TLIKTB and Past Life are the only ones that stick out to me as not being good. Love/Paranoia and New Person have great lyrics
I just think he's a basic writer who writes about basic things from a basic perspective.
I disagree on New Person and would also add Yes I'm Changing (the worst offender) and Cause I'm A Man.
Not just a problem with Currents either imo, he just hides it better on the first two albums
I'd rarely say it's distractingly bad, but when his production/arrangement falls short to my ears, the songs just don't always have the legs to stand on
I personally think the lyrics on Lonerism are great. No, they aren't super in depth, but they suit the songs well and pack a lot of emotion. They just sound like the honest thoughts of someone with a lot of anxiety and introversion and dreams. They feel pure to me. Endors Toi and Apocalypse Dreams always get me.
Stuff like
"Nothing ever changes, no matter how long you do your hair It looks the same to everyone else Everything is changing, I guess I should warn my mom But she'll just be excited"
into the climax is perfect to me.
A lot of that feeling probably has to do with the melodies in conjunction with the lyrics. The vocal melodies on Lonerism are top notch.
Just finished listening to the new track. I need some more time with it but overall I think I like it, though I agree that his lyrics are distractingly basic. I just perused a smattering of lyrics from their previous albums, and I definitely see a step down after Innerspeaker. I thought Lonerism had better lyrics than it actually does (though there are some gems), but Currents and most everything since has been quite straightforward. It's part of why I didn't like their last album more than I do. They're still more interesting and well-produced than most bands out nowadays though, so I'll probably still return to The Slow Rush with some frequency even if it doesn't blow me away.

I don't even know what I want from Tame Impala anymore. Plenty of other bands cropped up in the first part of this decade to piggyback the trend of his early sound. Since that sound had been so overdone, I don't think I want him to revert to that. Because of this, Tame basically has an identity crisis with nothing to fall back on. I've always thought Currents was overrated and could have been better titled "Let It Happen & Co." I don't believe he will put out a great poppy album or dancy album that separates Tame Impala from the loads of other bands in that lane.
Let It Happen and (to a lesser extent) Eventually are the only two tracks I've been genuinely thrilled about from Kevin since 2012.
When Currents came out, he basically gutted Innerspeaker and Half Glass Full of Wine (live standout) from setlists. When Slow Rush comes out, I'll be worried that Lonerism will basically be down to It Feels Like We Only Go Backwards and Elephant with Innerspeaker fully gone. Maybe the new album will surprise me, but I'm envisioning a Bonnaroo 2020 setlist that I really won't care for.

One thing he needs to do is quit limiting himself to sub-1h30m sets. He needs to add 15 minutes, especially with a new album of songs. With his last run of shows he had more fun with the sets, switched around the order and added a second Innerspeaker track like Lucidity or Desire Be in place of Yes I'm Changing (his worst live song imo). I hope he carries that attitude over to the next tour. I'm just really hoping Apocalypse Dreams does not get cut. I don't think it will since he knows that is so many of his bigger fans' favorite, and it's a beast live.

Anyone who's been patiently waiting for the next My Morning Jacket album might want to check out "Better Than I Used To" by Illiterate Light. The duo just released their first full-length album October 11.
Singer/guitarist Jeff Gorman credits Jim James, Robin Pecknold, Wilco and Neil Young as influences.
New album from Whirr came out this past Oct. 29th...Premium shoegaze content here, lovely fuzz/lush sounds from the guitars, with the drums dialed in just right behind the wall of sound.
I'm usually a fan of Coldplay but this new album is doing nothing for me. Couple times thru and it's just not good at all. Oozing pretentiousness with underwhelming production. Just can't get into it.
