Hey Quietus, I take it all back, there's a new worst list already. Just saw Rolling Stone's list and I think they've been hacked. I mean they are traditionally awful, but this is like on purpose bad.
5.5/four tet, daphni b2b floating points, avalon emerson 5.12/neil young 5.19/mannequin pussy 5.21/serpentwithfeet 5.25/hozier 6.12-16/bonnaroo 6.28/goose 6.29/goose 9.17/the national + the war on drugs 9.23/sigur ros 9.27-29/making time 10.17/air

It does make you wonder what they are trying to do when they put this together. You knew they had a hard on for Bruce, but how could the best album of the year be an album that people didn't even want for free.

Wow, The Quietus and Rolling Stone lists fit oddly together.
One as hipster zenith, the other as an aged rocker trying desperately to be cool but still trying to argue how great the new U2 is.
U2, a throwaway Springsteen album and the 3rd straight Black Keys "Sell Out" record. Those are the albums of the year? Damn, RS needs to just hang it up.

Truth. This is pretty bad. Rolling Stone's is just the worst now.

To be fair to Rolling Stone, the rest of the magazine is really great these days. They been getting solid interviews, decent features (albeit still a little 60s heavy), and have been doing great political coverage (some of the best researched and most accurate stuff out there). But their album reviews are garbage.

I'm pretty sure Fricke has a boner for Bruce and Bono. Will Hermes and a couple of other reviewers they have are usually on point. I was surprised the rag only gave Foo's new album 3 and a half stars and don't know why they even bothered reviewing One Direction, though that one did make me chuckle.

Agreed. As much as I dislike their reviews, what keeps me renewing my subscription is the features

Yup, not a knock on their journalism at all. I've long been a big fan of a lot of the journalists there, writing about all sorts of things. The political coverage is good writing but a little one-sided at times. But for a rag that is supposed to be about music, first, they should still be embarrassed by their music reviews and lists.
Eh, I just realized that pretty much all of my favorite stuff from this year was either an EP or a single:
- Both Traumprinz EPs - Jamie xx's three singles - Inter Arma's the Cavern - Darkside's singles - Robyn & Royksopp - Pretty much everything Bicep released this year - Percussions - 0 to 100 - Mogwai's new EP
Actually, after giving it a better look, it's not a bad list. There is plenty on there I need to check out, a good number I loved, and the top 10 doesn't look like something one of my cats left in the litter box.

The way Paste does their lists, it's almost more about what gets included, not where on the list it is. Overall I think the only album that I was surprised didn't make their cut was Benjamin Booker's. Other than that it was a pretty solid list. I knew about 75% of the albums and the others seem like stuff I should check out. Anyone here familiar with Sturgill Simpson's album? I've seen it on a couple lists.

Simpson's album is great. Country with wisps of psychedelia.

Sounds like it could be my cup of tea. I'll definitely give it a listen before making any year-end decisions
Every year, the Quietus is the only list that doesn't have the same old sh*t as everybody else. And consider that they European based, they will definitely have a different view than our US sites. But lets all bash them for having a more unique listening experience.

That's not what I said though. First of all, by definition you can't have a more unique listening experience than anyone else. I have a fairly strange and eclectic taste in music and appreciate some of their selections, but I'm still in bounds to believe that they went overboard with some of their selections, especially when they don't line up with their own published stuff on some of the albums. I can appreciate the list for introducing me to music with which I'm unfamiliar (and kudos for including Adult Jazz by the way) and still think they dug out some outro albums they didn't even talk about during the entire year to ensure that they stay edgy and fresh. If that's what you're doing, fine (just like Rolling Stone does by sticking half-assed old white guy albums on their list), but call it something other than the best albums of the year.

Umm, what am I missing?
"Here is the Quietus' main albums of the year list for 2014"
"AOTY list procedure. We take votes from everyone who works in the office (Luke Turner, Laurie Tuffrey, Sophie Coletta and myself) based purely on which albums we’ve listened to the most during the year."

I didn't see that part. Fair play to you on that point.

They always clarify how they make their lists.
Instead of getting mad at them, I take it as an opportunity to listen to some things I would never of heard of otherwise.
