This is the first year where I can see all the artists I would see at a JAzz Festival like Dr John, Bill Frisell, the neivelle bros, mmw, buddy guy, having scofield and that sax player with phil, ect....
this is hte kind of music i am into right now, but i get to experience it with the bonnaroo atmosphere, which is absolutly amazing.
How do other people feel about this, who are less into the typical "jam" bands even though i hate using that word) and into more blues and jazz....

i have seen MMW and Buddy Guy before. i expect both to be GREAT! Dr. John, Bill Frissel, and SCO should all be good. hopefully there will be little jazz swing somewhere.
I think its a long time coming. I've always been surprised that there wasn't more of a jazz representation, and its really the Preservation Hall tent that I think will change that this year. I've picked up a Preservation Hall CD, and I can tell you that the PH tent will be filled with good old fashioned New Orleans jazz all weekend. For me, its something Bonnaroo has really been missing and will be the perfect fit.
Just poked around a bit about Frissell's lineup and think I'll start a thread about it....
I'll always remember The Bad Plus' BLISTERING set at Roo 04. After every song EVERY SINGLE person i the tent went BERSERK with applause and adulation. The band was obviously hugely appreciative if this. The vibe was kickin' and the pumped. JAZZ WAS ALIVE AT BONNAROO!
It's about time some more jazz representation showed up there. I'm so pumped for the Preservation Hall Jazz Tent where they'll be "cookin' up some hot New Orleans jazz"!

Jtr,
I have to agree. That set was a blast, and the vibe was outstanding. The Bad Plus are ridiculously talented. Wish they had brought them back this year.
The sax player I was thinking of is greg osby, he has recored with Jason Moran. I have never seen phil and friends, but with osby and scofield. How jazzy/funky do you guys think phil will be?
I have read that Dr. John and Buddy Guy have done some work together in the past and I wouldnt be suprised to see them do a lil something together at roo. I would also like to see mediski, frisell, or dr john play with phil.
What do you think are the chances that Scofield re-unites with MMW?? that would be sick.
I never really thought they skimped on the jazz at 'roo in the past, but maybe I'm wrong. I've gotten to see so many good jazz shows at 'Roo. Garage a Trois was my favorite show of '03 and Josh Redman really impressed me that year too. Actually MMW killed their latenight set that year too and Galactic rocked an awesome parade set with Charlie Hunter. I guess '03 was a good year for jazz, maybe not so much in '04 and '05.
'04 was all right...Jazz Mandolin Project, The Bad Plus, Soulive, Galactic, and MMW. I've been waiting for three years to see Bill Frissell on the line up...its just too bad Elvin Jones isn't still alive to be a part of the ensemble.
Actually, Scofield and MMW have recorded a new album together, it's on the MMW site
i am really excited about them putting out an album together. cant wait for fall. i also though the childrens album is an awesome idea. here a copy of the part that talks about it
Yes, Billy did announce recently "Everybody Poops" as the title to one of the band's new tunes. The guys are making a Children's Record! They have songs about dirty socks, airplanes, trains... nursery rhymes over crazy beats. Stay tuned, this one is going to be good.
What bothers me is the term "jam" band, because all jazz is, is just jamming if u think about it. SO really, jazz bands are the real "jam" bands. but i digres, i just really dont like the name "jam" band, i dont know what other people feel about that.
