honestly the medicine singers with Lee Ranaldo was a great show last year so whatever, im fine thats back as the "local" act or whatever
but lol at Saturday.
New Dangerfield is a pretty cool act that’s also lost in this announcement. Some familiar names in that project including Kaia Kater and Jake Blount.
But like people have been saying “wait until the big artists get announced” and I think since then we’ve only gotten War on Drugs and Joan Baez Reading Poetry as acts I’d classify as “big.” There’s a pretty big step down from that to Cory Wong and the Breeders (which are good middle of the day fodder). And then another big step down from those acts to most of the other recent announcements.

Upcoming Shows: June 20: Lana Del Rey July 19: Noah Kahan/Mt. Joy July 26: Newport Folk Festival August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
Sooo funny that the last announced Saturday act is the local opener lol. Very curious about the last 3 acts announced. Being that one of them won’t be a headliner
Could we get 19 acts per day now with maybe the local openers starting closer to gate open on the Fort Stage? Or do we still think Saturday is unique with Joan Baez poetry.
Number One Babe has as many Spotify listeners as my friend’s band who occasionally plays their small town roadside bars.

I was thinking 19 per day but who knows.
They took away the “more to come” tile. It’s 18.
When they did unannounced they left the tile there in years past.

I mean looking at the schedule from last year, I guess War on Drugs fills the MMJ headliner spot? Gillian & Dave closing the Quad, Elle King subbing a la Maggie Rogers?

There are already 19 on Saturday even without the tile. We just all thought the 19th was going to be a headliner or subheadliner and instead we got an opener… 😂

That puts Elle King in a much more prominent lineup position than Maren Morris at the peak of popularity of Maren Morris’s career.
Even if you justify those spots, it’s a pretty big drop off after that with like Joan Baez reading poetry, Killer Mike, Orville Peck, and Rhiannon Giddens in the next tier of artists.
I miss the days of Sylvan Esso, The Roots, Brandi Carlile (and Joni Mitchell!) AND Maren Morris and Japanese Breakfast. (Even without Joni that day schedule blows this Saturday out of the water).

oh i dont think its justified at all, i think this lineup is extremely mid
I guess that Baez thing could very well be her doing poetry between songs during a headliner spot, or before a set unknown. Who the hell knows.
I really think it's something like this. It says "special poetry readings", plural. Guessing that either she's doing these in the museum, or as interstitials between/before acts on one (or more) of the stages.

I still feel like there needs to be more consistency in the lineup rollout. Leaving 1 week without any announcements, and probably announcing the headliner then two small acts for Saturday was a weird move. Sunday only caught up this week to the point where it’s on par with the other 2 days. There was over a month of small announcements before Dropkick Murphys.
Anyway, I missed the Medicine Singers last year due to merch 🙄but heard good things from my husband. I love what I’ve heard from New Dangerfield so far…any idea where they’re from, given they’re “local”?

They’re from New Orleans.

But I believe one of the band members is from Providence.

I think Jake Blount is a graduate student at Brown. He played a solo show at URI in February 2023 which was excellent.

From his website: “ . As of fall 2023, Blount is a Ph.D. student in Musicology & Ethnomusicology at Brown University.” You’re right.
Rhiannon Giddens discussing the current generation of black banjo players in spring 2023: “And there’s tons of young people now. I mean, there’s the Black Banjo Reclamation Project that’s out in California. There’s Jake Blount, who’s doing amazing things with the music. There’s Amythyst Kiah. I mean, Valerie June’s more my age, but she also plays the banjo. … You see these people coming into their own. There isn’t another Black string band, and that makes me sad. I’m not sure when that’ll happen again. … But there’s Tray Wellington, a Black bluegrass player who just released “Black Banjo.” It is exciting to see Alison Russell, who plays banjo, who’s a shooting star and playing with all sorts of people. So the image of Black people playing the banjo is becoming more and more out there now. For me, the important thing is that people realize that’s not folks sort of adopting a tradition that’s not their own. It’s people rediscovering a tradition that was always theirs as well.”

As in a duet? Or are they announcing two artists today? A duet would be interesting and Andrew Bird being present gives us another Fiona Apple connection... but Madison Cunningham's set was one of the more disappointing sets I've seen at Newport. It wasn't really her fault though to be fair but playing a slow, toned-down set in between Jupiter & Okwess and Remi Wolf didn't work for me.

Looks like pre-Newport, Andrew Bird happens to be touring with Nickel Creek and they too are available on the weekend for another potential Fiona connection.
