I've got a friend who is well-listened and open minded musically and I sent him a link to "Champions", like hey have you heard the new Kanye track. He listened to it and dug it, then said he'd never really listened to Kanye West. I was like whaaaaaaat. Turns out he's avoided Kanye because of his public persona, which is pretty common I guess. I offered to make a playlist, and he said he would certainly listen to a "carefully curated" kanye playlist if I made one.
So knowing my friends preferences, I focused on Ye's more progressive later work, but with some hits/bangers thrown in there. I know the lack of earlier tracks will be upsetting to people. But if you have any comments on the playlist lets discuss:
1. On Sight 2. Cold 3. Runaway 4. Stronger 5. Waves 6. Mercy 7. Black Skinhead 8. Power 9. FML 10. New Slaves 11. Devil In A New Dress 12. Clique 13. Monster 14. Flashing Lights 15. Facts 16. All Of The Lights 17. Famous 18. Through the Wire 19. N--- in Paris 20. Ultralight Beam
I had to trim a ton of tracks I wanted to include, I really didn't want to go over 20. Even that is too high IMO, but I did the best I could. Some of these are just personal favorites, like while there are better Kanye songs than Clique, it has possibly my all time favorite Kanye verse.
I put a lot of thought into the order and am proud of the way the playlist flows. Some notably fun juxtapositions are Stronger > Waves, New Slaves > Devil In A New Dress, and All Of The Lights > Famous.
i was so gassed last night that I thought King T made this post
you got some good stuff on this, for sure, and I'm woefully underprepared to discuss Pablo so I'm gonna leave that aside for now
the important thing about playlists is the way it flows, and you can actually do a real nice job with Ye even though his sound has changed so drastically over time
here's how I'd do it, roughly. this is pretty much off the top of my head
1. Jesus Walks 2. Can't Tell Me Nothing 3. The New Workout Plan 4. POWER 5. Black Skinhead 6. Mercy 7. Primetime 8. All of the Lights/All of the Lights (Interlude) 9. Street Lights 10. Blood on the Leaves 11. Blame Game 12. Runaway 13. All Falls Down 14. Diamonds from Sierra Leone 15. Touch the Sky 16. Through the Wire 17. Lost in the World/Who Will Survive in America 18. Family Business 19. Gone
You open big. Jesus Walks is a good slow buildup, then you get into peak cocky Kanye quick with Can't Tell Me Nothing -> The New Workout Plan -> POWER -> Black Skinhead - Mercy section. Primetime is sort of your first lowkey song, and a killer b-side from WTT. You gotta take the listener on a journey, and it can't be all thrills. You use that to segue into the moody Kanye section in the middle. The All of the Lights -> interlude -> Street Lights sequence is one of my favorite playlist sequences I've ever come up with. it's perfect. I like using that as a segue into the self-conscious Kanye, which makes it a great place to put Blame Game, Run Away, and All Falls Down. Blood on the Leaves doesn't quite fit that motif, but it's gotta get in there somewhere. it's too momentous not to be on the list, and that aspect of it fits well alongside Blame Game and Runaway, which are also titanic songs. After that stretch, you gotta bring people back up, so Diamonds from Sierra Leone and the Touch the Sky do pretty well there, as well as getting some more of Kanye's best record in there. Then you get into the real introspective Kanye to close. But of course you gotta end strong, and Gone has to be last.
One of my friends posted this today and it was too good not to share. As someone else already said, I care about this way more than I should, but seriously this:
"Yes, poor Taylor Swift is the victim once again. A victim of a “character assassination”. A character assassination much like when she posted Joe Jonas‘ breakup voicemail on YouTube. A character assassination much like when she described the woman Joe Jonas dated after her, Camille Belle, as “an actress, she’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress“. A character assassination much like the time when she publicly dissed Harry Styles – while he was in the audience – in front of millions while accepting a VMA for yet another song she wrote about an ex. A character assassination much like the time she literally called up all her “friends” to make a video dragging Katy Perry. A character assassination much like the time she humiliated Calvin Harris because she got pissy after he denied her involvement in a song (a song she didn’t want anybody to know she co-wrote btw). But not before cheating on him. And you didn’t ask to be part of the narrative? Sorry. Did John Mayer, Taylor Lautner, Jake Gyllenhaal, Joe Jonas, or Harry Styles ask to be part of your narrative that you used to portray yourself as a victim? No? Then shut the fuck up."

i was just thinking bout this the other day too. i know i could go look myself and quickly, but when is the first show?
August 25th in Indianapolis. I'll be there, and I really hope there's no opener and we get 3hrs or Kanye.
Chance has a show in Columbus, Ohio the next day and doesn't have anything else scheduled around then. My girlfriend has been bringing it up all the time, and I'm trying not to get sucked into the hype, but he hasn't played in Indy since 2013, or even in Indiana since he played in Bloomington a couple of years ago....

That would be amazing but I don't want to get my hopes up since his other tour dates wouldn't work. How does Kanye perform Ultra Light Beam without Chance? So much of TLOP doesn't have Kanye actively involved, so is he just going to stand around and dance while the songs play? I listened to his interview with Annie Mac and he said he was working on "the story" of the tour so I'm guessing it will have a storyline like the Yeezus tour. I have so many questions and it's so exciting to go into the first date completely blind.

Oh my gosh yes!!!! I've been waiting so long for Kanye to go back to the "story" thing he does on tour. I'm going to try and go in blind but that'll be a challenge for the Atlanta date. I'm just going to have to ignore Kanye news headlines for a while
