i think local natives should be included by the way. it came out in the uk last year but no one had heard it and wouldn't have counted it that year. so it's to never be counted?
^I'm curious to see on what percentage of lists it shows. If it isn't included, I'm going to assume they opted out, because there's no reason it shouldn't be somewhere on a list unless they opt out.

I absolutely loved the Kanye when I first heard it, but I've grown more and more sour on it since that first listen. The production is incredible, but the lyrical content really wears me down with each listen. The decadence and self-praising really isn't something I get into when I listen to hip-hop. It's still one of the best hip-hop records of the year for sure. I wish I knew more about what was going on in the underground hip-hop scene, because I only heard a few records this year that I really liked. Any suggestions Mike?
I feel like people making these lists either a) don't really like hip-hop, b) haven't heard My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy yet, or c) are letting their semi-irrational Kanye hate get in the way, because there's no way that album should be absent from so many lists.
You are correct on B and C for me, but im sure I will listen to it at some point.

Juggs, that Strong Arm Steady record is just phenomenal. You, sir, have an impeccable taste in hip-hop.
That said, you didn't think the Clipse record was disappointing? Granted, I only gave it a couple spins, but it seemed just a little too generic to me. I LOVE their first two records, though, and Pusha T is a colossally underrated MC.

I didn't think it was disappointing, but it did take a few listens before I decided how much I liked it. Hearing them on production other than that provided by The Neptunes was different and turned out fine. I also really liked they showed a little more versatility in their lyrics. They had more introspective and commentative moments than usual. I don't know how I would rank it compared to the previous releases, but I definitely enjoyed it. Both Malice & Pusha have great deliveries and clever word play. There aren't many rappers out there who can hold their own against them.

A) I like hip/hop quite a bit. B) I've listened to it five times, and it got worse with each listen. C) Wasn't here for the Roo Meltdown in 08, but I think his first two albums are pretty brilliant, his last two albums were below average but had their moments, but can't stand the new album largely because I believe it's terrible. There's not a single song on the album that couldn't be cut down by at least a minute, but I've ranted enough about it previously in the thread.
My top 10: 1. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs 2. The National - High Violet 3. Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid 4. Gorillaz - Plastic Beach (itunes version) 5. Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty 6. The Black Keys - Brothers 7. The Drums - The Drums 8. The Chemical Brothers - Furthur 9. Matthew Dear - Black City 10. James Blake's EPs

MBDTF is good, but its overpraised. Just because its different from a lot of other hip hop records doesn't make it spectacular. There are some high points, but I wasn't overly impressed with Kanye's lyrical performance. Plus his attempts at singing bring the album down. The production is good, but what else would you expect from the producers he used. At times the beats were over exaggerated and extended in an attempt to make the album seem advanced instrumentally. But it was pointless, considering, for the most part, it was just additional loops. I thought it was good, but not great. I still like Graduation and College Dropout better.
Not that he doesn't have any appeal to other fan bases, but Kanye is largely for the rock/pop crowd, college kids, or those who only really hear mainstream hip hop and want something better. In that sense he delivers.

I just don't think that's accurate, approo. I'd say Kanye's appeal is pretty universal; there aren't many pop stars besides him who can lay claim to that.
And, to sort of echo what juggs said earlier in a sort-of wider scope, the people that hate him or don't like him either a) don't like hip-hop; b) haven't heard his music; or c) hate him for reasons beyond his actual music.
