For what it's worth, this month alone has seen almost as many great albums as all of 2014. Percussions, Sleater-Kinney, Joey Bada$$, Bjork, Viet Cong, California X, Mark Ronson, Belle & Sebastian, the Notwist, Jimmy Edgar...man, 2014 was shit.
Agree.
Sleater-Kinney is way more solid than I had hoped for. Viet Cong is solid (though after only one listen I like it less than the EP). Didn't totally dig the Belle $ Sebastian.
BUT - this Joey Bada$$ is as good as any hip hop album I heard in 2014. I'm already on a third run and there are some special tracks on this thing.
Need to go listen to that Percussions.
Back half of that Bada$$ album is especially great
So if Kendrick's album releases this month...I think January just took a big 'ole shit on 2014 in its entirety.
Ya, not so much for my tastes...at all. Definitely some good stuff this month though.
I don't believe last year was bad at all. But I can see looking back, how it wasn't as good as the previous years. I think Bjork has already topped everything that came out last year. So there's that.

There's a few that stand out. The last two more so than the former are solid.
The Decemberists - What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World Justin Townes Earle - Absent Fathers Catfish And The Bottlemen - The Balcony Ty Segall - Live in San Francisco
It's amazing how in a month packed full with great releases, some of you still manage to highlight the dreck.
This better not be in regards to the Live Ty Segall, or i might have to #radiatedickpunches.
Finally got around to listening to that new FJM. Not what i was hoping for, but I'm sure it will grow on me. Percussions and Joey Bada$$ have reinvigorated my desire to seek new music. I had Viet Cong as a lock for this month, but both of the fore mentioned are at the top of my list, after putting in a few hours of listening last night. Sleater Kinney really surprised me too. Still gotta get to that Bjork album.
You forgot one minuscule detail: @rorybbellows' opinion is the only one that really matters when it comes to album reviews. He is the judge, jury, and executioner.

I'd be shocked if he bothered to listen to it yet.
January looks wretched. Fingers crossed for a left field release.
I'm assuming you were hungover from NYE when you said this and everything was wretched.
HA! It looked bad before we got those left field additions. Past California X, Disappears, and S-K, I wasn't excited about much. Now I'm excited about too much.

Of course I've listened to it. And it's not an awful album, it's certainly better than anything he's done since the Cool, but it's a 6 out of 10, maybe a 7 if we're being generous. Compared to the other releases this month (Bada$$, Bjork, Percussions, Sleater-Kinney, Aphex Twin, Viet Cong, etc.) it's hardly noteworthy.
Bada$$ was a little lackluster to me... even though I did enjoy the album. It seemed like he was using the same old rap formula used over and over from the past. Nothing new or unique. Lupe Fiasco has a better rap than Bada$$ with lyrics that hit the black community to the core. He's one of the most honest rappers out there. He always manages to bring something new to the table, too. So far, the rap community has given Lupe much better reception than Bada$$ on their new albums, and I would agree.
With that said, I've listened to Bjork's "Black Lake" at least 15 times in the past 24 hours. It's going to be a close call between Lupe Fiasco, Bjork, and Sleater-Kinney for me. Viet Cong hasn't grown on me as much as I had hoped... I'm still listening to it, though. It makes me want to put my Joy Division albums back on.
That's the good thing about music... different strokes for different folks. As an adult, I would never criticize someone for enjoying an album or artist that I didn't, though.

What do you think of that Aphex Twin? I personally don't know what the fuck is going with it.

If you honestly think that Lupe Fiasco is doing something better than Joey Bada$$ in the year 2015, please stop listening to hip hop forever.
"Lyrics that hit the black community to the core." Please, tell me more about the core of the black community, and how Lupe Fiasco is more in tune with the black community.
And where on earth do you see that the "rap community" has given Lupe "much better reception" on the comparative new albums?

I'm still digesting it. I think I like it better than Syro, to be honest. I only downloaded it a day or so ago though.

I've given the new Viet Cong album a few listens, but I just can't get into it much. I really enjoyed the two singles, but the rest of the album just doesn't seem to live up my expectations after first hearing "Continental Shelf" and "Silhouettes".

It's the definition of difficult and experimental music. I was sort of expecting Syro part 2 and was caught off guard. I've only listened to it once. While I thought the first track was immediate it enough, it's obviously going to take a lot more spins to grasp the whole thing.

Both songs are great, but "March of Progress" is insane. Probably my favorite song of the year so far and the song I am most looking forward to hearing live.
I've been working absolutely insane hours this week and haven't gotten the chance to listen to much, but I'm excited to hear about these good reviews. The only new thing I've listened to so far has been half of Bjork, which I really liked - haven't had a chance to really delve into it though. And though Lupe hasn't really done anything noteworthy since The Cool (which was fantastic), I was really into his FnF work and hope that this new album might in some ways return to that - not holding my breath though.

The majority of hip hop and rap magazines (and critics in general) have rated Lupe's album higher than Joey Bada$$' album. That's not to say that it's a better album... because I don't always agree with the critics. But it has received better reception. Most websites showing user feedback has also given it a better reception. I enjoy both albums so I don't say that to knock Joey Bada$$'s. Although, I will say that he has one of the most ridiculously embarrassing rap names in the history of the rap community.
