I think that the first song of an album is really, really important, as it sets the tone for the rest of the album and I generally use it as a barometer for how well I'm going to like the rest of the record.
Absolutely. I tend to view music and cinema as two sides of the same coin, and if I'm not drawn in by the first song, first scene, first chapter, then the artist is already fighting an uphill battle to keep my attention through the rest.
I also think the opening song on a debut album is nothing short of a statement of purpose, most especially the first lyric - and "Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine" hits me like a bomb every time.
I'll have to think this one over for a bit; the Age of the MP3 has hindered my ability to recall track listings as well as I should.

Now for me personally these next 2 really really float my boat though understandabley they may not be be everyone's cup of tea. For me though, they are the 2 greatest opening tracks on albums that just boiled over with awesome from that moment on. I wished there was a way for me to get these to play one rright after another because they really do compliment each other perfectly.
Escape From Noise - Negativland - "Announcement"
Charlie -!!!!!!!!!! :happy-dance:Melt Banana !!!!!!!- "Introduction for Charlie"
My all time favorite: Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding - Elton John/Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Other notables not mentioned yet (I think): Astronomy Domine - Pink Floyd/Ummagumma Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix Experience/Are You Experienced I Am Trying To Break Your Heart - Wilco/Yankee Hotel Foxtrot Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan/Highway 61 Revisited Wordless Chorus - My Morning Jacket/Z 21st Century Schizoid Man - King Crimson/In The Court Of The Crimson King Loser - Beck/Mellow Gold Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel/Bridge Over Troubled Water Steady As She Goes - The Raconteurs/Broken Boy Soldiers Sleep To Dream - Fiona Apple/Tidal
Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel/Bridge Over Troubled Water
I've actually always thought this is a terrible first song. You never open with the big ballad. I think it was a really strange choice. I've always thought it should end the first side or end the album. I think the album would be better opening with The Boxer or Baby Driver.

I have to agree. It is a bizarre choice to lead off that album and I think The Boxer should have led it off and BOTW should have closed it.

Good call. R.E.M. opened several albums well. "Finest Worksong" set the tone for Document, "Feeling Gravity's Pull" established the feel for Fables, and "Begin the Begin" is maybe the best of the examples with Life's.
The first two songs that popped into my head with this thread were "Welcome to the Jungle" (already mentioned) and "More Than A Feeling" from Boston. I think those two really resonated because they were the first songs on the first albums.
Maybe it's because I just really like these albums in general, but...
Andrew Jackson Jihad - Rejoice Ben Folds - Bastard Father John Misty - Fun Times in Babylon Rage Against the Machine - Testify Sigur Ros - Gobbledigook The Streets - Everything Is Borrowed The xx - Intro
PTM - In the Mountain In the Cloud - So American (And I'd nominate Sleep Forever as the perfect last song on an album as well. I just really like that album.)
