I've read not to think about this, but I want to be able to contact my babies back at home or if, the Universe forbid, there were an emergency, their caregivers for the weekend could contact me. I use Verizon. Thoughts? Know of other ways to contact folks?

I know reception is good, its just the airways are very crowded i believe. Last year i had good service, but my calls wouldnt always go through, i just had to try a few times though, then id get through.
I've never had any problems getting through to people at home (I use Verizon too). They installed an extra tower a year or two ago to help with the extra cell traffic.
I use walkie-talkies to communicate with fellow 'Rooers.
I could only seem to get reception from outside of Centeroo last year....Another option is sending email/IMing from the internet tent if your cell isn't working.

I live in Illinois and I know that I had a heavy roaming charge on Verizon... Just some info for anyone interested... Save some change for extra charges in roaming...

You can roam on a nationwide plan though. Roaming charges also apply when only an analog signal exists (absence of a digital signal).
For instance I roam in my basement (clearly not out of my service area)
In my experience, going on ski trips and camping trips and crowded festivals and whatnot... Sprint customers always seem to have trouble, while us Cingular customers almost always have a strong signal. Verizon somewhere in between...
