed the latest offering, Low Budget High Fi Music. Really seamless production, as always, and all the guests are really on point. Madlib is probably my favorite producer as well. As far as emcee, I've got to give it to either Common or Nas.
Let's start: What are some of the most slept-on hip-hop artists or albums that you can think of? wu-tang is slept on. i mean everyone knows them and most respect them, but i don't think they realize the talent level of all the members separately. and i know most people don't realize how far the tree branches out and all the talented "wu family" offshoots like sunz of man, killah priest, killarmy, gravediggaz, la the darkman and wu syndicate.
Who are some of your all-time favorite producers? Emcees? my favorite mc's other than wu-tang are mos def and talib kweli, common, black thought, nas, andre 3000 and big boi, cee-lo green when he use to rap. favorite producers, dj premier, dj hi tek, organized noize.
When listening to hip-hop, what do you gravitate towards more, the beat or the lyrical content? i guess i gravitate more to the lyrics. because as i just thinking about favorite mcs and producers i can name a lot more mcs than i can producers. i guess most of the time i don't pay attention to who makes the beats, but i do enjoy them. the rhymes have to be intelligent and saying something other than hoes, money and cars. i like lyrics with some depth to them.

Jay-Z is my favorite of all time. He's great because he represents all of the best things about music to me. His lyrics are incredible, his wordplay and his understanding of the right now, what's hot. But he's also a lot of fun. I realize that music is supposed to say something, educate, teach, and all of that, but it's also supposed to be fun. Some people can get so "conscious" that they forget that music's fun too. I like Jay-Z because he does both for you.
Have you checked out his book, Matt? It's supposed to be pretty cool, breaking down the lyrics of his songs in interesting ways using pictures and write-ups from Hova himself. Rocking The Pharcyde right now. 3rd Bass is next, stallion. You've got me hyped.

Decoded. I have. It's incredible. Aside from the depth of the content it's just a cool piece artistically. It's got great photography, great typography, it's printed on nice paper, etc. And then the content: I considered myself a big fan who knew what most of the lyrics meant, but I still learned a lot. If you're a big fan it's awesome, and if you're not a big fan I think it helps explain his genius even more and might make you a fan.

Have you all ever heard the song "Thin Line" by Jurassic 5? I think it's the best song I've ever heard on the thin line between being friends with someone, or being something more than friends. And if you've ever felt like that it's an incredible feeling, and very volatile, and this song capture's it perfectly.

Good thread, my friend.
I could never name my one favorite hip hop artist or producer so I'll probably just post random thoughts, songs, ideas, etc over the course of this thread and hopefully you can take something from it.
I'll start things off with a few gems by "your favorite rapper's favorite rapper" and a strong candidate for one of the most slept on hip hop artists out there, Devin the Dude
My favorite up-and-comers are probably Black Milk and Curren$y (if Black Milk can even be called an up-and-comer still), those guys were responsible for two of my favorite hip-hop albums of last year other than Big Boi and Kanye West. Also diggin' the OFWGKTA stuff so far.
Sometimes I go for beats and sometimes I go for lyrics (just depends on my mood), but of course, my favorite hip-hop albums master both (see the bottom of this post for five shining examples).
As far as the best producer of all time, how you gonna argue with this guy?:
The only one who might have somethin' to say about that?
As far as my favorite MC, if I'm being honest:
but there's also
The best alliance in hip-hop, WHY-OOOOOOOOOH.
Now, as far as my favorite hip-hop artists ever, it's a reeeeal close race between two groups:
and of course
with
and
close behind. As far as underrated or slept-on albums, here's an all-time classic that doesn't get quite as much buzz as their contemporaries:
And, finally, my favorite hip-hop albums of all-time? That's a real tough list, but here goes:
1) Outkast - Stankonia 2) N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton 3) Eric B & Rakim - Paid in Full 4) Kanye West - Late Registration 5) Jay-Z - The Blueprint
But, it changes ALL the time, so I have no idea what it'll look like in even a couple weeks.
Since no one's mentioned him yet, I gotta bring up Shad. Past few years been really holdin' it down from Toronto - like someone above mentioned, I think he keeps it fun but also educational.
