No, this isn't about a new band (though Ketchup Monkeys is pretty good for a band name). I used the weird title to trick you into viewing this thread. Now I need your help. To catch up with recent music and be held accountable for listening to it/posting my thoughts.
I still listen to stuff but have unintentionally kind of turned off my "discovery" part and tend to throw on albums by bands I know and love already. For a variety of reasons including a broken ipod, no spotify-premium (yet), and lame excuses (like not wanting to listen with just one earbud in at work because I'll miss some stuff in the songs) I have seen my active music listening amount really go down. I listen to new albums but it's mostly been whenever it's streaming on a website. I want to give more albums/artists the same amount of time I've given all the others I've grown to love in the past.
This thread will be where I post about what I'm listening to (I like to try and give albums a few full spins at least before moving on to something else), my thoughts about if I liked it or didn't like it, and most importantly recommendations from you fine folks. I've gone through a decent chunk of the "Best Albums of 2013" thread and picked out a variety of artists/albums that were mentioned more than once and will likely be doing the same for the recent "Album of the Month" posts.
My favorite current bands are My Morning Jacket, Wilco, The Felice Brothers, Dr. Dog, Jack White/White Stripes and my favorite legendary acts are Hendrix, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, The Band, Frank Zappa, and the Grateful Dead. Favorite rap acts include Jay-Z, Kanye West, Wu-Tang Clan, and Mos Def.
Here's a handful of items that I got recently and added to my itunes/google play account (after using the Best Album of the Year thread for 2013 and some other areas of inforoo). Some of them I've heard but only once or twice and a lot of them are new discoveries for me:
Danny Brown - Old Jason Isbell - Southeastern Deafheaven - Sunbather My Bloody Valentine - M B V Ghostface Killah - Twelve Reasons to Die Local Natives - Hummingbird Fitz & The Tantrums - More than just a Dream Foals - Holy Fire Phoenix - Bankrupt! Waxahatchee - Cerulean Salt Foxygen - We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic The National - Trouble Will Find Me James Blake - Overgrown Kurt Vile - Wakin on a Pretty Daze Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Push the Sky Away EL-P & Killer Mike - Run The Jewels Atoms for Peace - Amok Deerhunter - Monomania
I have a longer list at home and will post that later.
Will be posting my thoughts on what I listen to here. Anyone can comment or recommend some stuff if they'd like.

I'm not super familiar with them, but I have listened to one of their albums a few times in the past. Not enough to retain it or look into lyrics/song titles though. They're going on the list, thanks.
Your trick worked excellently. I'd definitely give "Bankrupt!" a few spins - I hadn't listened to Phoenix before the lineup dropped, and they're slowly working their way up my priority list of acts to see. Chance the Rapper's mixtape "Acid Rap" definitely borrows a bit stylistically from "College Dropout" - no soul samples, but its very melodic and cohesive, and you can tell that Chance is having fun doing what he's doing. I'm also a bit of a Chance stan though so take that FWIW.

I knew the first Phoenix album a lot more and have given Bankrupt! a few listens in the past couple months. It hasn't stood out to me yet as anything epic but I've liked it. I wasn't a huge fan of the singing when first getting into Phoenix but have really gotten into them the more that I listen to them.

Phoenix actually had 3 albums before Wolfgang, all of which re better than Bankrupt. Try "It's Never Been Like That."

Awesome, I only really knew of Wolfgang because of them getting huge around that time and them playing Roo. Will need to look into those older ones.
Right now I'm listening to Danny Brown - Old. Liking it so far but only a few tracks in.

Don't let Delicious Meatball Sub fool you with this statement itrainmonkeys. Bankrupt! is criminally underrated (and sooo much better than albums 1-3).
But you should check out the previous 3 of course. Especially, It's Never Been Like That.

Here's the rest of my list so far from 2013 (and older) that I plan on checking out. I will probably add more to that (and start adding more recent 2014 stuff):
Frightened Rabbit-Pedestrian Verse
Justin Timberlake - The 20/20 Experience
Suede - Bloodsport
Lorde - Pure Heroine
Jon Hopkins - Immunity
Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest
Jason Isbell - Southeastern - downloaded
Neko Case - The Worse Things Get ...
Pusha T - My Name Is My Name
A$AP Rocky - LongLiveA$AP
A$AP Ferg - Trap Lord
Nine Inch Nails - Hesitation Marks
Mikal Cronin - Mcii
The Shouting Matches - Grown Ass Man
Phosphorescent - Muchacho
Disclosure - Settle
QOTSA- ...Like Clockwork
Also need to check out more from: The Decemberists and Milk Carton Kids
Thanks so far for the recommendations guys.
Today I had Danny Brown - Old and Phoenix - Bankrupt! I was checking out. Liked the Danny Brown stuff and that was my first real exposure to his work. Some songs reminded me of some older rap I liked and I plan on listening to that one some more.

So I think the important question here is: Is this an attempt to A/become more educated about acts that are already in your wheelhouse but with which you are currently unfamiliar or B/become more fluent with different types/styles of music and subgenres that you may not have given a try in the past for some reason?
Yea, a lot of these I've heard but not really gotten to know and actively listen like I've liked to do in the past. I usually like to give albums a lot of play and take a listen with the lyrics handy to really get to know the songs a bit more. Most of these I would stream while at work after they came out but I didn't really pay much attention all the time. Plus, I would tend to focus a lot of my main listening time to all the bands that I know and love already that had new albums out.

I think you could say it's a little bit of both. Maybe leaning a little bit more to the second part because i'm trying to focus on newer bands that I'm not as familiar with and have delayed listening to for one reason or another. There are a lot of acts i'm kind of familiar with but that I never gave the full attention that I've given other bands I like...where I'd go through the discography and really focus on different full albums for quite some time. There's definitely a good amount of styles/subgenres here that I'm not too knowledgeable about that I wanted to check out. Mainly because I would see them listed in the Now Playing thread and in the "Best of 2013" lists a lot by people who's opinions I respect on here. Some instrumental stuff and some of the bleep bloop stuff that I've checked out but never actively pursued.
There are some acts that are in my wheelhouse that I just haven't checked out the new material from but in general I'm looking to broaden my roster of regular artists I listen to. Bonnaroo and music festivals have introduced me to so many varieties of music and I love that but I felt like I was missing out on a lot of stuff and wanted to try and find that passion again for music discovery. I also plan to use this thread as a place to post my thoughts on stuff as I listen to them and why I like/dislike certain things...which in turn could lead to people recommending more albums (like things from that same artist or similar artists). It's really not just about new music that was released in the past year...that's jut a jumping off point.
Nice trick, ITM. This sounds fun to play along with.
I will second War On Drugs and Real Estate and add Mac DeMarco and St. Vincent. St. Vincent's self-titled is outstanding and you will definitely like it if you enjoyed the album she made with David Byrne. With Mac DeMarco I would start with "2" but all of his albums are really good.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds today. Most of my Nick Cave exposure comes from movie scores and random listens. I've had the album Push the Sky Away on in the background in the past but now i'm actually paying more attention to it (while working of course). It takes a little bit of getting into that mood though. I don't want to compare it to Jim Morrison but the first few tracks with the spoken-word kind of lyrics and the deep voice made me make that connection, though I'm sure Nick Cave has a lot more substance to his work than Morrison just talking trippy.
Anyway, digging it so far. Are all of Nick Caves older stuff similar to this album or is this a bit different?

Been listening to more Nick Cave and Frank Ocean to try and battle out for who gets the Roo late night spot I'll see. Between that and Kanye I've been doing some re-listening.
Took a break and began to check out newer stuff that I got on Record Store Day (Deer Tick, Ray LaMontagne, Conor Oberst, Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa) and am now starting up the new Ray Lamontagne album Supernova. Some songs sound a bit different from his previous work but others are right in the same zone.
Will be checking out more stuff I don't have on Spotify soon.

Finished up the two new tracks from Damon Albarn on spotify and really enjoyed them. Now I'm trying out Diarrhea Planet for the first time. Liked a video of theirs I watched earlier so am trying out their newest album on spotify.
I didn't want to make a new thread because this is basically the exact thing I'm looking for. The first half of the year I am useless for new music and listen exclusively to Roo bands. Even albums that I anticipate and look forward to I usually end up forgetting about. So basically I'm just looking a list of the albums I should start digging into.

Bumping this old thread to try and catch up on tunes again (or still, depending on the releases).
I was way behind on this from Hurray for the Riff Raff album. I'm kicking myself because I really like it and had a chance to see them but only caught a song or two at Newport Folk Fest
I still have a lot to go through but finished updating my ipod nano recently with some stuff.
