Why would they even bother with the "John would disapprove" part of it was Judas Priest? He wasn't the only apostle. He's not the only writer of the Gospels. It adds nothing, if the answer is Judas Priest.
The subject in part one of the clue is also plural.
"Hey, we need to pick a band for Roo Clue on Christmas"
"How about that local psychadelic rock band that won't be in the top 50? That will get people excited!"
It could be FJM, Judas Priest, or someone else but it's not All Them Witches that would be so lame.
FJM doesn't fit the clue to me. Why would John disapprove of himself(if the answer is FJM). What is the dark practice he preaches? The only part that fits is preacher = father.
Judas Priest and All Them Witches fit the clue. I think All them witches fits better. Witches preach about dark acts. They practice/recite witchcraft.

Good points that does take some away from Judas Priest.

Not sure. But Judas Priest took their name from the Dylan song "Frankie Lee and Judas Priest", which is from the John Wesley Harding album. Not sure how that ties in with disapproves.
I really want this to be Judas Priest but I have trouble seeing them in a tent sunce they play arenas and I can't imagine Roo giving them What or Which.
Could it possibly be Testament? They have no dates in June. With songs like Practice What You Preach and Souls of black, they could possibly fit the first bit. John is a book in the New Testament so he would probably disapprove of them being a Testament.
It's probably Priest. I'm just having trouble wrapping my mind around placement.
Same. Judas Priest seems too big for a tent, but would enough people be there for a late night on the Which Stage? I guess Alice Cooper and Billy Idol played a LN tent. Maybe Judas Priest would fit that category? Now I'm just wondering, when Bonnaroo books certain acts, do they already have in mind what slot they would play? Or do they sometimes just book things they think would be cool and figure it out later.
Anyways, I don't know much about em, but All Them Witches seems to make the most sense from what I'm reading so far. But Judas Priest could be like one of those unique bookings Bonnaroo does every year.
You would think they put some thought into it, especially for What and Which, although they have made grave mistakes in the past (Florence in a tent, EWF originally in a tent). If Priest is there, I've got to think it's a pure publicity thing for them. I can't imagine Roo paying them huge money, which they could get headlining any of the 6000 Euro metal fests or probably at least comparable money as a headliner at one of the metal-centric US fests like Rocklahoma (which is much smaller, but probably pays their headliner at least what upper-midcard Roo acts make). But hey, I want it to be Priest, so I want to believe.
Haven't the roo clues been progressively increasing in popularity (except the bonus clue) as they did last year? That doesnt support All Them Witches.
I'm not sure if they do or not honestly. I always thought they've been pretty random. I didn't think robert plant was the final clue last year but I could be wrong.
Edit: also i would imagine Judas Priest would have to be top 20 at lowest. And we have 4 clues after this one. 5 top 20 acts would seem like a lot for roo clues.

Wasn't one of the Roo Clues Shakey Graves last year?
I don't think so, but if it was I'm sure it was a picture of a gravestone with a song lyric on it, not a weird riddle with the name of the inventor of the cementary or something.

The Dark Act he preaches is his dark cynical music, John would disapprove could be a reference to the "Father John" part of the name, the whole disappointed father meme or whatever.
I just think it's much more likely that this is a poorly written Father John Misty clue than Judas Priest playing or a small local band being Clue #6 with only references to witchcraft.

it doesn't matter what the band actually is because people think it's Judas Priest and FJM anyway. And yeah a young, dope up and coming band would be so lame when they could book father John misty again who's been at every fest in America in the last three years including bonnaroo.

I can see Judas Priest being a late night Which set like Slayer was last year.

I thought they got moved to Which. Partially against Mumford?
nope. I can never remember which tent is which but it was either in this or that tent.
Ok. All I remember was I wanted to skip Mumford and see it but my group shot it down. And at that point I was pretty beat so decided to chill with them at Mumford and rest up for late night

Oh nothing against All Them Witches, but they generally don't pick small bands that no one would know for Roo clues, even less with obscure references to witches. It it was All Them Witches there would be reference to hats, brooms, cauldroms, etc. Oh and All Them Witches played Roo more recently than FJM

oh I'm sure it's probably FJM that's just not a super exciting booking.

Slayer played This Tent before Mumford. They were suppoesed to start towards the end of Mumford's set and lead into D'Angelo but their set got moved to an earlier time the week of Roo. Many tattooed hillbillies were upset.

I don't think preachers of a dark act is obscure at all to get to witchcraft. It's a pretty easy connection to a "dark religion". Whether that be witchcraft or satanic reference

Okay, but compare that to them just picking Jason Isbell song names for the clue. Why would a clue for a band that plays bars be this extensive?

To be honest I have no idea how big they are. Just know them from on here. They are doing a tour in Europe coming up soon. And are playing Nelsonville music festival as well. So it looks like they are getting bigger. When I first read the clue I thought All Them Witches or Lost Prophets. Couldn't tie John into lost prophets. I could all them witches. Then when I looked them up I saw they had a new song titled Dirt Prophet and it kinda locked me in on it.
To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if both FJM and All Them Witches play roo this year ... BUT, I don't think that this clue in particular is about either of them.
