The Flaming Lips had grown a bit stale for me as well, so this is great news to hear because I am going to see them tonight with JEFF the Brotherhood. Can't wait.
The Flaming Lips were great last night. I had zero remaining interest in them as a live band before they changed up the live show, so it was exciting to rediscover how good they can be when they aren't d*cking around. It's like finding a favorite shirt that's been buried in the back of the closet for a year. The set was heavy on The Terror and other moodier material, but it flowed really well. It's easier to maintain momentum when Wayne isn't shouting "come on, motherf*ckers" for 5 minutes between every song. Most of the crowd wasn't feeling it, though.
The Black Keys were pretty dull.
I heard something very similar from my buddy. I had a ticket and didn't go because I wasn't in the mood for the Flaming Lip circus/cluster-f*ck during a stressful work week. I've seen the old show 4 times and I'm sick of it. I've been really wanting them to tone it down and focus on newer material, which I think has been uncompromising and fantastic. Kicking myself for staying home now.

The new material sounds so good live, and it's the focus of the show, too. The only "hits" were Do You Realize and WAND. Honestly, much of the crowd looked bored or confused, but The Black Keys do draw a lot of radio rock dudes these days.
The biggest difference was in how engaged they seemed with the songs. I thought the old show had devolved to the point where the songs were incidental, just an excuse for the hamster ball and confetti. They actually seem to care about the pacing and flow of the setlist now.

Do You Realize is kind of a must. Everybody loves that song. I was hoping they would strip it all down for a tour of Embryonic material for a live jam session, but that never happened. My biggest issue with old show was, like you said, pacing and flow. They couldn't even get through some of the songs without Wayne rambling, let alone what went on between songs.

Sooooooooo... I just got back from this show. It was raining pretty heavily and I was standing under the edge of the roof near the artists entrance door trying to unload a ticket. Then I see a frizzy haired guy dressed all in metallic blue walking from the buses. It was Wayne Coyne with I think his manager or something. He got within about 10 yards of me and all of the people standing around.
No one saw him or recognized him I guess and I yelled out "Hey Wayne!" He heard me and walked right over to me and acknowledged me while his manager was knocking on the door to get in. I told him that "I am really excited to hear the new material." Then he said something along the lines of "I don't think we've ever been here before, have we?" I said, "no, i don't believe so." And he smiled, he seemed to be pretty excited too.
About that time, everyone around me was begging him for pictures and he was gracious and took about 8-10 with various people. I was by myself and didn't bother asking (kicking myself for that now), but it was really cool and he seemed pretty down to earth (albeit a bit odd - as expected) and genuinely excited and happy to perform.
The show was pretty great, the banter and gimmicks were toned down a lot from all the other shows of theirs I've seen. The music was a bit darker/harder than I'm used to hearing from them but I liked it. They had some pretty bad feedback issues until about mid set when it was fixed and they played two encores.
Sorry, I've been balls deep in jazzfest since thursday and haven't been on inforoo. Deerhunter was absolutely incredible. I got the setlist! encore was Pensacola. There was a good bit of story telling and improve jams too. The jammed out for quit a while on monomania. I was hoping they would have the new album available on vinyl at show, but they only had Cryptograms and the Microcastle / Weird Era Cont. vinyl. The drummer and bass player were just hanging out after the show...talked to them for a minute and they were super cool duders. There were so many young kids at this show and they just stood and watched the whole show looking like a dog that had been shown a card trick (even when Bradford stood on the barricade and was in their faces trying to get a rise out of them). I think me, couple of my friends, a chick that drove all the way from Tallahassee, and a couple of other ladies were literally the only people dancing at this show. Pensacola is such a lame crowd in comparison to NOLA.

It was a good night.
This was our first FLips show, first Jeff the Brotherhood experience, and first experience with Track29. It was amazing on all fronts! Jeff the Brotherhood has amazing stage presence and they can seriously rock! FLips was a great spectacle and the crowd had good energy. Track29 was fun, how many warehouses can you visit and get high grav Terrapin ale and homemade gelato at the same time? It was a great experience.
Sorry about the delay, work has kept me away. Most of my pics were dreadful, but they sounded incredible. The 5 guys came out and started to jam slowly building into Diarabi. Once they hit full swing the two vocalists came out and started stomping and shaking themselves and percussive instruments around. Really high energy from start to finish and they melded songs into each other and it was easy to get caught off guard. They played 2 tracks not off the most recent album. The vocalists spent the entire time they weren't singing dancing and interacting with those of us in the first row.
I'll take another look through my photos now and post anything that looks decent.
Last night I saw Goat and WOW. What a cool band. The guys who were the primary musicians were dressed in colorful robes, masks, and hats, giving a mysterious cult-like vibe. The vocalists were two women (I didn't realize there were two on the album) dressed in hippie/belly dancer attire with masquerade feather masks. They danced, and frolicked and ran around on stage with hand percussion instruments and finger cymbals. They put as much or more effort into the dance performance as the singing. When the band jammed, they turned into a beast. After "Goatlord", the vocalists left the stage and the band ended the show with one of the most barn burning jams I've ever heard. Just sick as hell. The songs they played that weren't from World Music were from the Dreambuilding 7". I'm just speculating here, but it seemed like a good amount of people weren't exactly there for Goat due to the show being a Shaky Knees Fest after party as well as the Black Angels playing. But after everybody got it a few songs in, they received enormous cheers and applause and won everybody over. I'm so happy I got chance to see them and the end of their short U.S. tour. Their whole approach to presenting the material on stage as performance with costume and dance was really unique and refreshing. We've all seen the typical rock setup with a front man, everyday attire, and stage lights hundreds of times, so it was nice to see it done differently and with the songs that back it all up. My wife says it may have been the best show she's ever seen.
Here's a crappy picture (not all band memebers are shown):

Black Keys/Flaming Lips on Friday was awesome! I was in great company too, that never hurts. Silliness and mischief abound! 2 Thursdays ago, Mike D gifted me a couple of tickets to BB King at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. That shiz was amazeballs.

I have been debating about The Black Keys + Flaming Lips, they are playing literally right down the street from me in July. I have been reading such good things about FL on here recently, I think I have been convinced. sounds like it will be a fun show!
Friday was officially the greatest day ever. Fiyafest at Mardi Gras World was absolutely incredible. For $80 there was unlimited booze and food on top of all the great music. We completely gorged ourselves on crawfish, jambalaya, brisket, pizza, etc the first couple of hours we were there. Double-fisting drinks the whole time. Top shelf liquor and hetty beers on tap. The beer ran out around 6ish, but the liquor never did. Gotdamn, if we would have drank this much at any festival it would have cost us over $300 each. They had a huge mardi gras float all lit up with these psychedelic lights that looked amazing. The sound was incredible. lineup/schedule for fiyafest was:
2:20pm- 3:20pm The New Orleans Suspects with The Bonerama Horns
3:40pm- 4:40pm Big Sam-Terence Higgins-Roosevelt Collier-Nigel Hall-Doug Wimbish-Khris Royal-Eric McFadden
5:00pm- 6;00pm Dragon Smoke: Ivan Neville-Stanton Moore-Robert Mercurio-Eric Lindell
6;00pm- 6:15pm Roots of Music
6:20pm- 7:20pm GABE: George Porter-Anders Osborne-Billy Iuso-Eric Bolivar
7:40pm- 8:40pm Dr. Klaw: Eric Krasno-Nigel Hall-Ian Neville-Adam Deitch-Nick Daniels
9:00pm- 10:00pm Karl Denson-Dirty Dozen Brass Band Horns-Nikki Glaspie-Robert Walter-Eddie Roberts-Jenn Hartswick-Natalie Cressman
We left after Dr. Klaw though so we could make it to the Gov't Mule show.
Gov't Mule show friday night@ Mahalia Jackson Theater was a perfect show. We were 8th row in this beautiful theater. I've been to three shows there (Louis C.K., Leonard Cohen, and this Mule show) and this one was by far the most fun. It was also by far the greatest Gov't Mule show that everyone there that I talked to had ever seen. The setlist was f'n insane:
Set 1 Are You Experienced? Any Open Window Angel Broke Down On The Brazos > Tributary Jam When Doves Cry > Beautifully Broken > When Doves Cry > Beautifully Broken Lively Up Yourself with Ivan Neville Hunger Strike > Dear Mr. Fantasy > Hunger Strike Mule > with It's Your Thing Lyrics; Shakedown Street Tease > Whole Lotta Love > Mule
Set 2 There's No Way Out Of Here Presence Of The Lord I'm A Ram > Love Me Do > I'm A Ram On Your Way Down with Jonathon 'Boogie' Long, Rob Ingraham & Mike Girardot Ventilator Blues with Rob Ingraham, Ed williams, David Shaw, Zack Feinberg, Mike Girardot & Smoky Greenwell Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody's Home with Ike Stubblefield The Hunter > with Alvin 'Youngblood' Hart & Smoky Greenwell Good Morning Little Schoolgirl > with Alvin 'Youngblood' Hart & Smoky Greenwell The Hunter with Alvin 'Youngblood' Hart & Smoky Greenwell Slackjaw Jezebel
Encore Get Behind The Mule with Ike Stubblefield & Brian Stoltz; Going Out West Tease; Get Up Offa That Thing, Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Nothing & Woodstock Lyrics

That's a great setlist for Mule longinus. Soulshine was great for the rain and mud when I saw them this past Saturday as was On The Banks Of The Deep End>Ohio on the shores of the Mississippi.

I can't find it now, or I would link it, but I read that Bradford really weirded some people out in Pensacola. Apparently he was rambling, saying how he was drunk and on acid, making crazy guitar sounds, and telling everybody to fuck the pigs. Any truth to this? Care to elaborate?
Oh yeah, dude. He didn't say he was on acid. He was telling a story about a friend of his when they were kids and how they had to run from the quacking pigs and his friend had a sheet of acid on him but didn't have pockets so he put it in the waistband of his soccer shorts. So after running for a while and he started to sweat, he absorbed the entire sheet and lost his mind for about a week. Quack the pigs was like his entire theme for the last half of the show. He went into this rant about it for a while and then they played this really tripped out jam where he was just randomly yelling things like Quack the quackin' pigs, I Quackin hate pigs don't you?, etc. My friend and I were laughing our donkeys off, but many of these kids just had no idea that he was quacking with them. Also, he was playing guitar using one of those bar lights on the floor during that jam.

See, this would make me laugh, too. And seeing the kids get uncomfortable would make it even funnier for me. I figured it was just unsuspecting kids going out to see a popular "indie" band.

Just got home from allston and saw lady lamb the beekeeper. Aly showed up dressed in all black except her boots and wore her hair up i think i feel in love when she played regarding ascending the stairs.
Saw Zac Brown Thursday at Red Rocks and it was good but not epic. Then saw them again last night there and they KILLED it. When they fired up the encore with Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb killin the lights dressed like this I just lost it. The guitar playing was the best I've seen since Steve Morrison toured with Deep Purple at the Rock holy quack!

that looks cool, I love that song! I had never listened to them before but I caught the second half of their show at roo in 2010 and was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked them.
actually, off topic but I have stumbled across several artists there in previous years that I had never heard before, and can't think of any that were outright terrible. if nothing else, it seems like all of the artists at roo are talented musicians in whatever their genre.
For whatever reason, Deerhunter opening was supposed to be kept as somewhat of a secret. For those of us who really cared, it was fairly easy to find out ahead of time, but the venue eventually posted it on their website the day of the show (after Creative Loafing announced the day before). The first song we heard when they took the stage was actually not a song by the band, but "Happy Birthday" sung by the audience to Bradford Cox. In the beginning, it felt like a very special night with the surprise Deerhunter opening set, Cox's birthday, Deerhunter's hometown, Cox's well documented love of the Breeders, and the celebration of the new album. However, what followed was the most underwhelming Deerhunter set I've seen in the close to 20 times I've seen them. But, it was still a pleasant and charming set with some excellent highs.
The opened with Agorophobia, and went into Don't Cry, and either Revival or Famous Last Words (I can't remember). Bradford stopped a couple songs in to talk about how much the Breeders meant to him. His story was that his mom bought him Last Splash on his 11th birthday. He says it's one of his favorite albums of all time and wouldn't be making music if it wasn't for it. He also said hi to his mom and his family, who were in attendance.
My wife kept saying something seemed "off" about the set. I think maybe the were a little nervous and hesitant to let loose with their families, wives, and girlfriends in attendance. They were also opening for one of their heroes. Bradford screwed up on Blue Agent and an audience member called him out for having his fly down. Who knows, but the set did get a lot better as they got into the new songs and my wife swooned during the Lockett songs (her rock star crush).
The last half of the set included the new songs THM, Sleepwalking, Back to the Middle, Monomania, and Punk. They band seemed much more into the new songs. Bradford apologized to his family right before starting THM (I guess because he was about to call his kid brother insane), he put his guitar down for a great frontman performance during Sleepwalking and seemed to be helping Frankie, the new guitarist, with how to play a certain part during Back to the Middle. Monomania was a freaking beast and was everything I love about Deerhunter. It was an incredible, all engulfing wall of noise that's just terrific live. I wish the whole set had that much sound, danger, emotion and it's something I know they are capable of doing. The ended the song Punk with a long, extended ambient part using the feedback from their instruments. It was pretty great.
I think the set would have been a lot better had it been a headlining set. I over heard someone talking in the smoking section who thought the same why I did. The psychedelic and noisey aspects of the band were largely left out except for at the end of the set. Recent setlists show them playing encores with Lake Somerset and we didn't get anything off of Cryptograms. I could have used another hour of music. There is so much they didn't get to.
The Breeders killed it. They thanked Bradford for getting them some instruments that they used in the original recording of Last Splash, shouted him out for being the birthday boy, and made fun of his last name. They also rocked the house and their 90's aesthetic never sounded so good. I highly recommend seeing this show when it comes to your town.

Damn that sucks. I wonder what enticed the fan to throw the bottle. This reminded me of seeing Toots at Wakarusa. He berated the sound guy several times during the show telling him that he was a legend and asking why he could not get his vocals right. When the crowd called for an encore Toots returned followed quickly by the stage hand signaling for the sound to be cut with the throat slashing motion. The stage hand and sound guy were then showered by the crowd with plastic bottles.
Ouch. You can hear the bottles impact on Toots heads in the video attached to that link.

Unfortunately, that's just Richmond. For every amazing person you meet here, there's 4 douches next in line.
EDIT: Before I forget, Last night was great. I didn't see any of this going on. I was in the back. All I knew was that the show was over and people were leaving. Today was the first I heard about any of this.
