Death Grips is that group that everyone thinks they have to praise to high heavens because everyone else is doing it. The music isn't bad by any means, but its far from deserving of the praise heaped upon it.

On a related note, I just started listening to them last week. Makes for pretty decent gym music.

That's what I've been saying about them too. I think people like the idea of them more than they actually like them.
I know I'll be in a very small minority with this, but I think the same think about Frank Ocean. I like that type of music, like him as a person, but that CD is not worthy of the praise. It's probably the best of that genre right now, but it is a small talent pool right now. JMO

The insane Frank Ocean love is beyond my understanding as well.
Mind you, it is not my kind of music to begin with, so I am biased.
Bassnectar did a reddit AMA a few days ago and someone asked him why he wasn't showing any love to the posters city (I forget which city) And his response was basically that it wasn't about not showing love to the city but that the tours are carefully planned and one of the reasons why they may not play in your area is because big festivals have a radius clause (and he did use Bonnaroo as an example along with Coach, & Lolla). He said chances are if we don't play near you in the spring its cause were playing a festival near you in the summer.
With that being said he's playing in Chattanooga on May 12th. Which to me makes him unlikely. Which kills me because his 2010 show looked pretty awesome on Youtube...

Wrong. Jessie Ware is the best of that genre right now (although her brand of R&B is quite different from Frank's). I totally agree that Frank Ocean is a great singer and a fascinating guy, but the collection of songs on Channel Orange is not worthy of the kind of praise that's been heaped on it. There are some great singles though, for sure.

He's going to either Hangout or Roo, that's for certain. I'm leaning towards Hangout, because they already did the PL/Nectar combo at Roo 2 years ago and based on your Chattanooga point, I think we'll be seeing him on the beach. I'll be at both fests though so I don't really care...I'd prefer him be at both. He's the one electronic act I can't get enough of...always puts on a phenomenal show.

Confused by the "wrong" because it sure seems like we agree on everything. I didn't mean there was no good r&b just it is not what it use to be. One or two plus FO is not deep.
Sorry, I wasn't clear. I was agreeing with you 90%, just disagreeing with your statement that Channel Orange is "probably the best of that genre right now."
Also, I would say that R&B has actually gained popularity in the last year or two.

Just wondering what the appeal is to their music? I've tried listening to them multiple times just can't enjoy it. Its just noise to me.

I like Death Grips because it gets me so freaking pumped up. When I listen I can feel their anger and all the passion they pour into their music. It's not often music elicits such a powerful reaction from me like that and it's fun to indulge (please don't interpret this as I am a music cynic because that's the farthest thing from the truth).
That said, I think a lot of the praise they receive comes from their public persona as much as it does the music. They are very good and I will definitely see them but they're not changing the face of music as we know it or anything.

This is exactly why I said it makes great music to work out to.

Could not agree with you more. I haul ass when I run to them.
