I always hear people say they don't like Ed Sharpe and the magnetic Zeroes because of their faux hippie image. I personally have no opinion on that since I've never seen them live. The few songs I've heard by them sound alright. It's true people do go through changes , so it's very possible he did embrace this lifestyle he displays now. There was a joke the last time they played Roo that someone saw Alex at one of the exits after their performance trying to hitch a ride to a hotel room for some AC and a shower.
Or it's entirely possible that since the guy works in showbusiness, he displays an on-stage persona that is tailored towards his audience. It's fine for people to hate on Edward Sharpe for not being a "real" hippie (btw, there aren't any of those guys left, except maybe Dale- and even that's pushing it...) but by the same criteria David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Captain Beefheart, Daft Punk, Gorillaz, GWAR, Lordi, KISS, and every actor you've ever enjoyed in a tv show, film, or play must also be hated on. Or, one could pick up a hobby or a volunteer spot at a local charity and suddenly find themselves with only enough time in the day for things that they like.

I just didn't think there was that big of a market out there for hippy-folk acts and most of Edward Sharpe's fans aren't hippies. I need to stop defending an artist I'm indifferent to. I would contribute more to this thread, but I can't really think of an act I totally dislike that I have given a fair listen to. I do generally despise most top 40 country and whatever is topping the iTunes charts.
I will stick within the realm of genre's I like (I'm not going to randomly crap on new country artists I've never listened to) and artists I have tried repeatedly to find some enjoyment with.
That being said, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen, Rush, the NA dubstep movement of the last few years, Tiesto, Kid Rock, Creed/Nickelback/Theory of a Deadman (and anyone else who road the coattails of Pearl Jam to popularity), Pulp, Joni Mitchell... I could go on at length but that' probably enough to stir up some Shining hatred on the boards
And here we are arguing about whether or not Alex from Edward Sharpe is a phony. Contest over.
I actually think Kanye is one of the most sincere and straight forward artists of today, he doesn't compromise himself to make others happy. His music is selfish in that way, if you want to criticize him for anything.
What's a good starting point for Prince listening?
You could start here, but I thought everyone had seen this already. I wouldn't want to hang out with Priyance, but he is at the top of my bucket list for musicians who are still in their prime. My show-going will be incomplete until I see him, he's my favorite guitar player. Also see the Superbowl halftime show he did to start.
If you must, go to 3:20 mark for Prince part, but you should watch the whole thing.

Not one thing about that guitar solo is "gentle". I bet this video dropped alot of jaws when youger people like myself seen it. Im 23 and thought I knew he was a good guitar player. Now I know hes a great guitar player. Roo 2014.
Radiohead, Dave Matthews Band, Arcade Fire, Black Keys, Bon-e-bear, Skrillex/Dead-mau five and the other dubsteppers, pretty much anything with Jack White . . . what is that . . . what are you doing . . . well shit

my uncle spent some time with him and said he's pretty cool and really nice
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

I've got one that I used to love along with everyone else... but have grown to dislike more over the years. I do not like Led Zeppelin nor do I think they are very honorable musicians. They played some great music but I wouldn't be very motivated to see their reunion unless we both happened to be at Bonnaroo.
