This article really made me angry so feel the need to vent a bit. Surely there is someone in the media who would like to write an article shedding some positive light on this event. Yes there is no denying that there are drugs at this venue and believe me my heart breaks for the families who lost loved ones at this event. I can't even begin to imagine their pain. I have said many a prayer this past week for these familes.
However, it saddens me that the media is incapable of printing anything positive about Bonnaroo? This was my 2nd 'roo and I take away wonderful experiences. I had the opportunity to hear all types of new music and learn about artists that I might not normally have given a chance. I also love the peaceful vibe that is present in this community. Life is too serious and if for 72 hours we can feel 10 years old again while walking barefoot in the rain with mud squishing through our toes and escape our email, cell phones and TVs then aren't we lucky? We all come from different places and cultures and I for one am excited that so many different people can come together and learn from each other.
I would hate to see this event canceled and even worse, I would hate to see it taken over and commercialized. I agree that some of the drugs are out of hand and I honestly don't have the answer for that one, but my fear is if they try to crack down more..... it would probably lead to increased alcohol sales and consumption and that brings along a whole new set of problems. I guess after all my ranting what I am really trying to say is that there are so many good things to focus on besides the drugs at B'roo and I for one would love to see someone write an article showing another side.
I like how they just threw in the "Oh yeah they give us money that's not even taxes." This does not bode well for us. I'm sure they are are going to have it in Manchester in 2005. For 06 it might be in a different place. I can understand why they are upset, the traffic and the drugs would bother anyone. If they added 7 bucks a ticket would you come back? Is Manchester worth another 7 dollars? I'd pay it.
This was my first Roo and I think the organizers did an incredible job. With 90,000 people, you are going to have things happen. I'm not sure what the answer is as far as the availability of drugs. Those same drugs are at other concert venue's. It's just that with 90,000 people, it seems huge! In the end, you have to take responsibility for yourself. I heard that one of the deaths was of natural causes, not drug related. Now, what does enrage me is the story of the young couple with a 1-year old shooting up. In my opinion, children should not be allowed at Roo. As much as I believe kids should be introduced to music at an early age, Roo is not the place to do that.
Maybe, if all 90,000 of us write positive letters to the city of Manchester, they'd hear our side.
