While everyone gushes about an aging Westbrook the Thunder have accumulated 8 additional 1st round picks. Not an OKC fan but I like their side of this trade with what they're trying to do. Unless the NBA allows the game to be played with two basketballs--then there will enough to go around in Houston.
Amazing quote. Love that episode and show, but it makes no sense here. Watch any :30 snippet of any Westbrook highlight video and compare it to these neighborhood milkmen. Westbrook would probably beat them in literally any athletic competition known to man.
You're really exaggerating by saying they're milkmen. They are clearly fast, and coordination is part of being athletic.
I think the quote is relevant because they're way better "athletes" than Kenny Powers is and your definition of athletic seems to be who would be good at a decathlon.
Like, are offensive linemen athletic? In my opinion, they clearly are, even though most of them are big fat guys (and many are even white!)
NFL offensive lineman have superhuman measurables in the areas that matter to their position. They are strong as fuck and there is obviously a ton of muscle underneath all of that weight. They are also very quick to be able to keep up with the Von Millers of the world. The line in the NFL is home to some of the most intense and unappreciated athletic competition in the world on almost every single down. Just fuggin titans slamming into each other play after play after play.
And by the way I do think a decathlon would be a better determinant of athleticism than dancing around and throwing cute passes on a bball court.

Everyone watch out for the Thunder 7 years from now.
Seriously, this sucks for OKC. They are a small market that was held up for the last decade by probably the best 3 year stretch of drafting by a team in NBA history. They have done the right thing by collecting all these picks, but they are about to enter some dark years that they aren't used to.

I mean, I tend to think it's not a great fit, but people said the same thing about Paul and Harden. Curry and Durant won a title together. LeBron and Kyrie did. You can have two elite ball dominant guys and make things work. It will be interesting to see whether the Rockets can, but I don't think it's right to assume it can't.
Also, pretty much everyone here is expressing that they have issues with Westbrook's game. I was joking. I didn't really want them to trade for him, as a Rockets fan. Maybe they can work it out. Maybe not. But the "two basketballs" cliche is simply not true.
I do think a decathlon would be a better determinant of athleticism than dancing around and throwing cute passes on a bball court.
I know you do. But the culture doesn't really see it that way, is part of my point.
We just have different views of what an athlete is. To me, NBA Hall of Famers, two of the best to ever play their position, are elite athletes, and their creativity and ability passing, what you consider "cute" and I consider the job of a point guard, speaks to that. It's not compensation for their lack of athleticism, it's an aspect of it.
And the Thunder traded Harden for a bag of beans over a 5 million dollar negotiating disparity. After moving the Sonics away from Seattle. It's hard for me to feel sorry for them.

What culture are you talking about? I think you'd be very alone shouting from the mountaintops that Pistol Pete is someone that should go down in history as an elite athlete among athletes. I think it'd be pretty easy to get most people on board with this concept of pure athleticism vs skill.
Having said that, I don't think there have been enough culture defining conversations in the world of sports to differentiate topics for shit like this. I'm sure there are scholarly papers, but nothing that everyone understands and agrees upon.
Like every time the olympics come around I get in these fun arguments about which sports require the greatest athletes. Why I hate "sports" that require judges in the olympics. Which is more of a pure sport between "games" and "athletic competitions that don't require you to react to an opponent."
Or something else I say is that NFL Players are obviously more athletic than NBA players because the height requirement in the NBA immediately eliminates like 75% of the population whereas almost anyone can be a football player if they are born healthy. However, this will shift as time moves on and parents continue to not want their kids to play football due to concussions.
I view those convos as fun, but everyone I talk to gets suuuper fucking pissed instantly for some reason. Now I'm drifting into way different territory.
What I mean by the culture is that we celebrate guys like Pete Maravich as a culture moreso than some of the best track and field athletes to ever run fast, or whoever got second to Michael Phelps in the Olympics, or whoever the best shotputter of all time is. Sure, we know about Phelps and Bolt and Carl Lewis and stuff, but Pete Maravich isn't the best basketball player of all time. Like, who's the current World's Strongest Man? Do you even care? That's measurable.
And I disagree about NBA vs NFL, or at least your rationale for it. NFL players have to be pretty freakish body types, too. I don't think anyone can play football if they try, certainly not professional or even D-I. But I think even being an insanely tall guy in the NBA who's slow because of your size or whatever, you're still what I'd consider athletic because it's amazing you can move even as fast as you do.
I've had this argument before, like eight years ago or something, when my friend said Joakim Noah wasn't athletic. I guess I just said a lot of the stuff I'm saying now. I just don't see how you can say a successful NBA player isn't athletic at all, which is clearly not exactly what your point is about Maravich. You're not saying Maravich "isn't athletic", you're saying he's not as athletic as Russ or someone. But for someone to not only make the NBA but excel at it, I would consider that person athletic. I consider Yao Ming athletic. And I can see what you're saying that, for example, Dwight Howard is more athletic because he can jump higher and move faster, but Yao usually got the better of Dwight when they played (before Yao's body fell apart because of how big he was), and they're playing the same position at the highest level of a sport, so who's the superior athlete? I can distinguish between athleticism and ability, but I don't think it's the same line that some people do, I guess.
And yeah, I think Cousy and Maravich would still be great at their sport if they played today. They didn't get to the status they did by being only as fast or as quick as the average YMCA gym-star, and I'll reiterate that their passing ability and coordination is a form of athleticism.
But we can go in circles forever on this. Who do you consider the least athletic NBA player right now? Not just the worst, but by your definition of athleticism. I'd imagine it would be a center?
Idk his name but I think the guy who played The Mountain on GoT is (or very nearly is) the world's strongest man. I know he's won strongman competitions and set world records.

I just heard a story this morning about how a Clemson assistant football coach took his son to see Westbrook play. He said I've played college football and coached, coached guys that are playing in NFL. He said Westbrook is the greatest athlete he's ever seen in person.

Crab Mech I think being tall enough to play in the NBA is just a lottery ticket. Especially if you are a 7 footer or something youre basically a trust fund baby compared to like 5’6” Maurice Jones Drew who had to become a physical monster to succeed in the NFL. Now, Nate Robinson and Spudd Webb? Also unreal athletes. But its much more common in the NFL.
Another way to tell is that NBA players play longer into their late thirties than NFL players outside of QBs who, wait for it, I consider to be way less athletic in the sense that Im talking about than a linebacker or running back.
Im not certain about least athletic NBA players right now. Id have to think for a bit. Would have been eyeing Dirk just before he retired but Im sure there are others im not thinking of.
I guess I kind of attribute coordination / skill to a form of learned intelligence that requires brain power whereas Im focusing on fitness measurables for athleticism.
Oh and how much we celebrate someone means nothing to me in the context of this conversation.

He did not win this year. Some of us DO care about the most yoked man.

Won the year before tho didn't he?
Also, fun fact - he started out as a basketball player in Iceland #athlete

I'm a Harden hater but we only use true shooting % now grandpa. Harden is still efficient af.
Well you could take it as a knock on Harden. But most people think Harden is a good shooter. No one thinks of Westbrook as a good shooter. They've been the same in the playoffs. I realize Westbrook takes closer shots, which is probably what your garbage "real" shooting % means.

Harden makes more threes and more free throws, so he's more efficient. part of the benefit of being the god of flopping.
Lots of new multi-player super teams this year to compete. But I'm going to submit that we have the most "potential" future stars on one team and should be the most interesting and probably entertaining team in basketball this year running highlight reel play after highlight reel play.
We're going to simultaneously be good and suck. But besides Zion Williamson, we've got an assload of hungry young players in Lonzo's Balls, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, Jaxson Hayes, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Didi Silva (who will probably be stashed overseas for a season or so) and Chris Wood. I think Alexander-Walker may be the most underrated of the group.

I'm surprised by the reaction to the Westbrook trade, not just here but everywhere. One of the best 5 teams in the NBA added an MVP candidate, if I were a Rockets fan I would be over the moon about this.
I've been pretty on board with the idea since talking myself into being down with it as soon as George got traded. If it works we have a real shot at winning it all, if it doesn't we probably won't be that much worse and still probably in position to luck into a finals appearance (GSW taking a step back, Bron/AD not working, etc)

Rockets signed Tyson Chandler today, hoping they land Igoudala as well.
Westbrook/Harden/Gordon/Tucker/Capela, Iggy and Chandler providing defense off the bench, with Rivers/House/Green providing bench shooting, ooo baby, you got a stew going
