Okay, question: If Florida State and Ohio State advance to the championship game, and Alabama is in the Top 4 of the BCS (like they should be), doesn't the Rose Bowl have to take Alabama? The rule I believe is that if you are a non-automatic qualifying team in the Top 4 of the BCS, whether you are from an AQ conference or not, and that if the Pac-10 OR Big 10 Champion advances to the championship game, that the Rose Bowl MUST take that team as one of it's slots. That's what happened in 2010 with TCU getting into the Rose Bowl, and they were also talking about it in 2011 when Alabama was on the outside looking in. That sets up a Stanford/Arizona State vs. Alabama game in the Rose Bowl.
EDIT: Alabama just gets an automatic bid, not specifically the Rose Bowl.
Auburn fan who was at the game last night. I never thought I'd see anything crazier than that Georgia game, but my god last night was incredible. Missouri is going to be a tough game, but honestly can't believe I was able to experience that Iron Bowl.
Yeah, that one and the Flutie hail mary were meaningless games. I'm still trying to think of a Pro freak or fluke finale that was better.
Well it wasn't the same level of fluke and maybe not quite as cool, but I was reminded of the Music City Miracle. That was meaningful - Titans ended up going to the Super Bowl and losing by about 11 inches.
They're calling that the greatest college football finale in history. I'm not sure I can think of a cooler Pro ending either, given the importance.
No doubt, It was a good one for sure, but the Boise St vs Oklahoma 2007 Fesita bowl was the greatest college game I can remember. That finale was amazing! And it ended with a marriage proposal.
Also, Dave that article you linked mentioned Lane Kiffin, I will say it now, if he is OC at Florida I will boycott all UF football games next year. Quack that guy! My vote is for the Joker. Having an OC with that name would be all good in my book and he is a good coach and the only one I can see who would take the position and still be able to keep our recruiting class together.
Yeah, the Iron Bowl was a great game with a fantastic finish, but it wasn't the greatest ever. Not in its own sport, not in all college sports, not in every sport....it's just a great ending. People are always rushing to dub things the "greatest" they forget to just enjoy it for what it was: a great play to end a great game that.

Unless they pull somebody pretty high profile somehow, Joker would be a good bet. I think Kiffin is just one of those names that is going to get brought up for everything this offseason. I agree with the article that Muschamp and Kiffin in the same room would probably be a personality clash for the ages. I also thought that mentioning Auburn's O coordinator was weak. He's got a good thing going in Auburn. They say he might want to step out from underneath Malzahn's shadow, but the guy is 30 according to the article. I have no idea why he would need to go out on his own at that age. They say the same thing about Kirby Smart every year, and it hasn't happened yet.

I agree sports writers love to jump the gun and forget the past. But then give me a better big game football finish.

For NCAA, I'd say that Boise State's finish over Oklahoma in a BCS bowl was bigger both in terms of the game itself and the implications (first time a small school won a BCS game). Yeah, the Iron Bowl had NC implications, but it was just an SEC divisional game. The brass balls that Boise State had to have to use not one, but two trick plays to beat an overwhelming favorite in the final seconds of one of the 4 or 5 biggest games of the entire season? That puts them at the top for me.

It was not nearly as important as the Iron Bowl game, but I still love this final. I was a big fan of that Colorado Buffalo team that year with Stewart, Salaam, and Westbrook.

First, I agree with you on the need to put a best of label on things can diminish the sheer greatness of a moment. I am loathe to put labels of "the greatest" on anything. I just feel like throwing the discussion out there.
To put out evidence for the Iron Bowl, Auburn was 3-9 last season. Even before this game, they had already set a record for biggest turnaround in SEC history recordwise. I am not sure how it ranks for the NCAA as a whole, but I am sure it is high. Alabama is in the midst of a dynasty. After they beat A&M and LSU, everyone thought they were on the express train to another SEC championship (and probably another BCS championship). Alabama is Auburn's biggest rival. Auburn had lost the previous two games between them by a combined score of 91-14. I would also argue that, whereas it is an SEC divisional game, I refuse to think that a game between a #1 and a #4 in the last game of the regular season for each is "just" an SEC divisional game.

Don't get me wrong, I think in the ranks of greatest finishes it's definitely way up there, I just think people rushed to label it the "best" and then the argument shifts to "prove it ISN'T the best" instead of "prove it is."
Great game, great play, I'm not going to over-analyze it.
Reports from ESPN and such are that Steve Sarkisian has been hired as USC's new coach. link
Not a fan. Terrible hire. Despite losing to UCLA, they should have given Oregeron the job. Haden already had decided he wasn't gonna hire O back when they made him interim and he wouldn't change his mind no matter what O did.
I say Mariota staying is a good decision. Very deep QB class this year. Hopefully he keeps it up and doesn't end up like another Javon Snead or Tyler Bray.
