I was thinking we could use this thread to help get recommendations from one another. If you're ever really into an artist, and want to know if there is more out there that you would probably really like given the fact that you like that artist, you can just ask here!
I'm looking for stuff like Iceage and Holograms. Post-punk that is more on the punk side and less on the post. I enjoy the original stuff but for whatever reason I connect more with the modern revivalist versions of those bands--perhaps it is the production quality or the thicker sounds of those bands.

I've been trying to find a band like Whitest Boy Alive for years but it's been difficult. Cut Copy and Metronomy seem like the closest matches but are not perfect. Anyone else have any recommendations?

Also, try bands on Skin Graft, like U.S. Maple, The Flying Luttenbachers... anything on Ipecac Records or Amphetamine Reptile like The Cows, Unsane, Tar, Killdozer & Brainiac. That should tide you over.

The interwebs sez:
Ugly Casanova Built To Spill Wolf Parade Spoon Neutral Milk Hotel Pinback Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Cursive Cold War Kids The Shins Bright Eyes The Flaming Lips Minus The Bear Of Montreal Broken Social Scene Tv On The Radio The Postal Service
I agree with early Built to Spill & Cursive. And you can't go wrong with Spoon.

I also agree with Built to Spill and I would agree with Neutral Milk Hotel.
Also, there are those that would disagree with me but I always hold the Pixies in my mind with the early MM stuff. Doolittle and Surfer Rosa in particular. God I loved the Pixies.
When I searched "Modest Mouse" it shows just that band; click "expand" and it gives you the most similar artists first. The more you expand, the more results (no necessarily similar, but in the same vein usually) you get. So it's no surprise to see Built to Spill, Pavement, Galaxie500, and Hüsker Dü as related artists, even though Dean Wareham and Bob Mould sound NOTHING like Isaac Brock.
Still, I've discovered some cool bands this way. It's an audio rabbit hole.

I was looking for a thread exactly like this. I am really digging Alabama Shakes, especially the harder bluesy songs (Mama, heavy Chevy, itch, be mine) I'm looking for newer bands with their style.. any suggestions?

Well it's hard to be newer that Alabama Shakes, but give Gary Clark a try, or Delta Spirit or Dr. Dog.
