I've seen talk of MMJ and Umphrey's McBisco everywhere, but nobody referencing the hip hop performance. I actually would have loved to have been able to see MMJ, but had to give Common the one up in this situation.
I wasn't interested in Petty so I got to the tent at about 10 and camped out there. Ended up 2nd row and center, and absolutely loved Common and Blackalicious. Lyrics Born was a bit of an egomaniac who played the crowd too much, but I suppose he could have been worse. Either way, Common had an awesome performance, and it seems like no matter which late night set you chose on Friday, you couldn't have gone wrong!
I was in the mix for Lyrics Born and Blackalicious and watched a few Common songs from outside the tent.
Lyrics Born was by far my favorite. He's just one of my favorite performers, and for my money the crowd participation is what makes a good hip-hop show.
Common sounded great and looked like he had the tent going too. I'm just not too fond of his lyrics, style etc. so I don't get into it as much.
My expectations were low for Blackalicious. Gift of Gab is probably my favorite studio MC, but I've been dissappointed the two times I've seen him live. Unlike LB, his diversity of styles and personality does not translate live very well imo. That said, I was really presently surprised and enjoyed the part of the set I saw. It was sweet that he was still going at 4am due to the delay before Common (which was beautiful for me as it extended my MMJ time).
Like last year, the Late night hip-hop was a resounding success. Friday Late Night in general was simply amazing. I could have spent all night in any one of those tents.
Yeah, that delay before Common was a killer. It was supposed to be a 15 minute break between the two, and it ended up being an hour. The break between Common and Blackalicious was a good half hour as well.

I spread out my time really well considering I wanted to be everywhere at once 12-2 Umphrey's 2-3:10 My Morning Jacket 3:10-4 Disco Biscuits (pleasantly surprised me. I was tripping out to them relaxing on the grass)
