“And I think what he should of gotten is like what everyone else got — a slap on the hand and six games.”
I expect "should of/should have" confusion from everyday civilians, but that was written by a professional journalist. Ugh. Way to go, USA Today.
That's not the journalist's words, it's still the quote from the fan - just a new paragraph. Note the lack of a closed quote in the paragraph above.
Closed quote from previous paragraph has nothing to do with that complaint. One, could possibly have said "should've" and was misheard/misquoted. Two, whatever happened to (sic)?

I'm commissioner of my family fantasy football league, which spans three generations with a 60+ year age span. Our youngest player is my cousin, who is (I think) 11 years old.
He's still young & learning, yeah... but in our draft this year, the kid took only two running backs: Adrian Peterson & Ray Rice.
I could make a number of comments about this, but they pretty much all come down to: this isn't a good thing.
Fantasy week 2, so far 1 definite win (Sang's league) 1 where I'm ahead ($20, partial keeper league) 1 where I'm behind (from another board) 1 definite loss (Thunderdome)
Hooray for the Pats winning, and not watching our defense give up 200 yards to Peterson
The real prize goes to the offensive line. Saints didn't come close to creating any pressure on Ryan.
Maybe the Saints coaching staff should look into paying bonuses to defensive players who really rattle the teeth of opposing QBs.
Maybe bonuses is not the word I'm looking for; bonanza? No, that's not it.
No, because paying players for making legal tackles that were hardly ever flagged and caused almost no injuries will cause you to lose multiple draft picks, lose your coach for an entire season, and basically ruin an entire season of football for a fan base.
I wasn't going to bring up Adrian Peterson, but while we are bringing up old news, maybe we should talk about current events...

Uhm... NO!
The point is that the punishment has already been carried out. I disagree with ever trying to purposely injure someone, although many players are trying to injure for free anyway. I definitely disagree with the things Gregg Williams said. I'm glad that he is no longer a part of the organization.
I am so pissed at the Vikings organization and the NFL. How dare they suspend someone before they are even convicted of a crime! What's the point of having a legal system in this country if you are going to be labeled as guilty before you even get a trial? Adrian Peterson is a good man and a loving father. He is not a child abuser. My brother works security for the Vikings and he's seen Adrian with his kids and knows that he would never intentionally hurt them. He obviously went to far with his discipline but I don't think he meant for the injuries to occur, he knows he's wrong and he's trying to find alternative ways to discipline them. He's even met with a psychologist. He's not a monster and he's not evil. He doesn't deserve to have his career ruined just because the media thinks they know how to raise his kids. The Wilfs are cowards for not standing up for what is right and caving to media pressure. What is right is playing AP until the courts make a ruling. Then they can hand out discipline if needed. I will not be watching the NFL for the rest of the year and am boycotting all sports media except during NASCAR coverage. I will proudly be wearing my Adrian Peterson jersey this Sunday while watching the NASCAR race.
The last time I boycotted the NFL was after the 2009 NFC Championship game. The Saints clearly cheated and nothing significant was done about it. They should have had their championship taken away. They don't deserve that championship and are a bunch of scumbags. Actually, they shouldn't have been allowed to even play in the Super Bowl. There were horrible unforgivable calls by the refs (like the instant replay that clearly showed AP had gotten a first down but the refs spotted it two yards back anyways) and they clearly were trying to knock off Farve's head with all the illegal late hits that were never called. The NFL should have struck down the hammer that very week as the mistakes were clear as day and allowed the Vikings to play in the big game instead. NASCAR got it right last year by allowing Jeff Gordon to compete for the their championship when they discovered cheating so why can't the NFL get it right. All the NFL did was suspended the coaches for a year. Those very coaches are still working in the NFL today. Everyone involved should have gotten a lifetime ban. I am still mad at the Saints for their cowardly, cheating act and, while it's a long shot now that AP is out (and they have the worst starting QB in the league), I hope the Vikings destroy them this weekend. I have never watched the 2009 Super Bowl and I never will. I should have just stopped watching the NFL altogether after that but I love the Vikings too much to stay away. Which is why my boycott this year is only until AP comes back. I still love the players and I think Zimmer is a great coach and I will be cheering them on from afar. I know it won't do any good to boycott the games but it makes me feel good to stand up for what I believe in even if nothing happens because of it. I just wish more people would boycott the games and the sponsors because the NFL won't change their ways until they start losing support and money from the fans. /rant

The NFL does not have to follow the Constitution of the USA. He is getting his due process in court. If any other company had the evidence on one of their employees similar to that has been compiled against Adrian Peterson, they would probably act in a similar way that the Vikings have, by placing that person on some sort of paid leave until the matter does sort out in the courts. I don't know what exactly you are complaining about.

Now that I've had time to really read this whole thing, I disagree with almost everything you say, and I can't believe/ pretty scared to think that there are thousands people who have your view point.
Your second paragraph is even more head scratching than your first.
1. Refs miss calls in every game, the '09 NFC championship was no different. Take a number and get in line to complain about that.
2. The Saints losing their coaching staff for a year, which resulted in a lost season basically, was pretty substantial punishment for the bounty scandal IMO.
3. I am not one to say anything about how parents raise their children, I'm not even against corporal punishment. But there is something about a 200+ lbs athlete beating a toddler with a stick to the point of visual injury doesn't sit well me, and shouldn't sit well with anyone. What possibly could a 4 year old have done to warrant that?
I am so pissed at the Vikings organization and the NFL.
I know! They've completely failed at implementing any semblance of a disciplinary system which actually reflects an interest in punishing players for criminal behavior, or alternatively are abjectly hypocritical when it comes to doling out punishment for fringe players (often cut immediately upon arrest for even minor offenses) as opposed to star players (who generally receive preferential treatment, regardless of the offense)! To make matters worse, they clearly have no true interest beyond preserving the bottom line.
What's the point of having a legal system in this country if you are going to be labeled as guilty before you even get a trial?
Well, he hasn't been labeled "guilty." He's been indicted by a grand jury on felony child abuse charges. But the NFL and the Vikings, as private enterprises, have the ability to suspend their employees based upon what they believe is conduct unbecoming to the standards of the organization. If you've ever worked for any private employer, particularly a large company, you realize that this is standard.
He obviously went to far with his discipline but I don't think he meant for the injuries to occur, he knows he's wrong and he's trying to find alternative ways to discipline them.
Here's an "alternative way" to discipline your children: don't beat them with a fucking tree branch until they've got open gashes on their thighs.
I don't think anyone thinks he's evil. I'm pretty sure everyone recognizes that he's just a man who did a fucked up thing, who is now paying the price.
The Wilfs are cowards for not standing up for what is right and caving to media pressure.
They didn't cave to media pressure. They caved because sponsors started fleeing the Vikings like rats on a sinking ship because companies like Radisson understandably weren't pleased that their corporate logo was being used as a backdrop for multiple press conferences where the subject was child abuse.
Also, "standing up for what is right" usually doesn't mean "standing up for the right of your star runnning back to beat his 4 year old child hard enough to leave open wounds," but then again I guess you and I have different views on what "right" and "wrong" mean.
What is right is playing AP until the courts make a ruling.
By that token, we need to see Ray Rice and Greg Hardy on the field, ASAP. And why the hell wasn't Aaron Hernandez catching touchdowns for the Patriots up until the moment he gets sentenced for murder? DUE PROCESS PEOPLE.
Um. What the hell are you talking about? Committing penalties which aren't called by the refs isn't "cheating." It's called "sports." It happens. The "cheating" (which wasn't actually cheating, technically the bounty system didn't give them some sort of competitive advantage a la the Pats videotaping practices or players taking PEDs or whatever) resulted in them having their entire coaching staff suspended from football for a year.
Again - missed calls don't amount to cheating, and you can't review every sporting event in hindsight and overturn the results based on what you see. That's insane. And again, the Saints offering bounties for their players making big hits/injuries/whatever, it's dirty as fuck but it's not technically cheating.
Due process for people who beat their children, LIFETIME BANS for the rest!
I am still mad at the Saints for their cowardly, cheating act and, while it's a long shot now that AP is out (and they have the worst starting QB in the league), I hope the Vikings destroy them this weekend.
Again, I don't think you know what "cheating" means.
I have never watched the 2009 Super Bowl and I never will. I should have just stopped watching the NFL altogether after that but I love the Vikings too much to stay away.
Which is why my boycott this year is only until AP comes back.
"I don't care that the NFL turns a blind eye to years and years of data about the effects of head injuries on players, or that it stiffs its veterans with respect to retirement benefits, or that is habitually supports the criminal actions of its players so long as they can justify turning a profit, or that it bilks cities and fanbases out of millions of dollars by using public revenue to build stadiums for the billionaire owners, but when you suspend my favorite player because there's overwhelming evidence that he BEAT HIS FOUR YEAR OLD CHILD WITH A TREE BRANCH UNTIL OPEN WOUNDS AND GASHES APPEARED ON THE CHILD'S BODY, well that's the last straw. ALLY OUT!"
I still love the players and I think Zimmer is a great coach and I will be cheering them on from afar. I know it won't do any good to boycott the games but it makes me feel good to stand up for what I believe in even if nothing happens because of it.
"I believe in due process, even though I have no idea what that actually means."
I just wish more people would boycott the games and the sponsors because the NFL won't change their ways until they start losing support and money from the fans. /rant
I agree. It would be great if more people boycotted the NFL and their sponsors until the league started changing some of its prehistoric views on violence, women's rights, drug use, criminal behavior, head injuries, player safety, and...oh. Whoops. You want people to boycott the NFL until they STOP SUSPENDING PLAYERS WHO BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF THEIR FOUR YEAR OLD CHILDREN.
I am so pissed at the Vikings organization and the NFL.

I don't agree with @rorybbellows often, but in this case, I can only stand up and applaud. Thank you for taking the time to express my feelings on the subject so eloquently.

Remember that time Brett Favre was in field goal territory at the end of that NFC championship game, and all he had to do was basically take a knee, but instead threw a game-sealing interception? Yeah they really handed the Saints that game.

He The kid doesn't deserve to have his career ruined to suffer just because the media this asshole thinks they doesnt know how to raise his kids without being a bitch and putting his hands on them.
