I voted cool. Unfortunately, I'm banned from dancing in 43 states (including TN) so I have and will never partaken. It's a cool concept and fun to watch for a minute every year.
In high school (long, long ago) we used to have walkman (I told you) dances where everyone listened to whatever they wanted and danced to that. A similar concept but much more random to watch.

This sounds strangely fun and interesting. My school was just uncreative we had normal dances. I don't think I would've partaken in that either, but I would definitely people watch the fuck out that and try to guess what genre everyone was listening to.

I too voted cool, although I have never had the chance. I wanted to do it at bonnaroo several times, but it never happened. I feel like anytime that I have my headphones on while at home, I am dancing all over the place, which is sorta like the silent disco and I think that is cool. I also think it looks neat. No music and people dancing. I like it. I also wish that people would bust out in song and dance in real life, so I might be weird.
The concept is cool, but just like anything, if the music is shit, its not going to be any fun.
By the music, do you mean they are only enjoyable when an artist you have heard of is spinning there?
Or are they also fun when its a no name DJ but songs you like are playing?
I'd prefer its someone I know just because I know what I'm getting into, especially because there is usually a wait to get in from my experience, but either one is fine with me. Its just a lot harder (for me) to figure out if its going to be something I'd enjoy when its a no name djs.
I'll edit to say I've been in silent discos before listening to no name guys and still had fun, its just a bit of a gamble sometime.
they would be cool if they only played death grips
I would rarely leave.
Two years ago on Thursday the Miller Lite stage was playing meditative music while everyone was napping on the bean bags. But then all of the sudden they started playing nothing but Deafheaven. I was very pleased but everyone else was weirded out.
Pretty cool depending on the DJ. Last one I went to was Euphoria for a little while (missed Borahm Lee's guest appearance there) and then the one before was Quickie Mart at Bonnaroo 2015. Most of the time there are multiple channels linked to the headphones (red/blue or A/B toggle switch), so sometimes it's funny if you're listening to something really hard and bust a move but everyone else around you is just kind of chilling to the other channel and looking at you like WTF did he just do?
Last time I was at a silent disco some local artist pulled a mix from another artist on soundcloud and simply played it. 3-4x during his "set" the mix would mention the real DJs name and everyone would stop and boo him. It was awesome.
Had a buddy (wealthy) with a silent Disco at their wedding. It was a GENIUS idea. Younger people jamming to EDM/Rap/Radio stuff. Older people jamming to typical hokey pokey, electric slide, etc. It's pretty funny when half the dance floor is doing the cha cha slide and the other channel is hitting what I learned is called a "Milly Rock". Whatever that is.

I say cool. They are especially useful for carrying the party into the late night without disturbing the whole campground, like at Hula. I've only been to the one at Roo once and had fun salsa dancing to the Latin set in '09.
I spent way too much time thinking about this, but ultimately voted "cool", because generally silent discos are cool.
My caveat is that part of the appeal of dance music is the visceral experience of midbass, the "punch" you feel in your body. You lose that with headphones. Also, if an act is very popular you might not be able to experience it at all if all the headphones are claimed. At least at a stage you can stand at the fringes of the crowd and still hear.
But I've still had some great times in silent discos, and its a unique experience, so I had to go with cool.

I think this is a great idea actually. I don't know why him being wealthy made a difference. Couldn't you do this on the cheap?

I have no idea how many silent disco companies their are but I know he paid a pretty penny to have the company he used come with the set up. 400 people worth of silent disco headphones can't be cheap (400 people roughly so they probably brought 300-350 sets just in case). It was so much fun though.
