This. I know last year's lineups were pretty shitty, but I had high hopes for 2017 given the abundance of quality artists that released new music last year or would be releasing new music this year. But once again, the European festivals are taking a giant dump on the North American festivals, save a few bright spots like Coachella, Boston Calling, and Panorama.

Maybe the fall lineups (ACL, Lollapolooza, Voodoo, Riot Fests, etc.) will improve on the junk that's out there so far.

Don't we go through this every year? "Last years lineups were better then this years.." then next year when 2018 comes out we'll say man this years sucks remember last year when they had all those good bands....

Yep.
I am more excited for this years lineup than last years.

I would say no, at first. When you look back 5, 10 or 15 years later, it seems better because we all know all the lower card acts. But did maybe the festival circuit peak 12/13/14? Because every year (Hangout included) during that era seemed to offer exciting lineups. Maybe music isn't that creative at the moment or maybe we all got spoiled there for a bit. Maybe the plethora of idgaf EDM vs a few reliable (and a few suck) DJs or acts contribures to less excitement. I'm not sure. But it's also possible the corporatization of the festival scene along with the explosion in the number of festivals just waters them all down. I'll still go to at least 4 this year, 3 of which will be unique lineups and Voodoo holds out some hope because it's always at least decent.

so far I think panorama has the best lineup this year even though I'm not a big Nine inch Nails fan. The more and more lineups drop the better hangout is looking also, nothing against head and heart but how are they fourth slot at Sasquatch???
Thinking Big Gigantic and Nathanial Rateliff are on the radar for Pre-party. Thank goodness the 1975 is out as they just released a spring tour.
Still not sure why GV is holding back Firefly's lineup. Hoping it won't delay the pre-party lineup release.
Yeah I agree, they usually throw in a mid tier rapper. I'm hoping for Danny Brown/Flatbush/Earl Sweatshirt but knowing GV we will probably end up with Rae Sremmurd

I think Bonnaroo's is better this year than last, but Shakey Knees is definitely down over last 2 years. To me, this year's Hangout is comparable with last years, and I had a fine time at last years.
Other fests that have dropped I haven't checked out as I'm not going to them & thus it would be a waste of time for me to compare/contrast them.
I have only seen these guys once. They closed one evening of 2013 Bunbury. Had a big & happy crowd there at start of set (it had been a gorgeous day, with some killer music). Alot of the festgoers really didn't know much about them (as Bunbury skews older than Hangout). Well, they played their set & had a fine lightshow & got into their encore & did that & it became apparent to anyone who knew one of their songs, that they were not going to play that one killer song that they had.
Of course, you know which one. Completely ruined the great vibe that had been going. A whole lot of puzzled people left that night (as some of them couldn't even name 'Kids', but had heard it & liked it & realized they didn't freaking play it). I was pissed & wrote the fest owner about it & we got in a big long email back & forth & I finally got him to realize he'd been played by them. He vowed it wouldn't happen again & was going to be talking to their management (something he should have done before they ever took the stage).
I am firmly in the camp of, if you go to a random concert by any touring band, be prepared to mostly hear the record they are flogging & their pick on the other stuff. However, if you are at festival, especially in a Headliner capacity, I expect a greatest hits package. Thankfully, most artists realize this. I don't know if MGMT does yet. I hope they do.

This holds true unless you are Radiohead.....MGMT...you will never be radiohead.

When I hear someone new at a festival, I try to hear enough to get a fair sample. I think there is some expectation headliners play a fairly decent size sample of hits. Tom Petty could play hits for hours so I'm sure someone will miss one of their favorites if he plays two hours and a few non-hits. Heck, I prefer hearing some old non-hits in the set. I also like to hear beach appropriate tunes if you got em. If you can play "like waves crashing on the beach" as a cover, cooool.

on the flipside of that when I saw Andy Frasco in the fall he legit took song requests from the crowd, including one of mine and played them on the spot. That was pretty awesome.

Problem is every song of theirs is a "greatest hit"
That guy just blew my mind... The artist is getting payed to play music. Unless there is a part of their contract that requires certain songs be played, then the fest and fans can fuck right off. Like... Wtf, lol. I am nearly at a loss of words. All I'm saying is you need to get that stick out of your ass and realize that nobody owes you anything. Especially not a band that is playing you music, ha
Friedcrabclaws my group and I are at Wolf Ridge brewery in Columbus. Any other good spots you know of?
Between now and the show you're in a pretty good location. If you want some cheaper beers closer to the venue to pre game check out the R bar right by the arena.
Even though they're everywhere this year, I was real happy RKS was on Roo's poopy undercard. Gave em a listen for the first time when they showed up on Hangout's lineup and there's no way I'm missing them. Was worried Roo would fuck that one up too.
