Honestly, New England people should just save their money for all the quality standalone shows that are passing through in 2017 (e.g., Nick Cave at the Wang).
Haven't you heard? The lamestream festivalscene is focusing on the coveted 15-27 year old demographic.
They'll focus upon whatever makes money. If ticket sales were much lower than usual last May, expect them to try to appeal to more people through the broadest possible range of styles. Meaning, guitars will be back in a big way, alongside the dance pop, hip hop, EDM, and artists with celebrity status beyond music.

Since the cost of one early bird G.A. ticket is only $20 more than a loge seat at the Garden for your average two band arena show, I'll do all of the above.

But... "guitar music" is getting smaller crowds at festivals nationwide.

Genuinely hope you like the lineup.
Not hating on the festival nor its attendees who care for the music. But looking at the past 12 months of shows and notwithstanding the big draws, fewer festivalsets are making my year-end lists. Maybe I'm just getting jaded after a decade of being passionate about live shows, but the rampant corporatism and party-people crowds are killing the scene.
Have the crowds at Boston Calling always been bad? I don't remember reading comments about it in here?
A few people here have always complained about the crowds, but I never had a problem. Usual chattiness when you're further back, but I never experienced anyone who was rude or out of control. However, I don't think I have ever been more cramped at a show as I was for MMJ last year. roonectar and I were doing squats to try to retain an inch or two of space. I don't think it worked. #teamkegel
!!!!! Yes, so glad that I just wrote this post because I recently made a list of my MMJ shows and totally forgot about this one.
Waaaay late response, but I haven't logged on in a while. Thighs of steel after that crowd camp out. Worth it.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

For me, seven acts that fall somewhere on the spectrum between "really curious about" to "absolutely love" means that I'm getting my money's worth for the $140-ish I paid after service fees. (And if curiosity turns into fandom after seeing someone live, so much the better.)
As in, Alabama Shakes + Hozier + FIDLAR + Bully + Father John Misty + Sturgill Simpson + Stephen Malkmus = I got my money's worth
Of course, The Replacements + 21 acts reading the phone book = I got my money's worth, too.
Even though there aren't going to be as many stages as some of us had assumed, at least the new layout offers two "big name" acts at a time for most of each day, and I'm sure that the Boston Calling braintrust will be counter-programming the stage off to the far right in the photo to offer something different than whatever is on the one of the alternating main stages at any point in time. I suspect that more people are going to be happier with the lineup than before, simply because they'll be another option besides the same local bands you can see in town any weekend which played the tiny side stage last time.

Ha, we've had this conversation before. For myself it's more that the circumstances surrounding seeing these bands are becoming less and less optimal at festivals. For example, M83 at the Pavilion having an amazing lightshow, whereas seeing them at Osheaga a week later in full daylight felt like a complete waste. Or crowds not giving a fuck about an act (especially common earlier in the day), which thus rubs off on the performance of an artist. Or say, Savages playing the Paradise this past April for an utterly mesmerized and attentive audience. In other words, qualitative shows over quantitative ones. But like I said, I genuinely do hope you enjoy the lineup, given your lack of alternative options to choose from.

I'm very confused by what the size of the artists at this festival will be, but here's my 2 cents

I like this, but I think Sigur Ros are too big for a second line (they played Agganis last time they were here) and Local Natives too big for the fourth (they subbed in 2012). Some shuffling around and I'd be pretty happy with a Strokes/MGMT/Miguel/Quilt day.

With the bigger space/more people/more bands, I'd say XX would either be 2nd or co-headline with Bon Iver or something (Crash line has the connection to him due to the other fest they do in WI). And just in general I'd like to think with the bigger space, they'll get more than 23 bands for 34k people right?

Yes. The sensible prediction is slight bump in headliner level and an increase in artists. I'd probably guess 40-50 but tough to predict with no info. I was hoping they'd do a 4-stage setup similar to Gov Ball (2 artists at a time) but it looks like they're only doing 3.
Also for the record, my two most confident predictions are Bon Iver and Chance. Kendrick is my ultimate hope for a #1. I'm probably setting my hopes a little too high, but a top 20 that looked something like this would make me very, very, very happy:
Kendrick Lamar | The Strokes | Bon Iver Chance the Rapper | The xx | Ryan Adams | MGMT Solange | Grace Potter | Young the Giant |GRiZ| Glass Animals Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats | Charli XCX | Action Bronson Cold War Kids | Mac Demarco | D.R.A.M. | Sylvan Esso | Margo Price

I gotta say that mock lineup is better than the one they did this year tbh and Chance never did that 2nd boston show this past fall and him doing Hangout and having quite the year, yea he's my number one choice I've been dying to see him.
What would we think of Gambino doing it? The new LP is fantastic and a Bino/Chance lineup would be unreal to say the least
For that Strokes spot- Is Killers or Mumford more realistic than Strokes or is Strokes just wishful thinking lol

Gambino is possible, and would be great, but I feel like if they're going to do a hip-hop headliner, they should do someone who hasn't already (co?)headlined. Another thought that occurred was A Tribe Called Quest. But their tour plans didn't really sound concrete enough to be booked. This is the fest that got Nas and the Roots though, so you never know.
Strokes is wishful thinking/an artist I've been predicting since the festival started. I have to imagine they'll play eventually. I don't see any reason the Killers are any more likely than them, but I did consider Mumford because of Hangout. Again it's hard to gauge how big they'll go, but I figured Mumford and Kendrick was a step above what they'll do.

Lol if you want this come on down to hangout fest bud.
Thoughts on LCD Soundsystem? Now that they're announced for Forecastle, I could definitely see them doing a run of some of the smaller US fests
I mean it's definitely possible, but I think Boston Calling is still not as significant as Forecastle. With the expansion, it might allow for us to get a bigger name if the right pieces fit together. That show would be great.

3 of Forecastle's 4 headliners last year have headlined BC. Also Odesza is at #3 and was #4 at BC last year. You're giving Forecastle a bit too much credit.

I think Forecastle has more money to work with while BC does a better job booking acts. That's what I was trying to say. If BC succeeds in it's new location and earns more money, I think BC is a at the same level in terms of being at the same "tier" as Forecastle.
