Yeah our show in nola coming up has The Faceless and Royal Thunder opening. Haven't even checked out either yet. Animals as Leaders ruled live both times that I've seen them. Especially the time they headlined in small bar here. Saw Periphery open for Deftones last month. Over-hyped band sounded like shit live. I was already on the fence about them because their singer ruined the music for me that I had listened to for preview of show. People kept telling me how awesome they were so I went in early and checked them out. NOPE! them shits sucked.
I know I'll have mine on tomorrow. Despite knowing all about Jeff's medical issues, I was still really shocked by his death. RIP to a great. Kinda gotta wonder what this means for Slayer now.
It's not like the band was close to breaking up before he died, they'll probably just find someone else to play his role. I highly doubt Slayer would just stop now.
Well, I'm thinking - it's not that uncommon for bands to replace members if someone leaves or dies. Not as uncommon as you think. Sepultura went on even though both Igor and Max Calavera left. While not metal, Dave Matthews Band brought in a new sax player after LeRoi Moore died. Doesn't Journey have a new lead singer? Stuff like that.
Heard about Palms like over a year ago, but had no idea they finally released a single and were booking shows. The Sword is amazing live. Sunday will be my 4th time seeing them and my first time seeing Clutch.
Yeah, they only just say they are going to show up to things now and don't actually do it.
I've heard they don't have much money right now to afford all the trips across the country all the time, and primarily get finances from lawsuits against people beating the shit out of them or from municipalities that treat them like shit. Once people wised up to that, they stopped getting the lawsuit revenue they were looking for.
It's not the image/walk or whatever, it's mostly because I just don't "feel" their music. Does that make any sense? I will say that Deafheaven is way better than Liturgy though. But I just feel like both are representative of something like post rock than death metal. If I get a chance to see either live, I certainly will so that I can back up my feelings towards them even more. Maybe they'll change my mind live? I doubt it though.
This is just my opinion, Zapp. Think of me a weirdo and be done with it. I don't really care for Explosions in the Sky, but I love GYBE.
I think Hunter Hunt-Hendrix touched on a lot of really good points in his Transcendental Black Metal Manifesto about how the genre and expectations have changed and I don't think it does the genre any favors to be so exclusive.
Okay, in all seriousness, I got you and am reading the Manifesto. Although I don't know I agree that double nihilism equals affirmation, necessarily. Especially as it applies to the properties of Hyperboran Metal vs. Transcendental Metal.
What really turns me off about Deafheaven and Liturgy is definitely the vocals. I just feel like it doesn't belong with their music. If they got rid of their cheesed*ck singers and went into the direction of Isis/Pelican/Russian Circles, I would probably love them.
