man, its funny to hear everyone talk about what cool music their parents listened to. My dad has all right taste in music, but nothing amazing and to this day anytime I put on anything new he moderately likes he'll say " that's pretty good, is that Hootie ?"

My dad has decent taste in music but he has never evolved. First decent concert my parents took me to was Deep Purple - but they never got into the dead or "hippie music" as they call it because my dad was in the Air Force.
Now - when I told them yesterday that we were going to Bonnaroo again - his response was "One day you'll grow up"
I have been on these forums for over a year now, and this November it will be two. I love everyone here, this is like my farm away from the farm ;D With that said, I've gotten used to the typical "corparoo" thing. Last year made total sense, Metallica and Kanye, yada yada. I get that. This year, I was not shocked, but still a bit surprised that people are still complaining about the lineup. So I just want to say something that I think you can all agree with when it comes to Bonnaroo
The reason we all go is not only the music, but the acceptance of all others' musical tastes. Am I right? Yea, we all complain about the "frat boys" and hipsters, but honestly, I accept every person as who they are, not by some label. I expect most of the people at the farm to do the same. Everybody has flaws, and just because someone is a new roo-comer and happens to be a hipster, frat boy, or whatever negative term you choose to call them, doesn't mean your perfect either ;D I may be ranting here, but I just feel all these negative labels we put on crowds negatively affects the festival itself. People start saying how the fest just wants our money and want not, and how the lineup is getting too mainstream because we start associating the fest with these imaginary labels we say. People are just that, PEOPLE
Let's all just appreciate that we're all ABLE to go to such a great event, and that such a great event even exists in todays world. And for those of you not going, please just make sure your going because of a legit reason, not because it's going "corporate"
P.S- Sorry for ranting
totally agree... and if you do decide to leave your brand new volvo in the garage and stay home to watch hannity and colmes... just remember that there is no other place on earth that we can get together and see (to use last years lineup as an example) metallica, willie nelson AND lupe fiasco, all in one place... with the atmosphere of a giant family reunion...
i think the fact that the "frat boys, and hipsters" probably look at the rest of us in the exact same manner that we look at them. they have a right to be there just like we do... and their participation only adds to the aura of it all... IT DOES NOT DETRACT FROM IT...

im just wondering where TheDudes been since the Phish announcement. i want know what he thinks of the whole situation. I bet he has some unique sentiments
The one thing that I like about Bonnaroo is that, yes, there is corporate sponsorship. But it is not done in the way most festivals do it by naming their stages by corporate sponsorships. Instead Bonnaroo has activity installations that are corporate sponsored. So if you go to Bonnaroo for the music, then its very unlikely you will come upon anything corporate. I think thats why Bonnaroo is as big as it is.

Any true Rooian would not complain about the lineup. Bonnaroo is much more than just music. It is a place where 80,000 + come together like a huge family reunion. Where we can enjoy the one true thing that we do not get to enjoy the other 361 days of the year. Unless it is a leaper year than the other 362 days of the year

I know I'm beating a dead hipster to death when I say; I agree totally with all ya'll. Just the other day here in DC a kid in a local band (he's never been to ROo) was trashing the festival,"too many big names....commercial....sell out...Fuse...too big...not what it was...." etc. Gimme a break buddy (that goes for all the whiners), there are far too many bands to keep one occupied included in the line-up are smaller bands, ie. Carney- some band I stumbled on as I was escaping the sun's rays in the (oh no!) "Budweiser" tent- they were quacking awesome, then I went and saw me some MMJ and felt pretty damn good about my perdicament. I ramble, but to quote TooL "I sold out long before you ever knew my name..."
I don't mind having a few "corporate/mainstream" acts at 'roo, because otherwise I don't think I'd ever see them. Gov't Mule I'd go to see (and I have) if they were playing locally and I had the time. But I don't think I'd EVER get it into my head to go to a Snoop Dogg show if it weren't at a place like 'roo. I don't know, I might hate it, if I do I'll just wander off to another show, but I might think it's the best thing ever, get my hair 'rowed again, turn on, tune in and drop out and go on Snoop tour (well, maybe not that far). Anyways, my $0.02. Oh yeah, and I'm back, hi everyone. Leo
As for me last year was my first roo. The main reasons for me going were Metallica and Pearl Jam. During my four days on the farm I just happened to wander into a few shows I really enjoyed and didn't even know who it was that was playing. One of the high points for me last year was Umphreys. They had a killer show and without Bonnaroo I would still have no clue who they are. Bonnaroo is a great place. It introduces people to a lot of music and people they probably wouldn't find on there own. I for one will be at Bonnaroo every year no matter who is on the lineup.

Hi Leo...right on the money bro.. People were complaining about Metallica and Pearl Jam last year which to me was ridiculous. Now I am not a big fan of either. well let me rephrase I WAS actually a huge Metallica fan 25 years ago when they first came out (they were the baddest ass metal/thrash poop going at thet time they put thrash on the map) but have not been to a concert or owned an album by them since like 1988. and I thought Pearl jams set last year was killer so was Metallica's by the way IMO. Neither of these bands would I have seen again if I had not attended 'roo. and this year...Bruce, Snoop, Beastie, and many many more are bands that I like ok but would never go to a show of just them...but will see them this year along with bands I am unfamiliar with that is the beauty of the music fest. finding new bands to enjoy and possibly rediscovering some long lost loves.
I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name right---P.T. Barnum "As I was walking up the stairs I met a man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today I wish to God he'd go away."
