This was '10, which was #5 for my brother and me. I was 50 at the time, and he was 48. It was also the first year we took my son (17) and his (15) with us. We were in VIP tent camping; first row past VIP RV. Had a decent camp. Two solo tents for the boys on either side of the EZ-Up, one five-man tent my bro and I shared on the backside of the EZ. Nice shade tarps over each tent, and a handy fold-up table out front we used for BBQ, and bar set-up. (The boys were involved in all BBQs, but knew better than to tempt the bar.) The taller, beige tent at the back left was our outdoor shower and "discretionary loo". The kid in the photo is my nephew, sitting proud under a Team USA soccer flag, but thumbing his iPhone to see whether the US/England World Cup match had started yet. He and I started walking in immediately after to watch it on Jumbotron, in that blazing hot field that used to be the Lunar Stage.
This young man may//may not be my nephew's cousin and my ex-wife's child, depending on how he'd prefer to address the photo. Just a few hours after railing for all of Deadmau5 show. Despite an E-Z Up overhead, he wasn't so easy up 'til around mid-afternoon. First 'Roo can do that to ya...
These guys didn't actually camp with us, but they were very cool, and we'd have been honored to make space for them. They taught me that there are great "Bros" in every crowd. Sometimes you just have to keep your eyes peeled for them.
So this year, we're in On-Site RV. It'll be great, because my brother and I are old and decrepit, and because our boys should be able to get better, longer sleep (on account of the whole air conditioning thing). For my own part, though, I'm gonna miss tent camping. I just like feeling "inside the maelstrom" like that.
the (first) camp photo, which stubbornly didn't upload
Nice set up! Was this in VIP?
Yes ma'am. Front corner of VIP lot, literally just across the road from ice trailer and general store. No more than fifty yards away from the arch. We really lucked out that year.

(Thanks for your compliment, btw...)

Thanks, Vike! I and I sad panda you didn't stop by, as we totally would've enjoyed meeting ya. This year, we're kickin' it in on-site RV, though....
this was our camp 2011.. worked pretty well, though we were a bit sardined in!
What kind of tarp is that? It looks like it blocks the sun very well!!!
It was the silver kind.. a 12x20.. we attached it to our ez-up and then to the top of our suburban, it worked wonders in keeping the tent cool, also left us the most room under our ez-up for lounging. We used dark green sheets on the other side walls, one to block the sun and let in airflow, but also to block our neighbors on that side who were not so nice ...
Sorry they all did not load.. grrr... boy, I miss my Roo Home! Cannot wait!!!
Sweet, shea! Loving the Japanese lanterns...
We purchased the lanterns at the Dollar Store, they added just enough light and ambiance at the camp at night. They ran on AAA batteries and actually last the rest of the summer at our permanent camp at home... Definitely getting more this year!
These set ups are amazing. Question, we're going to have two cars with roof racks, two tents and an ez up. Any advice on how we should set up tarps? Usually we only have one car so this is new territory.

Very Cool!! This will be my first time in VIP and am tring to figure out what is going to be different from GA Tent only, other than the porta pots!! ;D... I love your set up! I hope we can only be as lucky this year with the space you have! It is hard to remove from your brain that you will have more space and need less to be comfortable in VIP!!! Will you be doing ROO this year in VIP??

I believe Uncle Kev said he would be in RV GA this year, but the extra amount of space is a huge plus. This will be my sixth year in VIP and we always have had enough room for separate Car, tent, and 2 EZ-Up sitting area for 2 people.
Thanks again MLG, and Viking. This year we're in "on-site" RV, which is still in VIP -- just no tents to pitch. We basically just roll in with food, spirits, and a few changes of clothing. Also, the on-sites run off of electrical power rather than generators, and waste water is dealt with daily by festival staff. Sleeping in AC comfort is gonna be a huge plus. Myself, though.... I'll always be a tent camper at heart.
Like the Vike said, space has just never been an issue for us in tent VIP. We've always pitched at least two 2-man tents, a 5-man tent, two EZ Ups, and a shower tent/panic loo without encroaching on our neighbors. You're gonna love VIP.
To me, the greatest benefit of VIP is the obvious one. You're just soooooo much closer to Centeroo, that it keeps your campsite in play throughout the entire weekend. Our first two years, when we got stuck out in G.A. Super BFE and had a 30+ min hike each way to the music, we'd start shuffling in around noonish, and not go back 'til after the late-nights. Consequently, we'd end up dropping a crap-ton of cash on Centeroo food and beers. (Not to mention staying just dog- tired, from being two old dudes rucking those distances in apocalyptic heat....)
So we stepped up to VIP and got a great little Coleman propane grill for less than $30 at Wallyworld, and we've ended up cooking some awesome meals right at camp. (It helps if you can bring dry ice and keep a dedicated "meat locker" separate from the beer-and-Gatorade cooler....) One of my fondest Roo memories ever was nomming down a juicy 20 oz. New York strip and baked potato, then walking less than 100 yards into MMJ/Arcade Fire. And also bacon and eggs SUN morn, fresh off the griddle
For me, at least, the opportunity to take multiple showers throughout a VERY long day is key. It's not just going to bed clean, or washing off that brutal early-morning tent sweat. It's also maybe grabbing a quick shine after the What headliner, and before the late-nights. It just benefits my overall energy level immensely, and thereby, my enjoyment of the entire weekend.
Make use of the VIP tent, too. Regardless of how plush you guys pitch your camp, it's still always a challenge to sleep comfortably in a tent once the sun comes up. Grab a pillow and your cellphone, and you can duck in there for a bonus two-hour (air conditioned) snooze while your phone's re-upping. They always have baskets of free fresh fruit in there, which is gonna be good for your electrolytes and potassium levels.
I should end this tome before it crashes the server. Personally, I could still be coerced back into G.A. camping. But it would probably require a decent advance check from a major magazine, to document that whole experience.
Hope you guys cobble a great campsite this year, and have an epic Roo!

I so appreciate all the detailed messages on what makes a better more comfy roo! We are heading to Tent Only and we plan to be very comfortable, even if it takes a few trips to get it all over there. I've got three teenagers who are sworn to not complain and will be hauling most everything.
We have the 10X20 carport which they have set up and taken down twice now for practice. We have even hauled it around in the gorilla cart to see how the move will go. Inside is two tents, a couple folding tables, a battery operated shower pump with a couple 5 gallon bags, a couple recliners and a full size hammock with stand. I'm taking your advice and doing two coolers, a dry ice food cooler and a drink cooler. We bought the extra extended batteries for the cell phones and are making the flag. We cannot wait!!! Thanks again for all the advice!
I brought my tent along this year but didn't even set it up in favor of some improvisation:
Just your typical car wearing a cape. Nothing to see here, folks. Move along now.
No! Don't go in there. I beg of you, please don't peer behind the curtain.
You've successfully located the super secret mystery cave beneath the bumper of my mom's car. I slept here at night. Best Roo sleep I've ever had.
The mats kept the sun out so I woke up nice and cool in the morning. Water did drip on me all night and I couldn't maneuver much but I was so dead tired it didn't matter. If I go solo again I will probably do something similar to this and not even bother with a tent. Getting great sleep kept me energized all weekend.
"In the darkness hundreds of glowsticks streaked the air like tracer shots in war. Giant inflatables bounced over dozens of light sabers pointed skyward. Stuffed animals impaled on sticks danced above the hot crowds, puppeted by someone just given ecstasy by a friend made seconds before."
