I am wondering how long are the set of bands from other festivals such as Wakaursa, Langerado, 1,000 Lakes and others. I see many ppl going to the other festival because of the whole jam band issue, but as far as I know, these festivals don't have sets as long as Bonnaroo does.
The sets at 10K Lakes Festival are actually longer than a lot of Bonnaroo sets. The shortest sets there are an hour and a half where as the shortest at 'roo is an hour. They just took the 2005 site down which is where I saw the set lengths earlier. I think the headlining sets are the same as 'roo with the latenights being maybe a little shorter at 10K Lakes. This is probably where I'm heading this summer. Umphrey's is confirmed and they will most likely get a latenight set. Less bands which is probably why they can have a few longer sets. A few bands actually get to play two days sometimes also. I found a review from last year that provides a lot of info about the festival.
Well, the smaller bands play an hour, but once mid afternoon hits there are alot of hour and a half sets. I think the hour and a halfs out number the hour sets. That cool that there is a festival that plays long sets..i just haven't seen many.
Yeah theres really very few hour sets at 'roo and it's usually smaller bands. This year I'm just looking for the more kick back and relax at camp without missing a ton of music. I finally just felt overwhelmed by the size of 'roo last year. Still had an amazing time, I just think it will be cool to be at a place this summer where there will be room to play frisbee and what not.
Speaking of other festivals, I think the Telluride Bluegrass Festival made a dire mistake in setting their dates the same weekend as Bonnaroo. I really wanted to go to Telluride this year but I can't because it is the same dates as Bonnaroo and Bonnaroo easily wins out. I do not know too many people that would pick Telluride over Bonnaroo. Last year's festival schedule was perfect because Bonnaroo was the first big fest (excluding Langerado) and then shortly after that was Wakarusa, and then High Sierra, then Telluride, then All Good Fest, and 10K Lakes. It was all nicely coordinated.
That happened the first year of Bonnaroo. I know Yonder Mountain was invited to play the first 'Roo but turned it down to play Telluride instead. I was thinking maybe not so many bluegrass bands would be at Bonnaroo this year because they might choose to play a true bluegrass festival instead but Bela Fleck is gonna be at 'Roo and he is always at Telluride. Who knows though, maybe he'll play Friday at 'Roo and then like Sunday at Telluride.
I think Telluride is always the same weekend in June and its Bonnaroo that jumps around the month from year to year. Nickle Creek and Jerry Douglas are also doing the Roo and Telluride thing this year.
For anybody thats interested 10K lakes just released it's initial artist list. Looks so good right now. I only remember a few right now but theres more to be announced. So far:
-Trey -Trey and Mike Gordon -The Duo w/ Mike Gordon -String Cheese Incident -Keller Williams -Keller Williams Incident (keller with String cheese as his backing band) -Tea Leaf Green -Umphrey's McGee -Trampled by Turtles -Medeski, Martin and Wood -Wood Brothers -Hot Buttered Rum String Band -Big Head Todd and the Monsters -Wookie Foot -The Big Wu -Backyard Tire Fire
I don't know if they would give MMW another latenight slot at 'roo. They had the tent groovin for 4 hours in '03. Then again they did let Galactic,STS9, and now Umphrey's repeat latenight slots so there is a chance of it happening.

" I really wanted to go to Telluride this year but I can't because it is the same dates as Bonnaroo and Bonnaroo easily wins out. I do not know too many people that would pick Telluride over Bonnaroo."
Anyone going for bluegrass and acoustic music would obviously choose tellrude...

yeah but NIN and HIM headlining. I personally wouldnt want to go to any festival with those headliners. I like the roo much better. Bonnaroo should remain a feel good laid back jam kinda fest. Other music styles should be represented but I enjoy the indentity bonnaroo has created. I love the decemberists but I don't want to see that show at bonnaroo.
It sounds cool, but the gorge isn't what it used to be for camping and festivals. The camping isn't as open and fun as it used to be, and I can guarantee that it won't have as cool things going on besides the music. The gorge has gotten a lot stricter in recent years.

The issue is that there arent nearly as many jambands on this years llineup as there has been in the past. Some say its just Bonnaroo diversifying and others say its going commercial or abandoning its jam roots.
I personally agree with the fact that its not what it used to be but i dont see the whole selling out and commercialization thing, just wait for the additions, jambands will get to represent at Bonnaroo even if they may be drifting out of the majority. Besides theres plenty of other smaller fests to hit if roo' doesnt meet your needs, i feel it would be a shame if it slowly became a mainstream event over time though. I wasnt going to Bonnaroo untill the additions, and i've already thought about this possibly being my last year there...
I think it also has to do with the fact that the people at Superfly want to keep Bonnaroo as one of the largest , most well known festivals in the U.S. Newer festivals like Wakarusa can easily match what Bonnaroo has been doing in the past. By diversifying the acts they are keeping the festival unique and making sure it's not "just another jam festival". It's just not what everyone is looking for. Many Bonnaroo veterans, like myself, will be trying different festivals this year, while many people who never would have attended 'roo before will be giving it a try. I don't think it's a bad thing that they are moving away from the jam scene. There's not much to complain about with so much other stuff out there. Thats just my 2 cents.
sup yall.....been a long time......it's funny......i agree with umphreak, after seeing the lineup this year i decided to visit a new festival......(1) hugely crowded last year, (2) my jambands aren't going so i see now reason to be there, (3) omg the security has double every year at the roo......so im gonna sit this one out......i actually ended back at inforoo hoping to find some info about the 'all good festival' in wv......trying to decide between there or 10k lakes.......10k lakes would be more difficult for me due to distance and cash, especially if i can find some good feedback about 'all good'......help a brother out
so what do you mean by security being double every year?, are you talking about the gate check or is thier actually security there now? (like are they busting people inside the fest or what?) I was at the first two roo's and am planing to make a return this year. And although id love for them too add some more jambands (greyboy!), i probably will try and catch quite a few of the non-jam acts. I keep hearing that the atmospere there is dead and all, was it like not everyone there is going to see the same bands and stuff, or were there actuall "problematic events" going on?
either way i plan to be there as i already got tickets, and ill just have to make the best of it, whatever
Yeah, I did notice there weren't as many jam bands this year. However, living in Mexico and all there's no way I could go to more than one festival. I still picked Bonnaroo, because even though I'm hoping they add some more jam bands (SCI, Trey, DMB, Gov't Mule), 'roo is still the best organized and, I think, the one with the biggest bands. I mean, you don't see Tom Petty or Beck at Wakarusa. But they've got Buckethead. In other words, even though other festivals have some cooler acts, Bonnaroo still offers the best and the biggest, and the most. This might mean going commercial for people who go to festivals all the time, but people who might only go to one festival a year do appreciate the variety and the desire to bring bigger (in terms of fans, I mean) bands. Which is not to say I'd like to see Marylin Manson next year, or that I wouldn't give up Radiohead to see Buckethead or DMB.
I've been in 03 and went last year, and I may be in the minority, but I really didn't notice much of a difference in the security. I can't imagine they'd try to make things stricter. If it ain't broke...

I've only been to last years roo, but i dont know what this is about the atmosphere being dead. I personally thought it was awesome, i attend many smaller and local fests, and the feeling was the same at roo, personal and chill, but larger. I think thats a pretty good feat, and i dont know how it could really get much better.
as for security last year......now was i the only person who felt annoyed by the constant glare of city cops and state troopers all the way to the gates last year......now in 2004 this didn't happen, but last year while winding the last 10 or 15 miles into the camp grounds they were freakin everywhere......and it appeared that if you looked like a car full of hippies you had the highest risk for 'just conducting some randoms'......on thursday.......i dont know about the other days......gate car checks were pretty lax......
and for gate checks going into centeroo......i spent 2 hours on saturday afternoon waiting......hell the crowd was hollering, 'cmon man'....'hurry up, this is bonnaroo, what the hell'.....and they were checking people pretty well during the day......now late night was usually unmaned but hell you miss a lot of good shows if you wait that late......case in point, just to see how tight they were i went in with a pouch of water......when told i had to pour it out, i gave them the same story i use at football games......i have seizures and have to stay hydrated, which was a concern given i had just spent hours in a line waiting to get in, and offered to pour any amount they wished into a container to check it......no dice.....and when i expressed frustration i was pulled aside and thoroughly frisked by another security person......of course i had nothing and was allowed to continue on in with an apology for the inconvenience.......
now it seems like im the only one here that noticed these occurances......that's fine......but i assure you that 2004 was not as tight......and since im a researcher, yes i run my own small scale tests and frequency counts on undesirable events......i always seem to when there are a lot of bright shirts walking around just to get a perspective of is it show or for real and last year the conclusion = they were looking but not combing.....my .02

I went in '04 and '05 as well, but I did not notice a big difference in security. We didn't go in until Friday morning, so I can't speak about the cops in line on Thursday (and I don't doubt that there were more cops around on Thursday; I'm sure after the deaths in '04 (regardless of cause) they felt like they needed to have more of a visible presence -- they were also talking about increases in security on the news Thursday), but on Friday, there were no cops at all going in. The folks at the gate barely even looked at us, much less searched the car. (Granted, neither of us looks hippie-like at all, and the car is just a plain car with no stickers or anything -- not that it's right, but I think if we had a car full of hippies, we would be expecting to be searched.)
As for the gate checks, there was one time when we waited 15-25 minutes to get through the gate, but I don't think they were checking people during that time; they were just waiting to let people go through for some reason. Other than that, we never had a problem getting into Centeroo. It always took about the same amount of time, and we felt like we got the same amount of attention as we were checked out.
With the thing about bringing in the pouch of water, I don't want to be argumentative, but wasn't that kind of asking for a problem? I mean, your explanation was understandable, but they are just going to say that you can get water in Centeroo (and technically, while I wouldn't go near one, there are even water fountains, so you don't actually have to pay for it).
I can't say that I was looking for differences, so I'm sure there were some things I didn't notice, but my overall experience was basically similar between the two years.
This will be my fourth Bonnaroo and I didn't notice any extra security last year either. I arrived on Thursday morning and there didn't seem to be any more cops than 03 or 04 and they didn't even look in our car at the gate last year as opposed to the 2 years prior. As for walking into the festival, I brought water into Centeroo problem free each time and the girl with me never had her backpack searched except for them looking in the top when she opened it.
As for atmosphere, I think Ziggy is right, it still feels like a small festival feeling even though it is huge. In fact, I enjoyed last year alot more than 04, although 2003 is still my favorite. I guess the festival is just what you make it, though, so if you are looking for flaws, I guess they are easier to find.
