[Day 4: 2013] Portugal. The Man

Portugal. The Man are awesome. There's a reason that Bonnaroo pimps this band so damn hard lately and that is because of the duo driving force behind the group, John Gourley and Zach Carothers. Primary songwriter and lead singer Gourley and bass guitarist Zach Carothers formed the band in Alaska after working on various music projects and before taking the outfit to Portland to record some music that would eventually lead to their debut album Waiter! You Vultures, which was released in 2006.

Each year following the debut album Gourley and Carothers would release a new full length album that would find the group experimenting with new sounds, instruments, and techniques. Recording and releasing so much in such a short amount of time loaded the band with a wide variety of tunes to choose from when playing live shows. The group isn't typically known as a "jam band" but the way they have been able to take a song and stretch it out and give it new life is something that would please any fan of improvisational music.

The band has gone through some lineup changes in the past year or so and taken 2012 off from releasing a new album. The exciting news, however, is the band has been in the studio working for their first time with producer Danger Mouse and the new album for 2013 will be released just in time for this year's Bonnaroo.






The band has a few songs they typically will play but they are known for varying a good amount of the set up and hit songs from early albums as well as new ones.
