Yea, they've done that onstage kiss thing a few times that I've seen them. Not really sure what the point is or why some of the audience goes crazy for it. Always seemed a bit strange to me.

First song/video from the new album:
Look for Deer Tick's new album Negativity out September 24th, 2013.
Says Deer Tick's John McCauley on this particular song: "The Rock" is a song about being in love with an artist and subsequently having your heart broken by that artist. The silly little metaphors in the song are 'the rock' which is the power to destroy your relationship, and 'the window' which is the relationship. I like the idea of a breakup being represented by shattering glass."

Surprised by the lack of a Nashville date (Bristol is 5 hours away), but I'm sure they'll come back around before too long.

I caught them when they were a small name opening band and they have consistently entertained me in their live shows. I've loved the lineup changes they've had (adding Ian O'Neill on guitar and Robbie Crowell on piano/sax) and they put on an awesome live show. I can see not getting into their studio albums but I have had lots of people say that seeing them live is what hooked them. I know some give them the americana label but I consider them to be more of a a straight up rock and roll band.
And I'm not just hating for hating's sake, I really just don't get it. Everything I've heard is derivative semi-acoustic post-folk. And I feel like they try too hard to be edgy - like I'm convinced dude gets blackout drunk and snorts heroin just because he thinks it makes him totes rock and roll.
The last few concerts I've seen of them has had the main guy be mostly clean and sober. If anything he would have one drink on stage but the past couple years it seems like he's been going more for music than the shitshow where everyone's hammered and spraying beer on people. Of course, he could be doing that at other shows and I could just be getting the cleaned up version each time lol
One of their songs I really love, especially live is "Mange". That has been a fantastic show ender that avoids the acoustic stuff and just shows them jamming the hell out of a song. Sometimes they slip in a medley or tease of other classic rock songs and then go back to the jamming and then end the song.
I saw them live and it solidified my dislike for them, actually.
Not going to try to change your mind or anything but just curious if you have any more details about the show you saw? Was it because they were just shitty in general or was it them being wasted?

Their style has definitely changed. War elephant, Born On Flag Day, and The Black Dirt Session were more lyrically focused and more in the Alt-Country/Americana style. They were even being heralded by some critics as the next big thing in that genre after Flag Day. The last record seemed more like barroom, party rock. I usually enjoy seeing them live and McCauley's solo sets. I will be interested in seeing if they stick with the party theme on the new one.

That's a good summary of their sound, i'd say. When I got into them it was definitely more like that but then they did change it up a bit.
Based on what I heard at Newport's after show I don't think the new album is as much of a "party/barroom" type of deal. It seemed a bit mellower but maybe they sound a bit different on the record.
Not going to try to change your mind or anything but just curious if you have any more details about the show you saw? Was it because they were just shizzy in general or was it them being wasted?
Both. It was at Coachella and for whatever reason he wore a dress and they sounded abysmal.
Oof that sucks. And weird about the dress. Was it just him or the full band?
I know they all wore dresses at one of the shows I saw when they were opening for Dr. Dog a few years ago and they made some joke about being Dr. Dog's girlfriends or some shiz like that. But it was the last show of the tour so I thought they did it just for that....maybe they wore dresses more often on that tour? Strange and unnecessary IMO.
I think my favorite shows were after Black Dirt Sessions came out which was after the dress stuff. I really feel like Ian and Robbie added a much fuller sound to the band. Before it felt like John McCauley and Deer Tick but now it seems like they've all got roles to play. I like to think that Ian being brought in on guitars and for songwriting has influenced the band more towards the rock and roll type of sound. I've always loved when he sings Maybelline and had an awesome time singing along to their version of Down South in New Orleans that he led the band (and opening acts) in.

I can see how his stage presence would come off like that, especially at some of the shows I've seen. I think I got hooked because the first show I saw them play was as an opening act and I really enjoyed their set. Then I looked into them and liked the lyrics from McCauley on a few songs on the album and then just kinda started catching them more and more. Oh well...they're not for everyone. There are plenty of bands I don't like or don't get the appeal of.

lol I tend to throw that in there because in the past people would act like I'm trying to say they were wrong or mistaken. I'm a curious monkey trainer working on getting my private detectives license.

All i have to say is i love these gentlemen and they help raise money for multiple charities. Plus they play in springfield every year and no one plays springfield anymore and it's at a bar that i have probably spent to many nights in drinking. Still living off of the show from saturday night.
