I've read part of this book and plan to read the entire thing eventually. Should I not watch the show if that is the case?
disregarding the very strange notion of reading a book and not finishing it in the first place...
the first season will probably cover the first couple hundred pages of the book, based on what I know. I think since you have begun the book, you should read the book fully, so you're not weaving between the two.

I've listened to the audiobook twice, the first time was last year, and then I listened to it again a couple weeks ago. I haven't been able to start the show yet because I am out of town for a few days, but I'm planning on getting a Starz subscription when I get home for the sole purpose of being able to watch this.
Muted it and stopped paying attention halfway through the episode (right around the bar fight). Made no sense to me, and was REALLY weird and all over the place.

Turns out my mom has Starz, so I went ahead and watched the first episode. Some of the effects were a little cheesy, but I kind of think that's part of trying to put Neil Gaiman's world onscreen (anybody ever try to watch Neverwhere?). I was surprised how closely it tracks the book. And I freaking love Ian McShane and Pablo Schreiber. They are perfect.

Technical Boy is way more terrifying in the TV show, IMO. Audrey is a much more well-rounded character, too.
I am kind of curious how they'll handle Agasu/Wututu story when it comes time, but given how they handled the "Coming to America" and "Somewhere in America" parts in the first episode (even with Bilquis's part way out of order, IIRC), I'm much more confident now than I was a week ago.
I understand tech boy will change appearance every time you see him, just like how often you update technology these days. And I'll be honest, Ian McShane is the only reason I started watching. He never disappoints.

Definitely agree about Technical Boy and Audrey. Incidentally, the woman who plays Audrey was on Nurse Jackie. Her voice sounds entirely different on this, which can be a difficult thing to believably pull off, but having now seen her in both things, I have no idea which, if either, is more like her real voice.
When I heard they were doing the show, one of the first questions I had was how they were going to pull off the Bilquis scene. I thought they did a pretty good job with it. I also wondered in general how many of the Coming to America stories would actually make it into the show. I kind of think it would be cool if they did like in this one and started each episode with one, but maybe that would make it too formulaic.

He was my favorite part of Deadwood by a long shot, and I love pretty much everything about Deadwood.
I've read the book multiple times and, after seeing the first episode, my hopes are high. The first Coming to America vignette was solid and they managed to avoid making the Bilquis scene look like a Troma film like I was afraid it would.
I get why they started with the Vikings since Wednesday ties in, but I really hope they do the Coming to America bit with the girl from Bantry Bay. Maybe before Sweeney's next appearance.
There's no way they're going to recreate the sheer number of "was that who I thought it was?" god cameos that the book had (which is insane enough to have entire websites dedicated to finding them all), but I'll be curious to see how many easter eggs they hide.
Have they cast Hinzelmann yet? Because I'm hoping they go back to the Deadwood well for Brad Dourif.

they haven't cast that far ahead yet, I don't think. Lakeside I'm pretty sure is quasi-confirmed for S2

Watching Ep.1 with no prior knowledge of the book or story and going into it with "oh, an Ian McShane show to watch" was the wrrroooonnnnggggg route to take.

I'm a long time fan of the book, read it around when it was released, and just reread last summer when I heard they were doing the show. Watched the first three episodes over the past two nights and am very pleased.
My wife, who isn't as obsessive as me and therefore hasn't done tons of research prior to watching the show, commented as soon as Ian McShane showed up on the screen, "Of course he's Wednesday!" Once you see it, there is no unseeing it, no other actor could have played him.
