When The Suburbs came out, I really thought they would be the next Radiohead... it just seemed like they had that magic touch on everything they did. Then they took a step back with Reflektor... and now I think this album may be their worst by a wide margin.
There are definitely some good tracks on here... but there seems to be just as many tracks that I'm already pulling out of the playlist after just a few listens. What a bummer

Yeah, I'm higher on this album than Reflektor. Peter Pan -> Chemistry is pretty bad....big fan though for the run of Electric Blue -> Good God Damn -> Put Your Money On Me. Creature Comfort is still my favorite song off the album.
After two listens, I enjoy it more than reflektor. Pitchfork must really dislike it to give it a 5.6. That's like throwing it in the garbage for them.
I haven't been able to take Pitchfork seriously for a long while.
that would make sense if they didn't rate every arcade fire album BNM, they were probably bummed. things that have been well received here recently have been well received there. Tyler, lorde, lana, EX EYE!, gizz, arca, vince, prins thomas, etc. I haven't listened to it yet, but none of the singles clicked with me (all of which pitchfork has been sharing, and covering)
When you tell your friends you're about to start listening to the new Arcade Fire...
Hey, that was me!
To be fair, I've only listened to the first half of this so far, but that's because I really hated what I was hearing. I think Reflektor is a pretty great album. I don't see this as the continuation of a trend that started with that album. I think this is just a cliff that they drove off.
I'm on my first listen of the album but I feel like I'm having to force myself to do it. There are some good songs but that whole thing just seems really lifeless
If anyone was wondering, the word "chemistry" is used approx. 50 times in this album. I'll let yall figure out which track has most (or all) of them chem drops.

Good God, Damnnnnnnnnn. If this was a TV show we'd all be up in arms over how badly written it is.
I'm working overnights this whole weekend so I'm going to do my own review of this.
I would like to point out and I welcome some fact checking on this, but I believe this is their friend album on a major label (Sony?) and perhaps they weren't able to push exactly what they wanted.

so you might be suggesting that someone here works for them?

I just hope y'all get to hear Windowsill, Neon Bible, and Intervention at your respective upcoming shows. Those were highlights when I saw them last month.

Yes, this. I still havent made it through the album yet, for precisely this reason :/
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
I really like how it loops in on itself. After a couple listens I don't think it's as bad as everyone's saying, the criticisms are very valid though. Especially with Win's vocals, I kinda wish Regine was the full-time vocalist
Trying to keep this as short as possible because Im getting loopy from lack of sleep but it feels like the middle of the album is completely misplaced.
Everything Now (c) > Everything Now > Signs of Life > Creature Comfort = Great, I like the intro into the title track. I feel safe we these songs already out and enjoyable. They feel experimental, kind of chaotic but in sync with that appeared to be the albums approach to oddly connected but disconnected world we live in. It is different then all other AF albums but the lyrics and song writing still feel creative and fresh.
Peter Pan > Chemistry > Inf_Cont > Inf Cont > Electric Blue > Good God Damn = WTF. Shit falls off the rails in this 1/3. Peter Pan, while not necessarily a bad track just feels completely out of place especially after an incredibly bright musically yet dark lyrically song like Creature Comfort. Whatever the goal was with this transition just feels missed. It then leads into the Chemistry which is either Win's attempt at machismo pick-up artist song, or, hopefully for art's sake, a song about drug addiction disguised as such. Still, it feels completely out of place from how this album started. We then have the "twin" Inf_Content songs split between a sort of punk version and backwoods country version. Again, the songs aren't bad but what exactly is happening in the middle of this album. After that, Electric Blue comes in and picks up where Creature Comfort left off and I start to feel safe again until GGD slows us back down and I feel like the trip is at another halt. Not a bad song but it feels out of place. The middle here just feels like a conceptual mess, unless of course, the point of the album was to hit as many musical styles as possible for whatever reason.
Put Your Money On Me > We Don't Deserve Love ? Everything Now (c) = Decent back three. PYMOM is one of my favorite tracks with groovy bass, decent beats and enjoyable lyrics/harmony. We Dont Deserve Love isn't my favorite but is still an identifiable strong song with honest, emotional writing. And then the final Everything Now (c) is a reprise of Everything Now in the orchestral manner we've known AF to bring. It feels like their attempt at the end of movie/victory lap that doesn't feel well deserved after grudging through that middle mess.
tldr: It's a donut/bagel album.
Favorite Tracks: Creature Comfort, Put Your Money on Me, Electric Blue Decent: Everything Now, Signs of Life, We Don't Deserve Love Meh: Good God Damn, Everything Now (cont') x2 Delete!: Chemistry, Peter Pan, Inf_Content x 2

this is kind of exactly how i feel. The songs in the middle aren't horrible, they just don't really seem to fit the rest of the album. It really seems like a tonal shift from Creature Comfort to peter pan. I enjoy the album, but definitely wouldn't put it in the top 3 for them or anything.
Signs of life also isn't that great. and I could really go without the pan flute on everything now. electric blue is the only song i genuinely enjoyed.
We can all try to lie to ourselves or make excuses, but this was super underwhelming. At the beginning of the year if you told me there would possibly be 20 albums that would come out before August that I would like over the most recent Arcade Fire, I would not have believed you.
Who all is seeing them live? I just scooped up tickets last night for their Miami show. What should I expect? I unfortunately was too fucked up at their 2011 bonnaroo show to remember anything, so this is a sort of...redemption show for me. Can't wait tho!

I'm going to the Nola show, it'll be my third time seeing them. The first time I saw them was at Jazz Fest in 14 I think, and I was really underwhelmed. But I might just really not like Jazz Fest, because I went to their Voodoo show last year and was blown away. Easily in my top 5 sets.
So I think you can expect some awesomeness, personally I'm banking on the new songs translating really well live. Here's the Voodoo set for reference:
Somehow the only time I've seen them was one of those popup shows before Reflektor came out and they pretty much only played those songs, so I'll hopefully be seeing the NYC show.
