umm you will be on eof the few. but there are a few fromt the over 40 crowd. there are lots of teenagers and lots of 20 somethings.... i think this year the lineup will draw more of the kiddies that like indie and hip hop and lest of the 20 something and overs that like dylan, the dead, tey , sci, wsp, etc.. but you sound like you are coming with a group so it shouldnt be an issue... dont expect any quiet time in the campgrounds but you should have a great time... my dad is thinking about coming with a couple of his friends. he was all about it but this surprise lineup has kinda squashed his excitement and willingness to shell out that much money for this lineup

I will be 36 by the time roo rolls around. 2 people from my group will be 40. Also have several friends that plan on going that fall into the older bracket. Just pop an extra geritol every morning and cover your bald spot so it doesn't get fried and you will be fine ol'timer.

Hey Dagbeast -- you'll be just fine. You and your friends certainly won't be alone. There's a fairly large percentage of "older" ( ) folks every year.

For the record, the indie population is mostly made up of 20 somethings. Kiddies like stupid!hip-hop (read: 50 Cent, Lil' Jon, and etc.) and silly pop-punk bands under the 'emo' moniker (read: MCR, Fall Out Boy, etc.)

not trying to start anything... imo the lineup this year will draw an overall younger crowd then years past.... i didnt say that all indie or hip hop fans are kiddies just that a line up heavier in those areas draws a younger crowd then the allman bros, bob dylan, trey , sci, etc...

mind you, there are still some kids in the world that like dyla, the dead, trey, widespread, etc.

My father is going with my crew this year. It's a birthday present, and after all, Roo is on Father's Day weekend. He's 52 years old, but that guy's gonna have a great time. It's kinda funny though...while I'm going nuts about Radiohead and Oysterhead, he's all pumped about Tom Petty, Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Douglas. There's definitely something for everyone.

ya i know man. just like i didnt meant that all hip hop and inide fans are kiddies i also didnt mean to imply that all dylan and jam fans are old either. just a fact about the bulk of the fans from those groups. my son dosent like dylan, unless someone else is playing his songs. but he loves the dead and trey, north mississippi allstars and tons of great music and hes 10. he is really into quiet riot and the beastieboys too. he found out those were th first two tapes i bought with my allowance when i was a kid so he did the same and he loves both of them. so i know that age has little to do with it. just looking at who is likely to be drawn to a roo type event with this years lineup compared to years past. but i could be wrong. i know lots of 30 and olders that love bonnie raitt, elvis costello, tom petty, phil lesh,etc... so maybe it wont be less then years past
Considering that Radiohead didn't even make themselves known in the States until 1992, I'd say the majority of their fanbase is much older than people are giving them credit for (I haven't seen many kiddies listening to Hail to the Thief).
And actually, looking at even what people say is the "non-jam" part of the lineup, it's mostly late 80's and 90's veterans like G. Love, Blues Traveller, Ben Folds, Sonic Youth, Beck, Radiohead, Cypress Hill and others... Death Cab and Bright Eyes certainly are newer in comparison, but still have a twentysomething following. Then when you look at the wide range of other acts from Costello to Raitt to Lesh and on... you actually get an even older demographic.
Roo is very, very diverse in terms of age. I have heard that VIP and the RV section skews older, but that's to be assumed given disposable income.
I turned 50 last week (and Happy Birthday, Lockaroo, karma for you...).
This will be my first Bonnaroo - I'm taking my son as a HS graduation present. He knows we're going on a trip but I haven't told him where. And, yes, we're doing VIP (a perk of age, I guess).
I'm looking forward to most all of the lineup, not just the oldies. Yes, I've listened to Elvis Costello since his first LP (which got lost in the great LP meltdown of 1989). My dad dated Bonnie Raitt's soon-to-be-stepmother (at the time Bonnie was 20 and the stepmother was 21. My dad was 43). I saw Phil with the GD first at Winterland in 74 and most recently with my son at the Dead's New Year's Eve 2003.
I saw a lot of people my age this year at Mars Volta and Green Day. And so on. Radiohead, Sonic Youth, Dungen, My Morning Jacket, Stephen Malkmus are music my son's introduced me to and I'm looking forward to at Bonnaroo. Now I'm listening to the Bonnaroo bands I've never heard and so far I'll be there for all of them. I'm as happy for the hip-hop and indy as I am for the jams, jazz and blues.
Happy B-day man... I turn 30 this year and thanks to my parents my musical tastes are all over the place. I'm doing VIP too- very excited for that- but only because of a nicer tax return than expected. I'm excited to take my daughter someday, and your plan with your son is incredible... kudos to you.
I'm sixteen, this is my first roo. I'd be proof of keith's theory, except I'm going for Trey and Phil, and never heard My Morniong Jacket (granted, I like Death Cab for Cutie).
However, my dad's thinking of going next year and he's 53.

i think its great that younger people go to roo. i never meant to imply that young people shouldnt go. i would have liked to have kept it to the phil and trey liking kind as opposed to the mtv youngsters brought in by bright eyes, death cab, matisyahu, common, etc... is all i am saying. enjoy man... roo was a life altering experience for me and i wish it had been around when i was in highschool.

This is my 3rd roo and I am going to be 40 in may....I never felt an age thing here, everyone is so friendly, plus I have seen some pretty old looking people there too some over 60...so age is not an issue....
Definitely people of all ages. I met an older couple last year. They were in their late 50's and were just driving down the east coast from Maine and happened to hear about 'Roo when they go down south and decided to go. I thought it was real cool that an older couple just did a spur of the moment thing like attend bonnaroo while on an RV vacation.

I'm 46 - this will be my 4th Roo - wouldn't miss it. You will be in the minority age wise but who cares. We've taken a liking to the KOA set up - showers; pool hot tub and flush crappers no security check into Centeroo PLUS great access to the venue- last year we recieved staff wristbands which provided ALL access. The first year the KOA armbands were the same color as the press passes.
This is our first roo and we can't wait! I am 45, my husband is 50, and the people traveling with us are 50 and 52. We love all kinds of music and people! I'm sure us "young folks" will fit in just fine!
I'm 35 and my friend will be 32. Last year I felt a little old for the crowd, but I didn't mind. One thing I noticed is the pushers/wooks didn't try to sell me any drugs - I guess they thought I was a narc.

This is also my husband and I's first roo. I am 42 and he is 36 and our three friends that are coming with us are in their mid 40'sand this will be their 2nd roo. We go to the Mag and Spring fests in Suwannee every year and we just bought a big RV so we will be camping in comfort this year. Sometimes being older has it's perks when it comes to these things.
When we started going to shows we were in a tiny tent and we got washed out, lightning, tents blowing away and all the other fun that comes with it. Porta potties have never held any charm for me and I had 2 car accidents 5 years back that didn't add to the allure of sleeping on the ground.
As the years progress and the disposable income increased, we are now enjoying shows much more and think that is the great thing about these fests. You get every age, demographic, taste in music, and we feel it is almost as enjoyable listening to the music as it is to watch the people surrounding you. I have friends flying in and some of them just turned 21 but they have good taste in music and don't act stupid so I am sure I will be hanging with them from time to time too. I love that I get to listen to every kind of music there is in one weekend and I am hoping to come back with one or two new favorite bands...If that happens, I will be one HAPPY woman
It's about the non-gap and what that's all about. Read into it why 40 year olds at Bonnaroo aren't just posing young.
Or as the article concludes: "It’s also about rejecting a hand-me-down model of adulthood that asks, or even necessitates, that you let go of everything you ever felt passionate about. It’s about reimagining adulthood as a period defined by promise, rather than compromise."
