Are the people who say Watt shouldn't be in the MVP conversation because the Texans didn't make the playoffs way off base or is it just me?
Rodgers fan here, but I wouldn't be sad if Watt won. Honestly, I think the MVP award is kind of pointless but it's clear JJ Watt is a terrifying player who influences any game he's in.
I'd say they're neck and neck (and Tony Romo deserves mention but having Murray on his team hurts his chances).
But Rodgers is the reason his team is a #2 seed and probably the reason they're in the playoffs at all. His impact on the Packers can't be overstated. So...shrug. Rodgers and Watt are both good picks.

I think it's Rodgers as an easy MVP choice. He has the Pack playing as an elite team and I don't think that would be the case except with maybe two or three other QB's leading that offense. Houston was in contention for a playoff spot all the way up until the final week of the season and that likely would not have been the case without Watt. I'm happy with him getting the defensive player of the year honor. In my dreams the Cowboys starting five o-linemen share the MVP award.

I'm not saying Watt should win, but I have repeatedly seen the argument that he shouldn't even be in the discussion at all because the Texans aren't in the playoffs. That just seems like shitty reasoning to me.

This is the NFL, where the fans and media display insanely shitty reasoning on a regular basis.

The fact that the Cowboys decided to have a more balanced offense shouldn't hurt Romo's chances. He put up 34 TDs to 9 Ints, better stats than the following year all with a broken back. Nothing against Rodgers I just don't see how Romo isn't getting more consideration.

Probably has something to do with the fact that Romo is playing with arguably the most productive running back in the NFL this year, along with the league's most imposing offensive line.
As a Bengal fan, I have hope this is the year we get the monkey off our back and win a playoff game. I see some positives. Excluding playing Pittsburgh, we have won 7 of our last 8 (including wins against Denver and Baltimore). It's also a decent matchup. The Colts are one dimensional with Luck, and we have a solid secondary. They also have a soft run D, and ever since we increased Hill's workload our run game has been clicking.
As far as the big picture...I be surprised if the NFC championship game is not Packers/Seahawks. I've been a little higher on the Cowboys than most this season, but going into Lambeau (assuming they beat the Lions) against Rodgers is a daunting task. As far as the AFC, I think that Pittsburgh/Indy/Cincy could take down Denver. Week 11-16 Peyton's stats were very average. Last year when they won the 2 AFC playoff games to get to the Superbowl, Peyton played good against the Chargers and great against New England. If he is not playing at a high level then they can be knocked off. As far as somebody beating New England in the AFC...maybe Pittsburgh if Bell is healthy.
I think if you was going to bet on somebody to the win the Superbowl, Pittsburgh brings the best odds.

Fair enough. So should I be blaming Drew Brees for not restructuring his contract that he is no longer earning, or do I need to direct my frustration towards Mickey Loomis for not attempting to do something similar with Brees' contract?
P.S. You're welcome for me proving your point so swiftly

I dont know if that increased run production for Hill can be enough to offset the horrible playoff play of the Red Rocket. I wouldn't mind seeing them beat Indi but they don't stand a chance against the Pats. The Cowboys are 8-0 on the road with the best offense going into the playoffs. Im not saying im not worried, but i can see them winning in a shoot out. Especially if its freezing at Lambeau field, where itll favor the team best equipped to run at will.

Honestly, you should shut the fuck up and thank God that you had the privilege of watching one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game more or less singlehandedly drag that moribund franchise to a Super Bowl.

I agree. Hoping Baltimore wins Saturday night so the winner of Cincy/Indy gets to go to Denver...plus I just can't stand Pittsburgh.
I'm excited for the probable GB/Dallas game...would be a good one.

I'll be in Pittsburgh on Saturday just like I was two nights ago for the Bengals thrashing. Go Steelers!

Down by 3 with four mins to go in FG range and Green had a crucial fumble...don't think you can consider that a "thrashing".
Enjoy the game! Been to two NFL playoff games, one of which was actually Ravens/Steelers AFC championship in Pittsburgh (one of my best friends is a Ravens fan and had a extra ticket)...was a crazy environment.

Yeah, I was semi-kidding and that end was a little unsettling. But the game just felt like it was the Steelers to win throughout.
Thanks! I'm pretty excited (first NFL playoff game). Jealous you were at that game...hoping for an exciting one (hard to not be under the lights).

There is a difference in appreciating a Super Bowl from five seasons ago and understanding when someone is washed uppast their prime and killing your cap space.

Brees lead the league in passing yards, posted a rating of 97.0(6th overall) and was second in the league in completion percentage. Please explain how he's "washed up" or "past his prime." He's still one of the best QBs in the league, it's the Saints defense that's the problem.

17 interceptions (tied for 3rd most) and three fumbles for a total of twenty turnovers. That puts him only behind Jay Cutler at 24 and Andrew Luck at 22. At least Andrew Luck had 43 touchdowns this year. The Saints -13 turnover ratio (31st in the league and only ahead of Oakland), which is admittedly also due to only 17 defensive takeaways all year, was the biggest single statistic for why the season went as it did. The Saints led the league in yardage (mostly garbage time yardage which inflates Brees' yardage total) at 6582 yards, yet were 9th in points scored because they turned the ball over so much. They were 31st in yards allowed at 6144 yards.
So, yes, the defense was a major problem for the team. But I don't consider a quarterback elite or worthy of a $26.4 million cap hit when he turns the ball over so much.

A big reason why he had so many turnovers is his lame OL and being forced to play from behind. What makes him such an amazing QB (as opposed to a guy like Eli) is that despite those obstacles he can still produce massive numbers. A lesser QB would simply fold (again, see Eli from 2013).

I agree that he is better than Eli and I agree that the OL sucks. I believe a restructuring of his contract could go a long way towards improving the defense and/or OL. Whichever can't be bought should be drafted.
Drew Brees' interception percentage this year was 2.6%. League average was 2.61%. He throws a shit ton so his totals are generally skewed.
If you use that logic, however, you also can negate his high total yardage, which is also below his average this year despite all the garbage time passing.
