say i want to be front and center for a show. do i come super early and hang around the stage for a while, or is impossible to do? will there be other shows on the headlining stages before the headline acts?
Truth be told, it doesn't really matter when you show up. It's pretty easy to work your way up close. I found everybody to be pretty accommodating. Though, I usually hung towards the back when the headliners came on. I was pretty beat by that point so I sat on the grass and soaked it all in.
If I don't get there early, I usually forget about getting up close to the stage. It's just not cool to push my way forward, being all of 6'7. I can see fine from the back, anyway.
But as far as Radiohead goes, I'm getting there two hours early. I intend to be in the thick of things for their show.
Yeah, we will be getting to Beck as early as possible. Usually, you can get to a tent show maybe a 1/2 hour early and be anywhere you want, but the bigger shows you'll probably want to get to earlier if you really want to stake your claim on a spot.
Im usually not too worried about trying to get too close to the stage. I like being able to chill a little ways back. I guess its years of seeing shows on lawns that makes me appriciate that

amen man. i am thinking the same damn thing. it is so worth it to me to just fuckin chill out right in front of the stage. an hell, there will be plenty to do. it will be getting dark, and that is the most perfect time of the day to just hangout. i am so fucking excited. i have been waiting for this day for years. since 2003 when i got tickets to see them in atlanta on october 6th and i couldn't go cause the god damn police department revoked my liscence for 3 weeks because i sped. bastards.

Last year, my brother and I climbed onto the front rail on the right side of the main stage when the Black Crowes finished and moved along everytime someon left. By the time DMB came out, we were just past the corner of the stage and by the end of the show we were pretty much in front of Dave.
Just find an open space and step forward when there is room. Bonnaroo is a bit of a buffet, so folks come and go throughout sets (even the headliners).
... and no matter what the squirrel tells you, most people do mind when you shove your way to the front. They're just cool enough not to tell you what an asshole you are being.

For Saul Williams/Mars Volta last year my friends and I waited at the front railing for a couple hours to be right up front for them.
And during Modest Mouse an obnoxious guy flailed his way in front of me. Normally I dont mind people moving ahead but I was close and it was already crowded...and this guy wasnt too cool and just kept 'dancing' like a fool where there was no space for it. My elbow accidentally bumped his ribs very hard. A few times.
I so wish I had gotten up close for The Mars Volta; Cedric and Omar are so energetic on stage. I didn't realize what I had missed until months after the show when I saw recordings of some of their other concerts.
I want to get there for a good spot at Radiohead as well. I remember my 05 Roo neighbor telling me about how he planned on getting to What Stage for Toots and staying there all day so they could have a good spot for Panic's set.
Plan on getting to the tents hours early for a good spot for a latenight set. I know people that got to the tent 2 and a half hours early to get up front for Umphrey's latenight in '04.

I got to the tent mars volta was playing in a 1/2 hour before saul, and i was only where the guy spazed, which was about 1/4 way back in the tent. It wasnt right up there, but i could still see everything, which was nice. So id get there atleast an hr early for a good spot.
I went to the secret machines show 45 minutes early cause I knew how awesome they were, had any seat in the house. Until some jackass came half way in the set, weazeled his way in front of me and started jumping around like an idiot constantly bumping me. If it wasnt for the show there probally would have been more than a couple elbows thrown his way. Dont be a dick, if there is someone you want to see plan to be there an hour prior and relax, let your mind take you on a nice little trip. Roo06 cant wait.
ok thanks for all the info everyone - a tremendous help.... i don't mind hanging out for a couple of hours at all. i def don't want to be pushing folks out of the way, as i wouldn't want them pushing on me either! Here's to 'roo!
