Elle King is surprisingly great. Saw her open for Of Monters and Men twice in 2012, she's a big leap up from then. Loved the Beatles cover. My excitement for Janelle and Haim is pretty high right now
I was only at her set because my gf wanted to see her. I ended up enjoying it a lot.
Also, I completely regret wearing shorts. I'm pretty cold.
I was hoping you found an answer to this. I don't wanna leave disclosure early, I have a feeling charles bradley won't go on till 12. There are two opening acts with an official start time of 9:45. If they both play 40 min with 15 in between then maybe 11:30 at the earliest
This is what I'm hoping as well, gonna jump in an uber as soon as Disclosure is over
I thought Haim were fine. Pandered to the crowd a bit too much for me and could've brought the guitar up a bit but otherwise didn't notice any issues and I had a good time.
But let me just say that Janelle Monae was my favorite set of the fest, no question. Probably one of my top 5 Boston Calling sets. Saw her at Roo in 2014 and thought she was good but wow, she owned that stage like a motherfucker today. "Q.U.E.E.N." Into "Electric Lady" was a fantastic combo (like it is on the album) and the James Brown, Jackson 5, and Prince covers were all stellar. I'm ready for her next album whenever she wants to get around to it. Damn. Still blown away 3 hours later!
Also I was enjoying disclosure but had to leave because the people I'm with wanted to go and we him only had one car. All I want to know is if Sam Smith showed up.

I guess Sam Smith really was here to visit family. Still an amazing set, so much dancing and fun and I had a wonderful group of gay guys who were rolling next to me whom I befriended, they were lovely.

It was clear that Sam Smith wasn't going to join once Omen started in the middle of the set. Epic trolling at the end there by hyping up a guest in the encore.

Janelle Monae was freaking amazing! Like unbelievable. definitely best set of the day, and she even gave Sufjan a run for his money for best set of the weekend.
1.Sufjan 2.Janelle Monae 3.Lizzo 4.Christine and the Queens 5. Sia

Asked a guy when I got there and he said Charles had been on for about 45 minutes. Only caught about 30 minutes and but from what I could tell he pretty much stuck to the same setlist he played at Boston Calling earlier in the day.

Only managed to set down and read some of this thread now. Glad y'all had a good time! This was one of my favorite Boston Callings yet. My top 5 were:
1. Janelle Monae - Easily the best. Huge energy and that Prince cover! 2. Charles Bradley 3. Courtney Barnett 4. Robyn 5. Sufjan
With honorable mentions to Battles, UMO, Christine and the Queens, and Haim. Lady Pills were also pretty dope on the Verizon Stage. Didn't really enjoy Sia as much as I thought I would. After Sufjan's extravaganza, her pre-filmed videos and singing along to a backing track was pretty boring. Her dancers were good, but I was more impressed by Christine and the Queens dancers!

I kind of agree, but still loved her set. I didn't mind the videos, because I viewed them as an extension of the performance. But the difference live music would have made would have been immense. The whole set was also just mixed too quietly, at least from where I was

Did you stay till the very end? While he was making his ending speech he was talking about breaking down barriers and how we all need to love each other and then he said something like "why we all wanna build walls? - like with mexico". Just slipped a little anti-Trump into his love speech. I thought it was funny.
I decided to make a mock for a potential lineup for next year. Went with 54 artists and upped the headliner level a little bit (but not to full Roo level). I'm predicting something along the lines of Gov Ball in the long run, with 4 stages and 2 artists on at a time.
Arcade Fire • The Strokes • Lorde Fleet Foxes • Chance the Rapper • Flume • Ryan Adams • Grimes • Weezer Grizzly Bear • James Blake • Local Natives • MGMT • The Kills • Explosions in the Sky Charli XCX • Gary Clark Jr. • A$AP Ferg • John Butler Trio • Anderson .Paak • Dr. Dog Run the Jewels • Glass Animals • Sylvan Esso • Mac Demarco • Margo Price • Jim James Frightened Rabbit • Jeremih • Jack Garratt • Dinosaur Jr. • Pond • Dawes • Chairlift • Real Estate St. Paul & the Broken Bones • Cashmere Cat • Låpsley • Passenger • Kaleo • Hiatus Kaiyote Benjamin Booker • ALUNAGEORGE • Goldlink • Preoccupations • The Suffers • White Lung • Hiss Golden Messenger Wet • Roman GianArthur • Speedy Ortiz • PUP • Quilt • Ruby Rose Fox

So, this edition was in the top 3 BC's in my book.
Lisa Hannigan & Aaron Dessner: Simply okay, sucked for them to be delegated to background music in that timeslot. Sufjan was amazing, didn't think it would top his festivalset at NFF last year but it did. Sia had a good show and a great voice, but it didn't cover up the fact that she plays overproduced commercial pop music-by-committee. The middle portion of her set was boring, and you could tell the audience was losing it too.
Palehound: Not bad but mostly forgettable. Lisso was a fun show and I can forgive the cliches of using the rap airhorn as well as a DJ dance interlude with popular top 40 tracks (Work and Formation in this case). Battles: Left me mostly lukewarm The Vaccines: Post Breakup Sex was the highlight, don't think they have much of a future in terms of new material. Borns: Ehhhh. It felt like a mashup of a modern day Spotify playlist. Remember that South Park episode with people from the future, who's features have all been mashed together? Basically, that, but then musically. The cover of Arcade Fire's Rebellion (Lies) was a nice surprise. Courtney Barnett: Totally killed it, the brick oven conditions made it even better and more rewarding for the small crowd that dared to be out in the sun. City of Colour: Siesta music Miike Snow: Animal was a fantastic closer. The rest of the tunes didn't sound as tight as they sound on record. Too many people talking didn't help either. ODESZA: Watched this from afar while waiting at Robyn. Wished I didn't after hearing there was ample space at Robyn later on. Still, from what I witnessed it was super cool and a good party. Robyn: See my earlier post.
Michael Christmas: Good for him for getting the crowd lit at 1 in the afternoon. Christine: Fun times, missed hearing that song Saint Claude, her stage banter is somewhere in between endearing and cheesy AF. Unknown Mortal Orchestra: Poor sound mixing made me zone out of this completely. Vince Staples: Surprisingly low energy from both the performer and the crowd. But I think that's just Staples' personality, it's not like he has to be Travi$ Scott and jump around like a monkey in order to entertain. Really dug his rapping and dry stand-up comedy in between songs. Charles Bradley: I have no knowledge of soul music nor any special feelings for the genre, but he was very solid. Front Bottoms: Eeeeemmmmmooooooooooooooooooo. Elle King: All I could think was "poor girl for having inherited Rob Schneider's features" Janelle: Super awesome, those three covers could have been cheap but she and her band performed them flawlessly. HAIM: Okay, seriously, I'm glad everyone liked this but I walked all over CHP to see how it sounded like, and all I heard was an obnoxious recurring thunderdrum, singers who couldn't carry a tune, and musicians who were either rushing or dragging (to quote the movie Whiplash). Could have been poor sound mixing since UMO suffered from this on the main stage. Disclosure: I had written these guys off after the weak AF second album, but they totally won me over. Bang That was my favorite part of the set and this was easily the loudest show I can remember at Boston Calling. Perhaps the organizers went all out with the sound levels as a big F.U. to City Hall?
Despite various less-than-positive things I've said about this festival in prior posts, I felt sad leaving last night and knowing that it won't return to the same location. Lets not fool ourselves in thinking that the new venue will be an upgrade in every level. I wouldn't expect there to be re-entry, and it's questionable whether Crash Line can get big headliners given all the nationwide competition from Live Nation and Goldenvoice.

If you book Hiss Golden Messenger, you've got to book Fly Golden Eagle, too, and have them play at the same time on a different stage, just to quack with people.
But seriously folks, I could definitely get behind this lineup.
Of course, we'll know more once the usual X factors of who's on the road next year and who's reuniting to cash in on the festival circuit become clear. If Hell freezes over again and either The Smiths or Oasis reunite, I'm sure they'd want to make a big splash by getting either.

If you wanna get down to it, Sia kind of is the pop music writing committee
She writes everything for everyone and if they don't want it she takes it and kills it (usually)

Wishful thinking, but I also think Arcade Fire will definitely be there next year. New album on the horizon, Aaron Dessner connection, and I'm guessing this new fest will be big enough for them.

Very true, and it's great that she's able to make a reliable living this way. But it doesn't make the music any more interesting, since it all has the same songwriting structure and conforms to the lowest common denominator.

your ordering/tiering is a little wonky, tbh.
Tiers were just what worked best with the spacing, weren't meant to imply anything. But which ordering did you think was weird? There are a lot of artists/genres I know less about so I'm sure I made some mistakes. Esp. The bottom half
EITS would probably be higher than most of the non-headliners. Speedy Ortiz wouldn't be on the bottom line, Dinosaur Jr would be higher, Chairlift would be lower, Jim James would be higher, RTJ would be higher, James Blake and Anderson Paak would probably both be higher, Local Natives would be lower, Dr. Dog would be lower
I think you've got the right(ish) collection of artists, though
