What bands have you only started listening to since the lineup has come out? There are a few bands that I was slightly familiar with, but never really paid much attention.
My favorite "unknown to me" band this year has been Son Volt. The Wood Brothers are great too. Last year it was Ray Lamontagne.

This year I have really got in Dungen. I had never heard of them before, now I love them. Electric Eel Shock, Andrew Bird and Devendra barnhert are the others that I liked and plan on getting their records.
This might sound kinda dumb but Radiohead too. I never really got into them at all and have given tham a shoot with the bonnaroo headliner slot given to them. Managed to get 3 albums of thiers out of the record store $3 bin. I like it, it's pretty good.

I'm w/ melikecheese. I've been totally stunned by all the live Radiohead stuff I've gotten since the announcement - not sure how they were totally flying under my musical radar until now. In any case, I'm COMPLETELY psyched about seeing that show.
Honorable Mention: Blackalicious, Tortured Soul, Brothers Past, Bill Frisell, Balkan Beat Box, Refugee All-Stars, & Electric Eel Shock.

i usually wait until after the schedule's released. I know it's kind of weird, but i don't want to get into a band just to find out that my favorite band is playing at the same time they are.
this happened to me last year. I got really into M. Ward, but came to find out that the Kings of Leon were playing during his set and had to miss it. Still really into M. Ward though, and will probably end up checking out alot of the bands i missed.
After that the first that come to mind are: Devandra Banhart Refugee Allstars Amadou & Miriam Damian Marley CYHSY Magic Numbers Dungen Shooter Jennings

WOW, My sentiments excactly !! I mean word for word, I could have typed the veryy same post. I feel behind the curve a little bit, b/c before I researched my saturday nite headliner, I only knew Creep from the radio; almost 10 years ago! Or more?
Anyway, since Ive done my research, WOW! The only other band that chilled me like that upon discovery was Phish! I mean such amazing soundscapes, chilling vocals, Bonnaroo made me proud by booking Radiohead when I found out all the band was about!
I mean, National Anthem, Bishops Robes, Par. And., Karma Police, Everythings in its right place, How to Dissap., Egyptian Song, MY IRON LUNG! WOW!, Creep, Ideoteque, Morning Bell, Kid A, Talkshow Host, etc etc
Do you remember how you felt discovering those songs for the first time? now you know how I doin right now. I cant wait to let Radiohead melt my face at Bonnaroo!

ok, this may be like blasphemy for some of you people but... i just can't get into My Morning Jacket. they just dont do anything for me. AND... im not really into Radiohead either. i've tried. i like some of their stuff but just cant get that excited about them.
but i have recently "discovered" Blackalicious and Seu Jorge
the "not-so-obvious" artists that i am really looking forward to seeing: Bonnie Raitt, Dresden Dolls, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Steel Pulse, Damian Marley, Ricky Skaggs, Shooter Jennings, Bobby Bare Jr., World Party

Oh, and they will... they will...
but you raise a good point.. while not trying to be a boat rocker or anything, I''ve noticed this trend with non-Radiohead fans on Bonnaroo message boards.. some (not all, mind you) tend to think that Radiohead has this one sound that is what attracts so many fans, and that these fans arn't going to like Bonnaroo because it's not going to be their type of scene of music, which is just plain crazy.. if you listen to Pablo Honey, then Kid A , then Hail to the Thief, you hear 3 completely different sounding albums by the same band... there are not many bands I know that can radically change thier musical sylings from album to album and still retain the same loyal fanbase.
anyway, on topic, I've recently become a big fan of Devendra Banhart Band.. I can't wait to see them live.
also, I saw the Motet a long time ago at a smilefest, and I was floored. I can't wait to see 'em for the second time at the Roo!
I've never heard of Steel Pulse before now, but of what I've listened to, I like alot.
