For bands that I *really* like, sometimes I'll sneak my little mini-dv camcorder in and shoot video of the set. It's kinda tricky, because it's usually not allowed and some yellow shirts are real bastards about it. (I came very very close to getting completely kicked out of a radiohead gig at the hollywood bowl once) When I first started, I was really shaky and it was almost unwatchable, but after a few times I've got my technique down pretty good and gotten some great shots. The key is to be nonchalant about it, not hold the camera right up to your face but off to your side, but still kinda keep one eye on the viewfinder. It also helps to be kinda tall. If you're too obvious about it, security will spot you and usually shine their flashlights right at you, or even sneak up behind you and grab you.
I'm planning to get a couple shots in at roo, definitely RH, and maybe beck and ben folds too... Anybody else gonna try videotaping? I know it's not allowed at roo, but anyone know how hard they crack down on this? Anybody remember seeing other videotapers there? or see anyone getting busted for it?
Yes, it is harder to really get into a show and dance around while you are taping, and it's hard to stay focused while youre altered, but I manage, and it's great being able to re-live the experience over and over on the big-screen at home.
I've managed to get some really great shots of some shows, including radiohead (several times), flaming lips, weezer, chemical brothers, arcade fire...
Another cool thing is trading my shots with other video bootleggers, so I have a pretty decent collection now (mostly RH)
Any of you inforoo folk into taping/trading?
and do you think I'm more likely to get busted by security at roo than your typical festie?
quick answer is I videotaped about 2 hours of music last year and had no problem at all. I even got some footage right in front of the stage. I walked around centeroo taping were i was clearly seen and had no problem. They didnt even notice my camera in my bag when i went in. I used a sony minidv camcorder so it wasnt that big but it was noticeable when i was taping. i dont think people realize how laid back bonnaroo is and how you can do anything you want. you can also look at the thread four pages down from this to see other replies. i think it is titled videotaping at bonnaroo.
You know, anymore with a good digital still camera, you can take some fairly decent video. If you just packed a couple extra memory cards you could probably get some good footage. Plus, it would look way more discrete since they look nothing like a camcorder.
