If you honestly think that Lupe Fiasco is doing something better than Joey Bada$$ in the year 2015, please stop listening to hip hop forever.
"Lyrics that hit the black community to the core." Please, tell me more about the core of the black community, and how Lupe Fiasco is more in tune with the black community.
And where on earth do you see that the "rap community" has given Lupe "much better reception" on the comparative new albums?
The majority of hip hop and rap magazines (and critics in general) have rated Lupe's album higher than Joey Bada$$' album. That's not to say that it's a better album... because I don't always agree with the critics. But it has received better reception. Most websites showing user feedback has also given it a better reception. I enjoy both albums so I don't say that to knock Joey Bada$$'s. Although, I will say that he has one of the most ridiculously embarrassing rap names in the history of the rap community.
I do feel as if I've come across too harshly on this new Lupe album. It's miles better than anything he's done in 8 years or so, and it's an amazing recovery from his last embarrassment of an album. I've actually been revisiting it quite a bit today in the wake of this debate, and I will say it's grown on me. I still think B4.Da.$$ shits all over it, but it's better than I initially gave it credit for. It's entirely possible that I was so used to the garbage that Lupe has been putting out that I just couldn't see how it could be anything but - it would be like drinking a gallon of spoiled milk and tasting ambrosia.

I like em both. BUT, for me at least, Joey's album has a longer replay value, seemed a bit more versatile, and is more fun to listen to. I will say though that I've always thought Lupe was an exceptional lyricist. He has never had a great album in my opinion, but a collection of great songs straddling several albums. I think this was his best and most complete album as a whole.
How great is it that we have two outstanding rap albums vying for AOTM when last year we had arguably 11 months without even a rap contender in the hunt?
Run the Jewels came out in October. So did Black Milk. RATKING came out in April. Yeah, it was a down year for hip-hop, but to say we didn't get anything until December is kind of ridiculous.

Well maybe 10 instead of 11... but you catch my drift.

The name Joey Bada$$ is ridiculous in a very awesome way.
I don't know about the Lupe album. It's like a little better j. Cole album. Has it's moments, but mostly generic and boring. Joey's album is leagues above.
Also, Freddie Gibbs and Madlib was such an underrated album when speaking about 2014 hip hop. I saw it on a bunch of eoy lists, but always in the 20's. It was undoubtedly the best hip hop album of last year. A top ten album no doubt.
I'm listening to the Lupe album now, and it's dragging on. According to Spotify, it's an hour and 18 minutes long. I would have rated it a 5 or 6, but I'm getting bored with it - it probably should have been split in two.

I kinda felt the same way. It's not as fun to listen to as Joey Badass' album; it's more of a chore. But I think it'll grow on people with multiple listens. Still better than the stuff he's put out the last few years.
For me, it was Ghost Culture vs Viet Cong vs Panda Bear, but today I listened to the new Aphex Twin and Natalie Prass. I just don't know anymore. Great month for music! Who would have guessed?
I don't listen to many hip hop albums, but I'm really into B4.DA.$$. It's probably my favorite hip hop album since Good Kid, M.A.A.D City. I'm still leaning towards Panda Bear.
Anything besides Sleater-Kinney has an uphill battle to fight for me at this point, but upon first listen Twerps - Range Anxiety is deserving of consideration.
EX: I like the Viet Cong album the most and will be the album I listen to the most in the following months but I think that the Panda Bear album is better even if I don't have a strong urge to play it often. I should vote for Panda Bear then, correct?
You can do it either way man. Personally, I'd rather see who liked what the most, rather than what they "feel" is the best. This isnt fucking Pitchfork!
Just for clarification. We vote for what we feel is the BEST album and not necessarily our favorite release, correct?
Anytime I vote for anything on this board, including this thread, I always vote for what I like the best. I wish everybody did. It makes it a lot more fun and interesting.
As an aside, I really like the new Panda Bear and loved Avey Tare last year, but don't care for Animal Collective - is that common??
That is actually fairly surprising to me, no idea if it's common or not though. I'd strongly suggest revisiting Animal Collective, you might become a fan.
Which Animal Collective albums did you listen to? That might have played a large part in it.
To me, the early albums from Spirit They're Gone to Here Comes the Indian are drastically different then from Sung Tongs forward. The early albums are much more experimental/noise oriented.
If you're more partial to Panda Bear's albums, I'd start with Merriweather Post Pavilion. I think it's their most accessible album, and the sound on that album is closest to what a solo Panda Bear album would sound like.
After Merriweather, I'd suggest either Strawberry Jam or Feels, can't go wrong with either. Sung Tongs is great too, it's just Panda Bear and Avey Tare, and more of an acoustic/freak folk sort of album. I really enjoy their newest as well, Centipede Hz, but not sure it would be the best place to start. It's a very sonically dense album that took me a bit to really process.
Animal Collective took a little bit of time for me to really appreciate. It finally just clicked with me though, and they're absolutely one of my all time favorites now though. So just give the albums a listen or two, maybe revisit them in a month or so. And maybe you never like them, which is cool too. But if you're a fan of the solo work, I bet you'll come around.
I vote for Sleater-Kinney. I haven't listened to the other albums you're all talking about, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like them as much.
Definitely go ahead and post the album cover of the album you want to vote for. It makes it much easier to actually see what the votes are. Votes in text get lost in the thread.
