I've seen many examples of Inforooers and their generosity. Here's a thread to allow those of us involved in nonprofits to get the word out. Who would like to go first? Anybody? ... Anybody? ...Buehler? ... OK, I will.
Name of nonprofit? The Bay Area Urban Debate League or BAUDL.
What is your involvement? I'm a longtime supporter and I'm on the Board of Directors.
What does it do? BAUDL helps to establish and maintain competitive debate leagues in under-resourced public high schools, through which under-served youth are taught to research and advocate positions on complex policy issues. Its participants are overwhelmingly students of color (98%) and low income (66%). Our program has a direct, measurable impact. The young people who participate see their literacy scores increase 25% per year and their odds of going to college increase 30%.
What is your involvement? I volunteer for them and enter all the dogs and cats on the website, with photos and bios. I've rescued 2 dogs through them, and occasionally foster dogs for them.
What does it do? Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue is a NO KILL, all volunteer, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization based in Middle Tennessee. Funds for medical care and food are raised by a variety of events, such as bake sales, raffles, and participation in large media campaigns such as The Big Payback or through regular donations on our website.
Our rescued animals come from high kill shelters, picked up as stray's or abandoned animals, and a few owner surrendered
We are known for accepting pets that other rescues refuse due to the high cost of veterinary care the animal may need
Our rescued pets are kept in foster homes where they can be evaluated, trained and treated for any medical conditions
We offer hospice homes for any in our care who need it
We seek out trainers for our rescues who have special needs due to abuse or neglect
We offer sanctuary for those truly not adoptable
All adopted pets are spayed or neutered
We average $12,000 a month in vet bills alone
In 2013 we took in 794 dogs and cats and one horse; we usually have 150 dogs and 50 cats in our program at any given time
In the course of a year, we need to raise nearly $300,000 to care for the animals we take into our rescue
Every Saturday since 2006, we have held an adoption event at the Petco in Bellevue, TN
Any animals placed by our rescue MUST BE returned to our rescue if for any reason the adoptive home cannot keep the dog in the future
Our goal is to see that our animals are never again placed in a bad situation

I know you're not all living hand to mouth. Someone out there must be looking for a end-of-year tax deduction and the opportunity to help young people in need.

I wish I had known about this rescue when I lived in Nashville. I volunteered at the Nashville Humane Association, but this no-kill rescue sounds amazing. I also wish I had more to donate, but we currently provide free room, board, and medical care to four creatures of our own. We're doing what we can. It is a very, very good thing you guys are doing. Thank you.

It's a great rescue! There are quite a few around Nashville that are similar, and do wonderful work. The animal control laws in this state are awful, or non-existent, so there is a huge need here.
We have 4 large dogs, and probably will forever foster a senior eventually (there is also a rescue that just deals with Senior dogs). I send $10 a month to 3 different rescues - I feel like that isn't too much for me to miss, but it is a big help for them. I wish I could do more also
