If you live in or ever visited the Atlanta area, you know that the only good and truly great thing about the area's radio is 88.5 WRAS. It was announced yesterday that they will be handing over their daytime programming (5:00am - 7:00pm) to Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Over the past 10 years, 88.5 is the only station I would listen to for music and it is a travesty for this to happen. This station broke the likes of REM, Outkast, and Deerhunter and have always been a truly alternative voice in the Atlanta community for 43 years. Please read more about it and sign the petition to stop this from happening.
This deal was made without the knowledge of the knowledge of the students, faculty, or radio staff and announced at the end of the school year to prevent protests. It was very poorly executed. They are selling out one of the school's greatest legacy's for $150,000 over 2 years.
Thank you for your assistance in taking down The Man and keeping the music alive in Atlanta.
This really is terrible news. WRAS is by far and away one of the best radio stations I've ever listened to and about the only good one in Atlanta. And the surreptitious sale of the airtime by the school is inexcusable.

I signed it earlier today and have been urging everyone on facebook to as well. I'll probably start calling the GPB and GSU folks tomorrow complaining about this change.
This move would kill the only good thing Atlanta radio has going for it. I can't believe GSU could be so naive.
It was. Doing the petition, calling higher-ups to try to talk about the importance of punk rock in Friday afternoon rush hour, etc. I'm very upset about all of this.
GA State has been giving protesters a form letter. As you might have guessed, it's very unsatisfying.
"Thank you for your perspective on the new partnership between Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) and Georgia State University. I view the partnership as a positive step for the university and GPB that will open the door for future collaborations. Our students will have new and exciting opportunities in the changing media landscape, and this partnership allows GPB and Georgia State to better serve the metro Atlanta region and the state. Daytime radio broadcasting of Album 88 will be streamed live online, and our students will have unprecedented access to GPB's resources through one of the GPB's digital television channels. Our students will also produce a weekly half-hour magazine radio program about music and will have the opportunity to learn from veterans in the broadcasting field. GPB has a history of partnerships with university affiliates, from Mercer University to the University of Georgia. It is my sincere hope and expectation that this collaboration will benefit the university and the community. Thank you for your comments. Mark P. Becker, Ph.D. President"

Seriously, what a slap in the face. You know what would be really helpful for preparing kids for a career in broadcasting? Letting them run a radio station.
This is just so insulting. It's like they're saying "GPB is giving you all this awesome stuff and I can't see what you're complaining about!"
These guys wouldn't know culture if it bit them in the ass.
That's EXACTLY what they're saying. It comes down to funding and of course they're going to go with the plan that keeps money flowing but the whole thing (especially the "well you get a half hour") is an insult to what independent radio stands for.

Bump. GSU President Mark Becker says "We’ll weather this. People get upset when there’s change." He has no idea.
I think what will really fix this (eventually) is when the amount of alumni donations pulled as a direct result of this exceeds $150K. Then and only then will the administration realize their mistake. That's the only way they will understand.
There is no way you could possibly choose the GPB deal over this, unless there was some other motivating factor in your decision(that you haven't told the media about).
