After a first listen I'm not a huge fan of this one. I was reading up on it and apparently they wrote it in about 20 minutes with the full intent of making it sound like a cliched rock song, because their label thought "Hunger of the Pine" wasn't a strong or poppy enough lead single. It sucks that the band has to fold to pressure from the label and put out stuff like this...because this just isn't alt-J's style at all.
I meant to respond to this sooner, but I went down a rabbit hole of trying to find truth to the written in 20 minutes story. Long story short: I only found a COS article about it and then this morning the band posted something on facebook about the story not being true. So, for me, it will always remain a mystery.
I like the song, it's not as good as "Hunger of the Pine." I think it strays from their sound just enough. It's cool to see them break away from their norm a little. Even if it was because some record execs (allegedly) told them to.
Now, if they'll just release "Bloodflood 2" I will be a happy a girl. But my guess is I'll have to wait for the album to come out.
