All of this talk of the space race and no mention of Operation Paperclip
I know it hasn't been confirmed that this is Katie but, if it is, Operation Paperclip was the US recruiting scientists from Germany. Could this be a German act (coming to the US?)
Not German but could it be Coldplay?
Operation paperclip being part of the COLD war... And Coldplay has a pretty popular song, "The scientist" while Operation Paperclip has a lot based on Scientists

Ok...
Clue #1: A trip to space thwarted by a speckled lad's demise. A watershed moment otherwise.
thwarted 1. To prevent the occurrence, realization, or attainment of.
Meaning it never happened. Apollo 13 happened, and they all returned safely so it was not that sad. Apollo 1 and Challenger are the 2 disasters of the space program.
Speckled lad = Kennedy?
On July 1, 1962, the site was renamed the Launch Operations Center, achieving equal status with other NASA centers; and on November 29, 1963, the facility received its current name by Executive Order 11129 following Kennedy's death.[5]
Something sad at the Kennedy space center is an explosion in the sky...
Who just so happens to start touring in April - May... (holding off the dates)

Just going out on a limb here... But, I'm sorta thinking Flight of the Conchords here. Their demise was not being able to have a 3rd season. Flight is not exactly "a trip to space," but I am just trying to be a wishful thinker here.
I actually thought about them too...but it wouldn't be that easy. Just whoever the clue makes you think of would most definitely not be the right answer.
N.A.S.A., and their worldwide debut The Spirit of Apollo, is an ongoing creative collaboration between two lifelong music aficionados, Squeak E. Clean and DJ Zegon, and their friends, friends of friends and musical heroes.
While N.A.S.A. stands for North America/South America and contains a number of superstar artists from both coasts of the U.S., it is about as far from a tension-building geographical showdown as a record can get. Rather, The Spirit of Apollo was born with the righteous goal of bringing people together through music and art, and that is exactly what masterminds Sam Spiegel (Squeak E. Clean) and Ze Gonzales (DJ Zegon) have done.

in that light i say Trans Siberian Orchestra I know they're American, name fits, and Paul O'neil has some influence across the times.
I hate this guess and how i came to it, all in good fun i guess..
In Donnie Darko, Donnie's sister is on a plane to be on Star (space?) Search, the plane piece that breaks off and kills Donnie (who is speckled with 'wormhole' trails?) while the Tears For Fears (watershed) cover of Mad World plays. Thwarted is what I can't work in, gotta reach with her trip possibly not happening because her brother died. All that to get to... someone from the Darko Soundtrack?

I also thought it could be tears for fears. GREAT GUESS!
Tears for Fears didn't cover Mad World...they wrote it.
the gary jules cover is playing during the scene. gary jules doesn't fit the watershed hint, so i referred to the song playing as the 'tears for fears cover'. i suppose i should have said 'cover of the tears for fears song' instead
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver
I think it might be Weezer. They abandoned a space themed rock opera early in their career (around '95) called "Songs from the Black Hole". Its never been released, but was otherwise a watershed moment since it was around the time of the Blue Album and Pinkerton
