hey, i'm staying in a hotel like 11 miles out and i'm really not sure what i'm doing at all...i dont want to miss too much action since i'm staying at a hotel, so does anybody have suggestions on what time i want to first get there? how to get in without too much excessive traffic etc?? thanks a lot.
ps sorry if this is a repeat, if so just let me know and where ot search down what i'm looking for, i couldnt find info anywhere i looked. thanks again
No offense, but you really are asking a hugely broad question that can only be answered very generally. There seems to be no consensus on a best time to arrive unless you are arriving way late on like Friday, when traffic will be thin.
The day parking will probably be a lot easier to manage than the entrances, but that's just a guess. I would advise the following, generally....
-- Get in as early as you can each day. You'll have a HIKE from day parking, the earlier you make it, the better. Find a shade tree to lay low under after, or cool out in the cinema tent for a while.
-- Especially if you are day parking, take a camel back.
-- Plan for some downtime. Find places you can rest and recharge, like with a nice fruit tea on the upper deck of the "rolling restaurant" in Centeroo.
Best advice of all? Camp, no matter what. You miss way way way too much of the 'roo experience if you choose to stay off-site.
My $.02. Good luck and I hope everything breaks your way on the parking and such...
I stayed at a hotel in 2002, and the day parking was actually pretty close to the main entrance--about a 10 minute walk. Last year I camped, and I understand that they moved the day parking, so I really can't be any help as to where they might do it this year.
They did a much better job managing traffic last year. Once the festival starts, traffic isn't much of an issue, so don't stress out about it too much. In 2002, it took me 5 hours to get from Nashville to my hotel on the first day of the festival, and I still didn't miss anything. "Go with the flow" is an overused cliche', but it served me very well in 2002.
You can have a remarkable time without camping--I certainly did. I felt much more refreshed in the morning (sleeping in air conditioning and taking long showers certainly helped) and was able to effectively plan for a long day at the festival. I was carrying a lot of stuff in my backpack, which I didn't mind too much. I was able to pack lots of water, snacks, sunscreen, squirt bottle, CDs to give to new friends, etc.
I didn't experience much traffic at all getting into day parking. Why? Because most people were camping and had already arrived. You might check with other people staying at the hotel as well as the hotel staff to see whether they have any shortcuts or special routes. Like Hootdaddy suggested, get there early--there is much to see, do, and experience besides the music.
Are you arriving Thursday or Friday? If you arrive Thursday, get lots of rest and be out there bright and early on Friday. If you're going to do the late night shows (which start after midnight), make sure you aren't getting baked in the sun all day long. The misting tents are your best friend! Use them to stay fresh through the afternoon.
Finally, make sure you do some walking around the camping areas! It's wild to see this town of 60,000+ pop up practically overnight. You don't have to camp to enjoy the experience out in "the neighborhoods."
