Right?! We don't have that shit in California either. We also don't have tax holidays, which I've learned very recently exist in other places. WTF?
You have holidays we dont have. We used to get Pulaski day but they took it away from us, bastards.
We do? The only one I can think of is Cesar Chavez day, and only state employees get it. And me, because we go by the state university holiday schedule wooooo.
So I normally don't work Fridays. And in Rhode Island, it's a holiday weekend. (I never heard of Victory Day until I started dating Heather, it's apparently a thing they made up just in RI.) Heather told me to take Monday off from work, 'cause you know... holiday weekend.
So yeah, hello four day weekend.
Here, the last Friday in October is Nevada Day, which is great because it pretty much always means a long weekend around Halloween.
It scared the hell out of me when I realized that I straight up made up my dads name on my marriage certificate (on Halloween). Thankfully the certificate place was still open.

Tax Holidays are the jam.
There's one in Massachusetts, either this weekend or the next.
Though normal people go to New Hampshire the other 363 days of the year, if they're close enough. There's actually a mall where the entire building is in NH, the state line is literally a few feet south of the JCPenney and Sears, and a third to maybe half of the parking lot is in Mass.
A short period of time when the state doesn't charge sales tax, usually limited to certain types of items. I think they often happen around back-to-school time, when they apply to things like school supplies and clothes. I think I've heard of them applying to bigger ticket items like appliances in some cases.
In Texas, the only tax holiday I'm aware of is right before school starts. For one weekend, things related to school supplies are tax free. I think clothes/shoes might included too?
Either way, the malls/stores are a living hell. I accidentally wandered into one without knowing one time...turned right back around and left!

ooooh. NYS used to do that. Then they changed the sales tax on certain things and away went tax free week.
As far as made-up holidays go, Massachusetts and Maine get Patriots' Day. Okay, so it's not really made up, but it does make you feel pretty smug when the 48 other states are busy working like a buncha chumps. With apologies to the residents of New Hampshire's stately 18-mile coastline. That also means next year, 4/20 will be a public holiday... and in a decriminalized state? Well, that's just peachy.
Tax holidays are overrated, unless you're already planning on buying a big ticket item. Save ~$6-7 for every $100 I spend? Eh. I'm not getting off the couch for that.
Oh yeah - the real reason I came into this thread? They're making a mini-documentary about the (tied for) best show I've seen all year! That being the Giorgio Moroder orchestral tribute concert. It was a damn magical night, and hopefully this will help a few of you drink the Heritage Orchestra Kool-Aid I've been chugging ever since I first saw them.
You all got me excited thinking a tax holiday was a day off of work. BAH!
I was thinking that is what they were talking about! (And CT does have that tax free week on clothes, but I have never heard of it referred to as a holiday)
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

This is an anticipatory "yay" because I am, fingers crossed and hoping, that this guy agrees to do some tat work on either me or Rance or both of us (if we can afford him at all). I found one of the best tattoo artists I have ever seen and he is doing a convention here in three weeks! He is from Pittsburgh, but I am hoping that for somewhat reduced cost, he'll work on one of us for the contests. His realism and portraits are insane! Or, at least we'll be able to meet with him at the convention and make plans. I've been anxiously awaiting to hear back from him alllllllllll day.

watched two of my childhood friends get married yesterday, now i'm on the road for a trip to the adirondacks! i'll be off the grid for hopefully a beautiful vacation. i hope everyone has a wonderful week here!
Crossed here too! What do you have in mind for him to do?
I don't have a clear idea yet. Things would depend on him and his vision for what we could do. I have one tat on my leg that needs to be covered up, so I'd probably ask him to look at that one and then we'd go from there! I honestly would be excited with just about anything (nothing dark/disturbing, not my style) that he'd want to do. A guy this talented you just bounce ideas with. Everything with him is original and custom.
Rance has lots of work he wants done, lots more than me.
Ok, so I still haven't received a return email yet. I think I'm gonna call. I'm dying here!
I've convinced my long-time best buddy that he may not get this opportunity very often, so he, Dad, Mom, and I are going down to New Zealand to visit my brothers and loads of other family over Christmas-time for a month. By then I wouldn't have seen one of my brothers for a whole year and the other for two years.
December is going to be fucking gooood. Also a pleasant respite from Minnesotan wintertime.
So, I joined the military in 05 and wasn't able to hit up even a small festival. Bonnaroo was my first festival since that time and I've already boughten my tixs for Hulaween and Bear's Creek. I'm one happy dude! I doubt I woulda heard about the 2 other festivals without this site, y'all rock =)

YES! YES! YES! I just successfully pre-ordered 3 copies of this!!!!!
easymorningrebelartifactatticLoveLuckLaughterbansheebeat OMG YOU GUYZ! Nuu Negativland! Had it not been for these dudes playing Boomslang and Whoreshack cluing me in then graciously offering me a place to crash at his house, it's likely I'd have never met y'all and a number of other awesome people in Lexington!
The first copy I'm not even going to open the box it was shipped in. The second copy I'll take out of the box but I'm not going open the packaging. The third copy will have my greazy fawning fingerprints all over it and will get played ad infinitum!!!
EDIT: OK OK. So the pre-orders of this CD, the packaging is made from re-purposed bibles. So What I'm buying is a Bible that's been re-purposed into a double CD case made by hand (by the band members themselves!!!!!!). It's a work of art (as is everything Negativland!) well worth the $15 price tag. These are limited edition and only so many will be made. They will eventually run out of Bibles and patients.

We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
