Good call on Damien Rice & Radiohead, EAP! Those are my go-to guys when I need a good soul-cleansing cry. For moments like those when your heart is tattered and bruised, you just can't go wrong w/those pensive English guys. They are so accustomed to gloomy weather that their music is so damn therapeutic for me.
My other audio therapists are: Peter Gabriel, Glen Hansard/The Frames, Jeff Buckley, Leonard Cohen, Elliott Smith, and - to a lesser extent - The Decemberists.
When you want to sulk, pour yourself some wine and listen to Damien Rice's "Cheers Darlin":
When you want to cry, listen to Peter Gabriel's album Us. It was written during his divorce; it's full of heartbreak that makes you feel better after one listen.
The song "I Love to Be Loved" has perfect breakup lyrics:
And in this moment, I need to be needed With this darkness all around me, I like to be liked In this emptiness and fear, I want to be wanted 'Cause I love to be loved
And in this moment, I need to be needed When my self-esteem is sinking, I like to be liked In this emptiness and fear, I want to be wanted 'Cause I love to be loved
Let it pass let it go let it leave From the deepest place I grieve
Though it takes all the strength in me And all the world can see I'm losing such a central part of me I can let go of it
The same goes for "Washing of the Water" - another great one for when you feel like you're drowning in a sea of emotions:
I feel like I'm sinking down Thought that I could get along But here in this water My feet won't touch the ground I need something to turn myself around
Letting go, it's so hard The way it's hurting now To get this love untied So tough to stay with thing 'Cause if I follow through I face what I denied I get those hooks out of me And I take out the hooks that I sunk deep in your side Kill that fear of emptiness, loneliness I hide
His song "I Grieve" is another gut-wrencher:
I grieve for you; you leave me it's so hard to move on; still loving what's gone
When you're ready to move onto the "I'm pissed at you for doing this to me" phase, fire up Glen Hansard/Swell Season. Dude knows a thing or two about heartache & this song really captures his emotional rage about being dumped:
If you like prog rock, try this one from Porcupine Tree:
She changes every time you look By summer it was all gone - now she's moved on She called you every other day So savour it it's all gone - now she's moved on
So for a while everything seemed new Did we connect? Or was it all just biding time for you?
OK, now when you're ready to put on your proverbial boxing gloves & you feel your fighting spirit returning, Fitz & the Tantrums will give you the boost you need. Their EP "Songs for a Breakup" is good stuff, but the full-length "Pickin' Up the Pieces" has plenty of great tunes that give the finger to whoever done you wrong.
Lyrics from the title track:
Felt like the stars fell down before us In a dream of you and me then a storm came outta nowhere Turned my peace to misery.
Oh, and in that same style, Mayer Hawthorne's "The Walk" also works:
So long, you did me wrong Yeah you can walk your long legs baby right out of my life
Sorry to hear you're having to endure this. It sucks, it's not easy, but it gets easier with time. Just take care of yourself and remember: you're not alone. Music is the perfect therapist. Hang in there!
He's like you made an über troll by taking the worst parts of me (the utter disregard for other people's opinions), Phi (cluttering up threads with memes and adding nothing to a discussion) and Jess (an apparent belief that everyone else is the problem and/or arrogance without self awareness).

I think Elwood Blues might have the right idea. I have been married for a long time and have been with the same womarn for 12 years, but if she were to ever die or leave me and I listened to some of the shiz that y'all are suggesting immediately afterwards, I would probably be blowing my gotdamn brains out with a shotgun. This duder needs to be cheered up. OMGIMO

when you're ahurtin'....
"I Don't Care (If Tomorrow Never Comes)" Written and recorded by Hank Williams (Sr.)
I don't care if tomorrow never comes This world holds nothin' for me I've been lonely night and day ever since you went away So I don't care if tomorrow never comes.
[Chorus] If tomorrow never comes and the sun don't ever shine It won't matter with me For when she went away, my world ended that day So I don't care if tomorrow never comes.
My lonely mind wanders back to days that used to be My broken heart cries out for you Oh, if I can't have you here, I can't go on my dear So I don't care if tomorrow never comes.
[Repeat Chorus]
once you feel better...
I Won't Be Home No More Written and recorded by Hank Williams (Sr.)
Well, you're just in time to be too late I tried to but I couldn't wait And now I 've got another date So I won't be home no more You're just in time to miss the boat So don't take off your hat and coat Be on your way, that's all she wrote 'Cause I won't be home no more.
1st Bridge
I stood around a month or two And waited for your call Now I 'm too busy pitchin' woo So come around next fall I scratched your name right off my slate And hung a sign on my front gate You're just in time to be too late And I won't be home no more.
Well, you're just in time to turn around And drive your buggy back to town You looked me up I turned you down And I won't be home no more You're just in time to change your tune Go tell your troubles to the moon And call around next May or June 'Cause I won't be home no more.
2nd Bridge
I used to be the patient kind Believed each alibi But that's all done, I 've changed my mind I 've got new fish to fry Well, you're just in time to celebrate The things you didn't calculate You're just in time to be too late And I won't be home no more.
Just saw this thread. Sorry to hear you were going through something like this recently, Jackson. If ever you need a friend to talk to, right now I have a pretty good perspective on this sorta stuff. Will elaborate if you wanna talk.

Hopefully she didn't, but if she went to Plan B before cutting you...
Bruce Springsteen Backstreets Lyrics One soft infested summer me and Terry became friends Trying in vain to breathe the fire we was born in Catching rides to the outskirts tying faith between our teeth Sleeping in that old abandoned beach house getting wasted in the heat And hiding on the backstreets, hiding on the backstreets With a love so hard and filled with defeat Running for our lives at night on them backstreets
Slow dancing in the dark on the beach at Stockton's Wing Where desperate lovers park we sat with the last of the Duke Street Kings Huddled in our cars waiting for the bells that ring In the deep heart of the night we cut loose from everything to go running on the backstreets, running on the backstreets Terry, we swore we'd live forever, takin' on them backstreets together. Endless juke joints and Valentino drag where dancers scraped the tears up off the streets dressed down in rags Running into the darkness, some hurt bad, some really dying At night sometimes it seemed you could hear the whole damn city crying Blame it on the lies that killed us Blame it on the truth that ran us down You can blame it all on me Terry It don't matter to me now When the breakdown hit at midnight There was nothing left to say but I hated him and I hated you when you went away
Laying here in the dark you're like an angel on my chest Just another tramp of hearts crying tears of faithlessness Remember all the movies, Terry, we'd go see Trying to learn how to walk like heroes we thought we had to be And after all this time to find we're just like all the rest Stranded in the park and forced to confess To hiding on the backstreets, hiding on the backstreets We swore forever friends on the backstreets until the end. Hiding on the backstreets, hiding on the backstreets
