In 2008, after a few hours perusing the board garnering information, my buddy Jay and I packed up a crappy Cruise America RV and started an 11 hour journey to somewhere in Tennessee. Woefully under prepared, we drove all night, stopping only for a short sleep break at a truck stop somewhere around mile marker 94 off 24. We did the VIP jaunt to the high school, and over to what we affectionately came to call the farm. As we parked the RV next to a magnificent motor coach, we realized that by pulling in, we might be able to steal a bit of shade from our neighbors in the coach. After unpacking in about 5 minutes, we sat, drinking a beer, watching them set up.
They were a bit of a motley crew, a husband (Jeff) and wife with three co-workers: Single Guy ( don't remember his name as he took to much on day one, got lost, and asked some guys to throw him over the VIP fence where he landed and destroyed his ankle), Molly and her wife, and this crazy little guy in a Michael Jackson glitter shirt. As is apt to happen at Bonnaroo, we lent a hand, they offered a beer, and soon we were fast friends for the weekend. Our home was theirs, although their home was much more often ours. They brought better beer, in both quality and quantity, while we had ample amazing food. As a group of noobs, we found our way around Centeroo, caught shows, talked music, and developed some solid relationships.
Like most first timers at Roo, it was a life altering experience. We broke our pit cherries for Pearl Jam, eargasmed at Ghostland, chanted Kanye Sucks with Robert Randolph, but one moment that will forever stand out is dancing til dawn with Tiesto, Jeff, and Jason. Jason is the crazy little guy in the Michael Jackson glitter. If one were to look at his crew in 2008, he would have been voted most likely to not succeed, and probably least likely to become a dear friend for life. I'm happy to say that I'd have been wrong on both counts. Sometime before or just after Tiesto, he gained the nickname DJ Two Strikes, as he spun house music as a side job, and happens to be both gay and Jewish. 2Strikes pulled it together personally, advanced in his career, was recruited away from his home and company for an amazing opportunity in Arizona. Life is good for Jason, and that alone makes me really happy. We don't see each other often these days. We talk once or twice a year, picking up the phone like we had just spoken the day before. talking for hours like a couple of high school kds.
While in AZ, Jason met a guy (who oddly enough is from the town I live in Ohio) and fell in love. They want to tie the knot, and have an opportunity to win a free wedding. While I might be the only on this board to know him, he is definitely an Inforoo'er in spirit. I've attached the contest link, feel free to vote for the guy that took off the Michael Jackson (which was later replaced by Lady Gaga!) shirt, and traded it in for the hot pink shirt in the video. I'd love to see him win, and appreciate your time to read this thread, and hopefully vote for him.
