I don't get Wilco, either. Maybe one day. They are pleasant enough, just hasn't grabbed me at all.
crazykittensmile Please watch the documentary "I am Trying To Break Your Heart" if you haven't already. It may change your mind just a bit. It may not....but it definitely made me a bigger fan of theirs when I started to first listen to them. Then listen to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot after watching the story of its recording/release unfold.
I understand almost everything that has been posted here to some degree even if I feel differently, except this. They have pretty diverse sound so it's hard for me to imagine someone hating all of it. Not my favorite band or anything but I've never understood the hate/dislike.

The thread doesn't say "bands you hate" it says "bands that you don't like". And in that regards, I agree with the Beatles. I have just never been able to get into them. I understand the brilliance in a lot of their songs/albums, especially Sgt. Peppers, however they have just never stuck with me. I really don't know why, but I just can't get into them.
Also, I will never understand the appeal of Regina Spektor.
She has fun, catchy, quirky songs and she's absolutely adorable.
More power to ya, but I find her voice to be grating, her songs to be annoying, and her "quirky"-ness to be terrible. Much like how I feel about Zooey Deschanel.

The title of the thread says "don't like", but the first post leads with "I cannot stand these three acts, because I can't stand them. And I've tried. What bands fall into this category for you?", so I can see how someone could think it implies a strong dislike/hate for the bands in question. That is why I didn't put the Beatles. I don't like them, but I wouldn't put them in a "can't stand" category.
I forgot Japandroids. Just can't get it, and some of my best friends hate me for it.
It took me forever to appreciate Bruce Springsteen, but I absolutely get it now. The Boss won me over at Roo for good, but I had a roommate who had every album of his and really knew what to play for me to start my opinion over on him. Same goes with Wilco. It took a long time, but Wilco finally won me over at Hangout and Forecastle last year. Nels Cline turned into one of my favorite guitarists in two shows. The previous times I had seen Wilco, I left disappointed and I heard similar reports from Roo this year. I guess they're a band where it's hit or miss for their live shows for casual fans.
A lot of these bands mentioned, of Montreal, Flaming Lips, Phoenix, for examples, I was first turned onto by seeing them live (all at Bonnaroo coincidentally) and then I hit the albums. I doubt I would have liked them as much, had I not discovered them live and then had people shove down my throat how awesome they are.
I find myself liking this thread more than I had expected to. Bird I'm with everyone who's mentioned The National - man they just bore the hell outta me, first time I'd heard of them they were opening for Arcade Fire and it was torturous. The Smiths...I HATE The Smiths and everything Morrisy has ever done really. That guy and his band are the worst. I just don't get it. Sooo boring to me. And the one that will probably get me pilloried Van Morrison...His music just doesn't appeal to me in anyway.
Daaaang! With one post, you crushed my & Mayo's hearts re: The National & The Smiths...then you stomped on the pieces w/the Van Morrison diss? *sigh*
Just keeping it honest! I really don't get The National or The Smiths. Those are just my personal opinions and I don't think it reflects negatively on someone if they love those bands. Van Morrison is unquestionably talented but he just doesn't do it for me though.
Not the right thread, but I've never heard a WSP song, someone tell me a good one so I can get an idea.
I am not a big Widespread Panic fan, but they were a bit of a "gateway band" for me and I always enjoyed them at Bonnaroo in the early years. They did a great job of building that collaborative spirit that Roo is now known for as shown in this video. I've skipped em the last few times they've been at a fest I'm at, but I still fondly remember our time together.
It's also interesting to see how far the stage production has come since year two. The main stage is now a permanent structure.

I frequently wonder about this exact thing. Had my first exposure to a band not been a fantastic live experience would I love them just the same? The Flaming Lips and The Eels both fall under that question.
Haha, I have to say I did a double take when I saw you "liked" my post about not liking them
Why`s that? Cuz my brother is a Wilco advocate? Haha I like a few songs, but I don't love any of them. And seeing them live didn`t really change my mind. I have tried to get into them more than once and just never did.

Yes! He's been quite persistent about getting me on the Wilco train, so I can only imagine you get that encouragement as well

Oh yes. Just a little bit.haha. I`ve been to Roo three times and Wilco is the only show that he said I didn`t have the choice to skip on. haha. Even out of Arcade Fire, Bjork, The National, and a bunch others he loves so much, Wilco is the only one that he has ever been adamant about me going to see. haha
